Honestly, this is the most bizarre news story I've read in a while.
But I don't like the whole quota concept and similar things anyway no matter whom it's applied to. I'm not one of many interchangeable human items in a huge box, but an individual. At college and at work, I want to be appreciated for my achievements and maybe for my personality and not for being a member of group ... (fill out the blank with whatever you want). Then again, I'd probably use the quota bonus if I could as I'm selfish.
I think it's cool if they give transgendered students the opportunity to fill out a box if in consequence, they will be addressed as the gender they feel like in mails from college etc. No harm caused, only positive effects.
But a gay (or trans) quota or easier admission to colleges for gays? WTF? Do they really want to create a new phenomenon of "closet straights/cis" who fill out that they are gay or trans just because they want to be admitted to colleges - and then will have to hide their true orientation or gender? (Well, maybe even I would do that if I were straight/cis in this case.) And what will they do with the bi students, will they have the same advantages the gays might get, or only half of it (no word about this in the article)? And wouldn't it p*ss off straight students if the others get an advantage, not for their achievements or to compensate for handicaps or hardships like long-term diseases, but because of their sexual orientation? And I always thought you go to college to learn, not to ->-bleeped-<-?
Plus, it would give me a stomach ache to out myself in an official document even if I were out and proud as a whatever it is in my private life. As long as it's not documented anywhere else. I mean, it's been a looooong time ago since we last had a dictator in the western part of Germany, but Eastern Germany Communism was only about 20 years ago and you could never know how the Committee might change their policies in these matters.
And imagine the political situation getting unstable and a party with a leader such as Hitler comes to power and they get their hands on the data... well on the other hand you could still say you're a "closet straight" and just lied to be admitted but they would make further investigations. Maybe Americans are more cool about this aspect as the USA are politically more stable than Europe where things can flip to the extremes in a very short time at certain places or even everywhere - with terrorists, right extremist parties rising, dictators and wars (Yugoslavia, Cold War, Northern Ireland conflict, Spanish ETA terrorism, various creepy right extremists in our parliaments etc.).
I mean, I live about 100 feet from a concentration camp memorial and I walk past it every other day. We actually had a KZ in this small town where I live but the camp is not there any more. No way I'd ever fill out these parts of such an admissions application.
