The Times confirms this judgment when it explains that "the proposed change ... is an outgrowth of the transgender community's push to recognize that some people may not have money to get a sex-change operation, while others may not feel the need to undergo the procedure and are simply defining themselves as members of the opposite sex."

So, in New York City, starting soon if this rule is adopted, all you'll have to do is define yourself as a member of the opposite sex and, according to the city's government, you'll be a member of the opposite sex. True, this isn't strictly all that's required. You'll have to change your name appropriately, e.g., from Al to Alice, or from Samantha to Sam. And you'll have to show that you've lived in your "adopted gender" for two years.

I read this article and knew it had to be challenged.  So I wrote a comment to the author.  Here it is:

As you have pointed out in your article, people have been persecuted by others for having a belief different from their own. Your example of Galileo is a good one but you forgot to mention he was persecuted not for getting science right but for saying something that flew in the face of what was religiously and socially acceptable at the time.  He crossed the line, and he paid for it.  There was a time in this country we used to burn helpless women at the stake because someone said they were witches, and this was socially acceptable. Just because something is socially acceptable doesn't make it right.  Through education we have become a better and more accepting society and I, for one, am grateful.

Your opinions about transgender persons expressed in this article are fear-mongering and sensationalistic.  Isn't who we are determined by our personality and not what's between our legs?  I have a daughter who is 5'2". She is considered short. Should she act short? Should she only do things short people can do?  I taught her to be all she can be and I'm proud to say she has done very well. She is who she is because of her personality, not her body.

Your analysis of the transgender person and calling her delusional is based in a lack of education supported by intolerance and fear.  Why did you feel the need to exaggerate your point of view to the extent of saying every person who comes into contact with a transgender person needs to fear a lawsuit or criminal prosecution?

The sky isn't falling Chicken Little.  We are just becoming a more accepting society and are recognizing we are all unique creatures of God who are deserving of love, understanding and acceptance.  What's so wrong with that?

I just couldn't let that go without saying something.  I guess I'm living up to my self description.

I'm sorry but unless an irreverable operation is performed to eliminate (for the most part) the birth sex hormone(s) then this is setting a dangerous precendent and I totally disagree with it! These surgeories are a fraction of the cost of Classical SRS and well within the reach of most TG's.

What about FTMs where the bottom surgery can run upwards of $100K and often times isn't successful?  Then there's those who don't have the education and don't even know what's available.  Not everyone has or knows how to use the Internet.  And, unfortunately, not everyone can read.  And there really are people who don't have two nickels to rub together after all the bills are paid.

As far as alternate surgeries, I'd venture it safe to say the average person will use the existence of a penis or vagina as proof of gender.  An orchiectomy alone won't convince them one is female.

Could you also explain "dangerous".  I didn't see anything dangerous about the city's proposal.  Maybe I missed something.

At the expense of drawing further ire then in a nutshell having someone who is presenting as female and running on testosterone really disturbs me and the same can be said for the other way around.

Sex/Gender Surgeory 101 ( sorry for the sarcasm NOT [well maybe a little] very tired of explaining this)

The orchiectomy: an operation where the testicles are surgically removed from a birthgendered male.
Effect: These are the primary organs producing 90 or More% of a males sex/gender hormone Testosterone.

The hystorectomy: an operation where the ovaries are surgically removed from a birthgendered female.
Effect: These are the primary organs producing 90 or More% of a females sex/gender hormone(s)
Estrogen/Progesterone.

End Sex/Gender 101 in a nutshell.

If ya wanna Talk the Talk and Walk the Walk then NO Natal Hormones for YOU! Gender change is all about DOING AWAY with BIRTH GENDER HORMONES produced by ones body. Its pretty simple when it comes down to it. Having people Presenting as their opposite gender and maintaining an identity to their birthgender just doesn't cut it ( pun intended ) with me.

I have NO idea as to why you have brought up F->M's bottom surgory  ???

Gender is far more than hormones.  MOF, there has been some really interesting research into testosterone lately and how it is just a minute part of the chemicals that can impact our moods.  Also other studies focus on the biosocial limitations and there is a tonne of work focusing on the psychosociological makeup of gender.

I am on the low end for testosterone levels in women and have a rather nice estrogen count, without having surgery.

You are entitled to your own opinion but I do not have to agree with it.  I am just really glad that you do not have any influence with what is going on in NY.
