Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh has praised Channel 4's Hollyoaks for tackling the issue of gender identity disorder.

The actress, who plays transsexual character Hayley Cropper, revealed that she was pleased when she first heard what the teen soap's producers had in store for new arrival Jasmine Costello.
