While the subject matter of her first book -- hermaphroditism -- is remarkably unusual, Kathleen Winter uses it to develop a compelling novel about love and loss and how human beings react to difference.

The Montreal writer (formerly of St. John's, N.L.) sets Annabel in a small community in Labrador, and the author's description of the landscape is as arresting as the characters who inhabit it.
