I was extremely lucky and I just got a lab job for the year! I'm really excited about it.

And I seemed to get away with wearing masculine clothing and a tie to the interview, so... here's hoping they won't mind if I present how I want to.

I lost the job I had for 4 years in January. I have been applying in a lot of places and putting my resume out there with no luck. The company I worked for went bankrupt and didn't pay me for working there the last 2 weeks. The money they owe me (aka the money I'll never see) would really be nice now...I've got a credit card and a medical bill that need to be paid off soon.

I was very fortunate and landed an IT contract right after the bottom fell out of the economy (and after not getting paid for 3 months). Since I can see the shape that the economy is in i'm working very hard at staying at this company, and so far i've been able to turn a 6 month contract into two years of work (and maybe more).

Before that (during the 3 month no-pay period) I had my resume out on the various on-line resume places, and got absolutely no interest. It was eye opening. I am in a somewhat specialized IT job, with 20+ years of experience, but still the lack of any offers was very concerning.

I have considered whats going to happen after the contract runs out, and I feel that at 47 i'm probably going to have to reinvent myself. Which i've done before.

My wife and i have discussed the possible options, and we've prepared ourselves for the worst - which may include moving anywhere that a job takes us, and possible lifestyle changes.

What kind of things do you people do ?
For example, if you were to make some handcrafts, I could sell them both online and offline. It shouldn't take much. But I can't help much with materials. I can tell you what I know of making them.

Also, programming tasks seem to be kind of popular lately, like say you're given a list of things to code, and then you send them. If they're good and work as they should, then you get paid.

These things are things I've done and they seem to work.

What kind of things do you think you can do which don't require a standard employer ?

After the economy kicked my ass I reinvented myself and move to the caribbean. I got a job managing a property with a 1 year contract. I reupped for 2 years now I am about to begin the process of trying to get a 5 year deal. i don't need a lot more money but I would like to get some security and more time off.
I apply or am recruited every time a similar job is available and usually get chosen but when the salary negotiations begin I realize  I have a good gig and decide to stay. I can see my value for the next year or so as I am finishing a major project but then when the hard work is done I can see them hiring a rookie to replace me. We'll see. I just have to keep on time and on budget and I think I'll be OK.  I hope.

I finally have a job again after 3 months of mostly being unemployed.  I taught some horseback riding lessons and had a couple under the table catering jobs, but nothing regular that I can rely on.  I'm going back to work in a call center for a catalog company, and hopefully it will last through february.  sitting in a cubicle on the phone all day mostly sucks, but I can't afford to turn it down.  The Occupational therapist I have done  some administrative work for also has some work for me in the next couple weeks too.

If things continue going well, I should be able to buy a car  by thanksgiving.  Or move out of my moms house, but I think I want a car more.

I just found out that there is a state program that helps people with all kinds of disability, including social anxiety, to find jobs that fit them. I have an appointment in 3 months. I'm looking for work on my own but these people may have an inside track to finding a job that fits me.

i work in WM as well. my store has only hired part time, over night stockers, and cashier workers exclusively. no floor or regular hour full time hiring. many i have talked to including myself are concerned day-by-day that they will cut our jobs and or reduce hours down too much.

I've been very lucky as I have had good employment for the last 5 years and have got some really good bonuses as well. Last year was tough for the company so the bonus was just "keeping your job." My job takes me to all kinds of crazy places as a project manager. It can be hard not seing my daughters when I have to work 3 months straight without a day off but you have do what you have to do.

I'n addition to 45 hours a week and another 13 hours in the car, I started a side business from a hobby that I can do at my little shop at home.  I make custom writing pens that retail for over $250 each (I only get a fraction of that) and up. There are only a handfull of people in the world that do what I do as far as the exotic materials that I use so it makes them VERY unique. 

I have been looking into buying and learning Google Sketch UP Pro which is a 3D design software that lets you do models in Google Earth.  You could charge thousands of dollars for modelling a project for someone. It's a great sales tool when you are trying to sell multi million dollar projects like I do.

You just have to find a niche and get good at it then sell yourself. It also helps to approach job hunting as a JOB. Get up at 6am and get readyfor the day.  Most of my friends that have been unemployed in the last year spend farto much time sleeping in and screwing off.  You may also have to do something you don't really want to do or move where you don't want to live...

I have been trying to find a job for the last two years, and outside of a temporary job gotten for me by a family friend that I had for a little over a month, I haven't even so much as received a call back from a single person. And to make matters worse, I have zero job experience.

I have been employed full time for about 3 months now, since mid-august. I feel really lucky, as I had been unemployed for about 2 years before this job. plus its great hours (for me) as I can sleep in until noon and go to work in the afternoon, then drive home around midnight when there is no traffic.

I've been looking for work for three years now and so far no luck. It certainly feels like there is no jobs out there, and it bites because I seriously need a job. But no since is giving up because sooner or later I should have some luck.
