So I'm applying to a number of colleges soon and I was thinking about it, what do I write for my name and gender? Most colleges have a place for an alternate name, so I would write Aubrey there, but I don't know what I would do about my gender. Anyone have an answer?

if you want anything from the .gov (loans, grants) then they (college or university) need your legal name and gender.

Most likely, any college will run your name and social security number and if your name and gender don't match your social security, they will notify you and most likely, you will have to re-apply for the college in your real name and gender.

You could always mark M (or F...I think you may have meant to post in mtf?) if you want to. I don't see a real problem with that. But again...I'm stubborn. I'm now legally male but before I was, I still marked M or left it blank. I never had an issue, but it wasn't for college purposes.

Yea you're going to want to fill all that out legally [as opposed to correctly]
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Thanks! That cleared things up a lot.
And zombie- I meant ftm. The name Aubrey is unisex. Wow... that came off rude, sorry. It wasn't intended to be rude.

Unless, your applying to a religious or conservative college -- I would make a note on the application that you are transgender.  It actually can help you get admitted to your college of your choice -- diversity is a plus in an application.  Plus a lot of universities are very accommodating to trans folks.  I know my son was given a single room and another one of his friends who attends a different university was given the same accommodation.  They were put on a floor of their affirmed gender.

Having not ever attended a college that required an actual application I am curious, is it a required thing at all or can you leave it blank like on job applications?

I love that admitting that makes me sound so pathetic, lol. It's really just about the fact that I've been in community college's as opposed to actual universities. Obviously my high school did a great job of making sure we were prepared for college... considering I've never even seen an actual college application. Stupid school.

Yeah, as far as I know all colleges ask for your gender. One of them had a blank line, so I was wondering if I should write FTM Transgender? Haha... I have no idea.

I know the university I attend has a couple of optional essay questions, one of them being something to the effect of "how can you contribute to a diverse environment?". But first you may want to look at the non-discrimination clause. It should be on the bottom of the application, to make sure it covers gender identity.
