DADT Repeal Fails in Senate
By Kerry Eleveld
http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2010/09/21/DADT_Repeal_Fails_in_Senate/The tone was set for a devastating rejection of an effort to end the 17-year-old policy that bans gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military as soon as GOP senator Olympia Snowe sent out an ominous statement Monday afternoon.
By Tuesday afternoon, repeal advocates lost Sen. Susan Collins, who said she would join a GOP filibuster unless Senate majority leader Harry Reid agreed to open the debate. The loss of Collins was the Democrats' last best chance for beating a GOP filibuster that would prevent the Senate from moving forward with debate on the National Defense Authorization Act, to which the "don't ask, don't tell" repeal measure was attached.

John McCain For The Win: The Democrats' DADT Repeal Fails (Gay Servicemembers)
http://www.queerty.com/john-mccain-for-the-win-will-the-democrats-lame-dadt-repeal-fail-gay-servicemembers-today-20100921/ It's looking like Sen. John McCain will get his way. With a cloture vote coming today to end debate on 2011's Department of Defense Authorization bill (and nix any possibility of Republican amendments), Maine's Republican Sen. Susan Collins says she's not going to vote for it, meaning the Democrats will be (at least) one vote short of pushing it through. UPDATE: In a roll call vote of 56-43, the Senate failed to score a 60-vote majority to block John McCain's attempt to filibuster, meaning there is no cloture, and no immediate end to debate on the budget bill or DADT's compromised repeal. Sen. Snowe voted against cloture.
