Crossdressing/Transgendered???

I was born a female. I'm not transgendered or anything but my cousin is a crossdresser and is deciding whether to change his sex or not. Me and him are very close and he asked me to learn more about how he is so I will understand better. I would like to know why do crossdressers just dress up like the opposite sex but never actually go all the way. Is there a reason for that? I have always been confused about that.

Generally a cross dresser is a person who likes to dress and present themselves as the opposite sex.  Usually it has nothing to do with a sexual fetish or sexual release.  It is because they simple enjoy doing it.  And women can be cross dressers too, but society just looks the other way when they do it.

Transgendered covers a lot of different gender variant, included but not limited to cross dressers, the Intersexed, gender queer and the Transsexual.

A transsexual has a deep desire to alter their bodies to conform with their brain gender.  To this through Hormones, Dress and /or Surgeries.  Brain gender is that with ones see ones self.  Birth gender is the physical sex.  A Male to Female has a Birth gender that is male, but a brain gender that is female.  Female to male has a birth gender of female, but a brain gender of male.  Both will do what they can to change the body it that of the brain gender.

I have been a lifelong crossdresser.  I am in my 60's and have no plans to transition.  I do not really know all the deep psychological reasons why I crossdress, and I do not care to add to the many speculative theories about the underlying causes of crossdressing, but I can simply say that I enjoy it.  I consider myself to be androgynous--I am physiologicaly male but I have both masculine and feminine personality traits.  When I do not crossdress for a long period of time I feel uncomfortable and constrained.  When I put on a skirt and makeup I feel a freedom to give expression to a part of me that has been suppressed.

I disagree on some of the opinion made by Janet, Maybe on some cd they want to show themselves as the opposite sex, but not "in general"
The CD is the one person that at least uses one or more cothing shoes accesories made for women or identified that only women in the society can use but not men, and viceversa, also women that uses men stuff only for men (actually most of men clothing has a version for ladies now) but for instance briefs, or mens shoes, or simply to look like a man, thats is simple crosdressing, other women goes directly to transition before crossdressing, when they are really looking for the complete identification of being a man and being threated by passing as one.

In men for instance i guy who loves to put on hose and feel the softness of the silk in his legss is a crossdressing habit, he is not trying to be identified as the oposite sex, evene if he is wearing all the stuff, heels, wig, makeup dress, and go out and about, he is still the same guy maybe he would like to explore himself and venture the world as a woman, maybe he will like to play a game to be a woman for one day, but at the end he is the same guy and lives his life as a man. once the guy decides he is the girls he had been developing when cd, and he feels to have the other identity, he is entitled to be something more than a cd or tv, maybe trangendered.

So the point is if your friend is only using wearing stuff is complteley normal and fun, but when he is transitioning, then is a decision of life, which is very personal.

One way to look at it is transgendered people come in a range. Anyone that desires a behavior that is "across gender" is really transgendered in some way. That is what I think anyway.

Now people can do this in a number of ways and they can be independent of each other. for example, this could involve you identity, the way you act, the way you dress, the way you desire to be treated by society, and your desired physical body. Of course you sexuality is independent of this too.

So in my case I am a transexual woman, in that I identify as woman. I also desire to dress, and be seen by society and have the body of a woman. I'm also a lesbian woman. Some people desire to 'cross dress', some people desire to cross dress and be seen as women. Some men act very fem but are straight as arrows. It is not that uncommon say to get a ftm transexual that are very fem gay boys, or a transexual woman who is a tom girl, or a butch lesbian etc. You also get butch straight women..

So it is just one big melting pot. why it is I have no idea.

But many of us transexuals start out thinking we are cross-dressers, or lesbians or gay, but as we express ourselves we find there is more depth to it. Your friend might be at the point discovering that there is more to it than cross dressing. Funny I thought I was a gay man at one point, but now I know I am a gay woman. lol

To my mind and reading, Gender Identification is the key. Some very masculine guys like to CD, often in very subservient costumes, french maids, babies, flouncy clothes. Fine. It does nothing for me. I want to present as  me. Yes I totally enjoy my clothes, shoes bags, make up, perfume,  and most of all being  ME. But that is what is about, being me. I have no problem with (for suggestion) a male who wants to wear a 'Maids Dress" and masturbate. I have to admit I have no idea why this should be a turn on for anyone, but it is not my right to criticise. I think these people, and please I am not trying to be insulting in anyway, are TV/CD. Go for it and enjoy.

I couldn't think of anything worse.

Personally, I never truly cross-dressed.  Of course, I do now, but I'm a diagnosed transsexual on hormone replacement therapy about to go full-time (The book will explain all of this very well.).  I accessorized:  Bracelets, anklets, toe rings, women's perfume, etc.  For 2-3 years in guy mode, before starting hormones, I wore women's shorts (short ones), androgynous tops, occasional anklets.  Fortunately, I had the build to do this. 

My point is there is wide variation.  Helen Boyd's book will help him (and you) really understand these things.  It's a great resource.  I highly recommend it.  Her husband start out just you describe above.  Check it out.  Think you'll be glad you did.  Good luck to both of you.

I've cross-dressed since I was 7.  As I got older I found I needed to do it more and more and that just putting on the clothes was less and less satisfying.  Finally I realized that I needed to be a woman full-time.  Now I am one and, for the first time in my life, I am comfortable with who I am.

Some of these definitions are a little fuzzy because everyone is different.  Often we aren't one or the other but a little of both and neither.  The best explanation of transsexualism that I've found (and I've read a lot of them) is the book "True Selves."
