Found this video of a CBC discussion on transgendered teachers.
Apologies if it's been posted elswhere.
What is interesting are the tactics employed by the speaker from the traditional values group.
She focuses on transgender as a mental illness, which she then describes as a serious mental illness. Later, she makes reference to the so called bathroom issue. but harps back to the serious mental illness theme.
Watch her performance. It seems polished and rehursed. She has clearly memorised lines, but delivers these in a manner that suggests she has been coached by professional actors. her intonation is very effective.
I was a little annoyed when she was interupting, but then realised that this was also done very well. She had already laid her ground work, so her interuptions suggested, almost necessity.
Her appearance is also very effective. Looking like a fun sort, a mom, a wife, even a teacher. Never does she condecend to the transgender speaker.
Compare that to the performance of the transgender speaker. She is continually on the defensive. She has clearly been upstaged by the mental illness claims and hardly makes any real defense.
Could the transgender community learn something here?
