Santiago left their Manhattan home and ended up in a shelter for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, or LGBT, youths.
Santiago, now 20, is part of an 'epidemic' of homelessness among LGBT youth, according to a new report released on December 14 by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Coalition for the Homeless.
