The Way I Write ?

About a year ago, when I told someone I knew online my body wasn't that of a girl, he didn't quite believe me at first. I was kind of happy, but mainly confused. I asked why, and he told me I "wrote like a girl" and that nothing could have made him believe otherwise. I was kinda happy, but now that I think about it and am paranoid about passing, I thought I'd ask.

What is a "feminine" way to write, excluding handwriting ?

And what do you think of mine ? Is it definitely masculine, definitely feminine ? Androgynous ? Or do you think this can't be identified to gender at all ?

Wouldn't give it a second thought to be honest. He probably needed to think of something to say.

There are some theoris about males and females wirting differently. When I check my texts, they vary depending upon what I'm saying and where I've posted it.

But, as I suggested, i doubt that's what he's thinking about. He's just looking for something which he thinks is friendly and reassuring to say.

Well, that's what I thought at first, but it has happened to me once more afterwards, and they both said they "usually clocked travelos" [what we call people who play online games as the opposite gender in French] and they didn't feel that about me at all. That's why I thought I should ask.

Anyway, one character, who also programs the site, invited me into this new room he'd created. Then he starts chatting me up. Then he demonstrates a new graphical routine and gives me a big kiss.

I honestly didn't know what to do.

I have absolutely no idea what the difference is... but I have definitely observed that my mind over time picks up a gender from plain text.

It takes quite a while for me to pick it up though, in your post it could be either, I wouldn't hazard a guess.

I wouldn't worry about it though. It's subtle and extremely low on the list of things people will mentally take into account. It's more representative of your personality than anything else.

I would say it's probably largely that guys restrain what they say more. Women are less reluctant to talk about emotions. But yea, it's all very vague.

Hmm, the gender genie thing, I'd already seen it, but as I'm French and I've lost all my school work a year ago (hard disk flunked), I don't have many texts in English that "fit" in what the program considers a good text.

Seems it thinks half my writings are male and the other half female....
Go figure eh?

My wife and I play online games and it's interesting because people often assume I'm a girl, and sometimes they think she's a guy.

Generally I have noticed little things like girls tend to type out things like "Okay" instead of saying just "k", or "ok". Also, generally I'd say I've noticed that girls punctuate and spell better. But this rule is broken all the time. As a test, just go onto one of those random chat services like www.omegle.com or something and then see if you can tell a difference between boys and girls. I really can't and neither can the people on the other end most times.

So I dunno. I suppose it's a toss up.

The Gender Genie will vary enormously with the type and the context of writing. It is fun but no real indicator of gender. I have tried it with famous female and male writers and get different gender results depending on the novel and/or passage.

Writing styles between men and women are only really noticeable in informal letters and notes such as person to person writing or blogs. The view of the writer will be an indicator of the gender.

Handwriting is more gender specific. Girls tend to be neater and more uniform in letter formation. Boys go for speed rather than neatness. Guessing a persons gender from handwriting is usually more accurate, but not certain.

My writing feels very gender neutral, excessively formal, and generally gender-free. It usually sounds like I'm writing an academic paper, and it doesn't help that I use so many formal words and wordings. I don't try to write the way I do; that ->-bleeped-<- just flows naturally from the tip of my pen or the tips of my fingers.

My writing reflects the thoughts I am having at that given moment, and sometimes it flows like wine but other times it's just choppy. I can't really determine what my style is.

It's just me.
