DEFENCE force chiefs have agreed to pay for the sex-change operation of a soldier who wants to return to her old job training Diggers in extreme sports after her surgery.

Army Captain Matthew Clinch, who served twice in East Timor, will become Bridget Clinch after gender reassignment-realignment surgery, funded by taxpayers.

Victorian RSL president Maj-Gen David McLachlan said he was surprised the Army was picking up the tab.

ARMY Captain Matthew Clinch served twice in East Timor and after his final sexual transformation to become Bridget Clinch wants to return to his previous command role.

After months of  uncertainty, the army has confirmed that taxpayers will pick up the full tab for Capt Clinch's gender surgery and any other treatment that is required by her.

Capt Clinch is with her partner and two daughters, on extended sick leave from her job as the second in command of the army's Adventurous Training Wing based at Wagga Wagga in southern NSW.

Is just me, or am I sensitive, but I hate that term ''gender bender'' I think its distasteful, offensive and down right insulting, Ian McPhedran defence writer from the Daily Mail should have a better choice of words, I remember many years ago a magazine piece on me refered to me as gender bender I was deeply offended at the time, Im not gender bender or a ->-bleeped-<- ether, proper term transgender or simplely a woman, Im a woman and proud of it, sorry for the rant......
