Boys Don't Cry
Drama, Serious
Quote from: NetflixWhen Teena Brandon (Hilary Swank) moves to a small Nebraska town in search of a new life, she takes the name Brandon Teena, passes herself off as a boy, begins dating a beautiful girl (Chloe Sevigny) and makes friends among the town's redneck men ... until the truth is revealed. Swank's Oscar-winning portrayal of this real-life character illuminates one woman's voyage of self-discovery -- and the tragic events that cut it short.

XXY
Spanish, Drama, Serious
Quote from: NetflixInés Efron plays Alex, an intersexed 15-year-old, in this compelling tale. Though she's living as a girl, Alex and her family begin to wonder whether she's emotionally a boy when another teenager's sexual advances bring the issue to a head. As Alex faces a final decision regarding her gender, she meets both hostility and compassion. Director Lucía Puenzo's sensitive drama co-stars Valeria Bertuccelli, Martín Piroyansky and Ricardo Darín..

Better Than Chocolate
Steamy, Romantic, Witty
Quote from: NetflixScant hours before her uptight mother (Wendy Crewson) and brother move in with her, Maggie (Karyn Dwyer) meets the woman of her dreams (Christina Cox). Though Mom is oblivious to her daughter's sexual orientation, it's a tough thing to hide in close quarters. Meanwhile, Maggie's transgender friend (Peter Outerbridge) falls in love with the owner of the lesbian bookstore where Maggie works. Anne Wheeler directed this sexy romp about love and lust.

Headwig and the Angry Inch
Campy, Quirky, Witty
Quote from: NetflixAfter a botched sex-change operation, East German glam rocker Hansel (John Cameron Mitchell) becomes Hedwig and travels across the United States with a stage show, following her ex-boyfriend (and former band mate) and telling her life story. Hedwig's offbeat show slays audiences -- but in diners not clubs. Mitchell also wrote and directed the comedy, which won at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for several Independent Spirit Awards..

Why is there not more?
This is a list of movies that I have personally watched, or have been directly recommended to me.

Got more?
Make a recommendation in this thread. Any full length feature, with transgender characters is allowed.

The thread may be expanded to cover transgender actors as well, but that is currently not in my plans.
This thread is always being updated.

I made this thread because I was unable to find a list of good transgender movies, and I felt a consolidated thread covering the topic would be helpful for more people.

Would you guys like it if I said "MTF" or "FTM", describing which side the movie covers?

Sticky?

I love "Better Then Chocolate"!

It has my most favorite song, sung by Judy called "I'm Not a F*ing Drag Queen!"

It sums up my position precisely! And it is such a touching love story.  I feel for all the characters.  It is nice.

I have a recommendation.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Quote
A transexual punk rock girl from East Berlin tours the US with her rock band as she tells her life story and follows the ex-boyfriend/bandmate who stole her songs.

It's a really fun movie, and has the greatest line ever for referring to male genitalia.

:D  Yay!  I really love the movie--it was the first movie with a transgender person in that I ever saw and it was just really fun.

If anybody can find it, I warmly recommend Virdzina (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105761/). It's a Serbian movie so I assume it's pretty difficult to get on the internet, I watched it on a showing of our LGBT community. In that part of Europe, parents used to "camouflage" one of their daughters if they didn't have a boy to take over the property and these so-called "virdzinas" then continued to live as a boy for their whole life. It's a pretty cool movie!

I like this one because it was the first movie I ever saw that showed men
dressing as women and I especially like the two lines in the end of the movie.

"I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you,
I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So let's make the most of this beautiful day,
Since we're together, we might as well say,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?" - Fred Rogers

Different for Girls -Two (well manicured) Thumbs up!        http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116102/

Karl Foyle and Paul Prentice were best mates at school in the Seventies. But when they meet again in present-day London things are definitely not the same. Karl is now Kim, a transsexual, and she has no desire to stir up the past while she's busy forging a neat and orderly new life. Prentice, on the other hand, has charm but is a social disaster stuck in a dead-end job. His main talent is for getting them both into trouble. Amid the squabbles, they start to fall in love. One night, Kim invites Prentice to a romantic dinner at her flat. Prentice, finding the seduction unexpectedly effective, freaks out. He proceeds to make a public display of both of them and winds up in court. Humiliated and angry, Kim runs away. Only she can save Prentice now, but will true love triumph for a new made woman and an aging punk?

I saw Boys dont Cry a while ago and I thought that was really good. It was funny because I randomly picked a movie title that looked alright on demand and it ended up being about someone trans, so it made me happy.

I've been on a trans/interfilm binge this week - I've seen XXY, Hedwig, and yesterday The Crying Game. Today I'm going to watch what looks like a very silly film called Zerophilia, which is about people who change gender every time they have an orgasm. Light relief!

I don't think anyone has posted these yet. (sorry about the hyperlink, I don't know how to make the actual video show up here. :()
I watched 'Normal' with my mom because it focused on people more from her generation, so it helped her understand the trans-headspace better.

I watched a Spanish film called 20 Centimetres (or Centimeters if you're a Yank :)) about a transgender woman who's waiting to get her "20 cm" removed, and who is also narcoleptic (and dreams big musical numbers to replace the more painful moments in life). It's both funny and poignant, but it is unrealistic/fantasaic in its portrayal of Marieta, who is on HRT but whose 20cm is way too functional, if you get what I mean :).

Everyone should check out the Lisa Ling documentary on transgender individuals. It's called Our America with Lisa Ling: Transgender Lives. EXCELLENT!

Ew, Amanda The Movie, did you actually watch that? It was hideous. It was great up until the end when I wanted to throw up.

Check out "Red Without Blue" and "Wild Tigers I Have Known."
