Only 12 states in the USA have laws that protect LGBT people from discrimination in housing, and if you are transgender, the number goes down. The National Association of Realtors have decided to take some measures into their own hands. At their annual meeting in New Orleans, the organization approved an anti-discrimination measure, though the transgender community was once again left out.

Mara Keisling from the National Center for Transgender Equality expressed her concerns, but emphasizes that transgender people are actually already protected by the Fair Housing Act. "Its unfortunate Realtors didn't include gender identity. The policy just just means that the association has ill equipped its members to understand what the law is, because it's clear to us that the Fair Housing Act would protect against most cases of housing discrimination against transgender people—it clearly protects based on sex. Really the main effect of this is that they have ill-equipped their members of what the law is. Though, in the future we'd like to see [on amendments and policies] the inclusion of gender identity."
