There were players and coaches who wanted to string him up from the rafters of the old Winnipeg Arena. Some sports fans were ready to run him out of town.

Once, defenceman Jim Kyte, the toughest player on the Winnipeg Jets, accosted him in the press box, grabbed his cowboy hat and tossed it down to the ice.

If only they'd known they were dealing with a woman.

Bombers shocked to hear about writer's sex change

The first reaction was the same from all of them: "You're kidding, right?"

Then it was, "Wow. What a story."

But when three former Blue Bombers wrapped their heads around the fact former Winnipeg sports writer Pat Doyle has undergone a sex change and is now living as Patti Dawn Swansson, they showed a compassion that belied their rugged professions.

You know, what's most amazing is the comments, especially considering they're unmoderated. Really sweet, and people are trying really hard with  the pronouns.
