I've never really known what I wanted to do as a career. The only thing I would love to do, I doubt is possible. But, when my high school counselor was askin' me what I wanted to go to school for, it hit me. Nothing else would be more perfect.

So I will be attending college in Fall of 2008.  If all goes well, I will start off getting my Bachelor's in Psychology at a smaller, private university in Manhattan.  Then, I am going to transfer to NYU where I will finish up a PhD in Psychology and then, get a Bachelor's or minor in Gender and Sexual Studies. That's right. I am going to be a Gender Therapist.

The way I see it, there is only a handful of good gender therapists. I am going to be a GREAT one. Not one of those ones that ends up not helping you at all, but a good one.

Seems like the perfect career for me. Something that interests me and a great way to help people that I care about. What do you guys n gals think?

  I think it's a FANTASTIC idea  ;D

It was my goal at one time also...unfortunately it never worked out for me.  I suppose I lost my will when I found out there isn't a single college in this whole state who offers a phD in psychology, how sad.  Anyways....I say GO FOR IT!!!  We could certainly use more therapists who have more than an "outside looking in" knowledge base.

Brady,

This sounds like a wonderful idea!  Perhaps you might want to do your PhD thesis on the trans community...

I wish you every bit of luck and success possible!

I think it's an excellent way to start, and not to discourage you, be open as you go through your undergraduate program. You never know what opportunities will open to you, and as you go, look at your long term interests in life. While I agree good gender therapists are few and far between, many live/work in larger communities where there is sufficient number of clients, and many have an expanded practice into family and personal issues. They often describe their practice in these terms than gender therapy to ensure they can be an approved therapist under many health care plans, some of which exclude gender therapy or therapy related to transsexualism.

Anyway, go for it, and while you're doing that research and try to meet gender therapists to get a picture of the work and career. And you just might find new opportunites to help in ways not obvious now. Good luck.

ps. I started as an engineer, became an electronics technician, studied geography (BS and MS), became a hydrologist, and now am a photographer following my lifelong hobby. Life is for wandering around to discover what you like and do best, and hopefully the two coincide to bring sheer joy in being and working.

Great career choice. I think it's important to have gender therapists who truly understand what we're feeling and dealing with, and who better to do that than one of us! I've educated a few therapists about gender issues while on my dime (or more accurately, hundred bucks)  ::)

Zyth..
I know isn't it a shame when you go to a doctor or therapist for help and you end up educating them vs them helping you...
Aggghhhhhhh
Yet again the unfairness fo the whole thing...!
