Bülent Ersoy started her classical singing career pre-transition, only to find that her music and performances were banned in Turkey because they were considered "social deviance" by the right-wing military dictatorship. She fought to be allowed to sing, arguing that she was a woman, not a drag performer, but only succeeded after Turkey had returned to democracy. She found herself in legal trouble recently for making statements opposing Turkey's incursion into northern Iraq to fight the Kurds.
