So I was listening to Boats & Birds by Gregory and The Hawk, one of my favorite, albeit saddest, songs. After posting in the thread started by ZaidaZadkiel (
https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,90538.msg654378.html#msg654378), and listening to it about 20 times I started to think about why I love this song so much. It's a song about unrequited love... or is it?
In the song the singer repeats the idea that she will love unconditionally and with all her being, regardless of whether her lover returns those same feelings. In fact, she tells her lover that if he should choose to leave her she will let him go as long as he leaves the memories they shared for her. The first time I heard this song it literally brought tears to my eyes. Recently the song has gathered new meaning to me. As the SO of a TG person I support my SO and respect the decisions that he chooses to make. As the song says:
If you be my star, I'll be your sky/ You can hide underneath me and come out at night/ When I turn jet black and you show off your light/ I live to let you shine/ But you can sky rocket away from me/ And never come back if you find another galaxy far from here with more room to fly/ Just leave me your star dust to remember you by... .
If my SO and I come to the point where our paths are no longer the same and he needs to explore on his own I will have to respect that. I love him more than anything and would make that sacrifice in order for him to be happy. This made me think of all of the sacrifice that is necessary for any relationship to be successful. Whether you are the SO of a TG person, a TG person with an SO, or just a member who has been or is in a relationship, just how much are you willing to give to ensure your SO's happiness?
Here is the song that I am referencing:
