Mamalee

Hi Y'all,
I am Mamalee. I am 56 years young. I had SRS when I was not quite 16. That seems like a full lifetime ago. It was something that wasn't talked about much then.

I've been married now (to the same wonderful man) for almost 25 years.

I'm here to chat, help, give any advice I can, learn, listen and - well - be a friend.

Welcome to Susan's Mamalee.  I'm interested to hear what it was like transitioning at such a young age 40 years ago.

Welcome to Susan's Mamalee.

You are definitely fortunate to have been able to have SRS at such a young age, and it seems that you had very caring and loving parents.  I hope that you enjoy your stay with us and I look forward to your participation.

Thanks for the welcome.

Transitioning 40 years ago.

I was fortunate enough to be in a location close to a gender clinic (in San Mateo, Calif), where I was introduced to other people who were like us.  I was given the guide lines to make me eligible for enrolling in the clinic.
Back then, I'm sure they were much like today.
I had to live and work 24/7 for a year and be on a doctor's prescribed program and had to visit a psychologist for weeks before they would even consider me for the program.
As I said, I was fortunate. I was young, slender, and I was drop dead gorgeous at the time of entering the program - still am by the way.
After the doctors visited with me they visited with my mother.  I was allowed into the program.
I didn't have to wait the full year.
I was accepted for surgery within a few months.

Lots of paperwork, name change, driver's license, school records, etc.,

I never thought it would be so easy (back then), but it was.

My transition was easy. Surgery was a trip and my life has been unbelievable.

Even compared to the enlightened era that we live in today I would have to say the you indeed were very fortunate.  While my transition was also relatively painless as well you are no doubt aware of the trials and tribulations that many in your time and mine have had to suffer.  Welcome again.

yes Steph - I'm aware.

I have to be honest and say - because I was so fortunate and because I looked the way I did, and had understanding situations and parents, I was not aware for a very long time how fortunate I really was.

That's why I decided to join Susan's - in hopes I could help, or, maybe give back a part of what I've received.

Since I worked in the field of Cosmetology and since I've lived successfully in a long term relationship, heck I've made it this far, and because I want to help people, I joined this site in hopes someone would benefit from my experiences.

That's what brought me here.
