So my therapists bff/transman told me in California the court papers cost 300 ish bucks, to change your name. But you have to post it in the newspaper. I don't think I'd be able to afford it all with the way I'm working, and having to buy my own gas and hormones and I'm looking to start electrolysis. I COULD save up but I don't want it to slow everything down =/

So is their anyway I could possibly bypass that silly requirement?

You might see if you can get a Financial Waiver Affidavit.

In theory, being poor should not be a barrier to access to the legal system.

The Financial Waiver is what you need to find out about.  I am in the process of changing my name here in Arizona and it sounds like the costs are similar.  Now it will be up to a judge as to whether I will have to pay all, some or none of the actual costs for changing my name based on my financial situation.

Good luck and have a great day.   :)

Go to the clerk at your local courthouse and ask for the forms, it might cost a few dollars.

How do I get one of those?

I am not sure about California, but for Arizona I have found every form I have ever needed on-line.  It has taken a bit of searching, patience and luck, but after I found them, all it took was printing them out and getting them to the court.

Have a great day.

Yes, the CA forms are online. Divorce, name change, just about everything.

Just got the forms saved, gotta print them out. My biggest concern is getting the fees waived. If I can't get them waived it'll take me a month of so to save up the funds. I want to change my name ASAP, I'm full time and feel awful carrying a "fake id" lol. I also feel obliged to use my legal name also. =/

Waving fees is so that poor people, with no other access can have the law work for them, it's not a money saving device.

And, if you have a place to live, some food, a job and computer with internet access you don't qualify as poor in my world.

Well, I don't know if it will matter, but I'm living with my parents. :( They pay for the house, food, internet, and my car. I've payed for everything in my transition. I guess I'm ->-bleeped-<- out of luck though. I'll call and see about it anyways. =[

There is some sort of legal income threshold, you ether are above it, or below it.  Either way.

When I changed my name I bought a book at Barnes & Noble called "How To Change Your Name In California" by Lisa Sedano & Emily Dostow published by Nolo. Mine was the 2004 edition back then but they've updated it a few more times since. It was great. It told me all the forms I needed, where to get them, how to fill it out, how to arrange for publishing the "order to show cause for change of name" in a county circulated newspaper, what to do in the unlikely event the name change is contested, etc. etc. It wasn't hard at all. Basically I filled out all the forms and printed multiple copies, brought them to the court and paid the filing fee (which like it's been said you could possibly have waived, although it's a bit of a hassle), took the form they stamped with the court date on it and sent it to the cheapest newspaper I could find (in alameda county, CA it was the alameda times star) along with payment. They sent me the form that it'd been published for 4 weeks, I brought that to the court, the judge asked me some questions (are you a registered sex offender type stuff), signed the decree, and out I went to pay for some certified copies. That was it. The whole thing probably took around 6-7 weeks once I started.
