I was on yahoo answers when I came across this http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqztmeTVvXTw5hJOpl0pEWrk_Nw4;_ylv=3?qid=20110124162841AApqX4J

some of the answers are full of ignorance and hatred. Why do people choose to remain ignorant?

The question itself is fine...but the answers (at least one of them) pissed me off.

I echo not letting it get to you.

I kind of giggled/facepalmed because it was so "ignorant" (for lack of a better word--my mind blanket).

Sounds like my religous friends who equate what is between your legs is what you are.

This was in the LGBT section? Anyway. I may not have made a very insightful response but I made one anyway. This made me angry and I couldn't help but feed the trolls...

Sex is more than just biological and gender is more than just a social construct. I never liked clones.

In other news, Yahoo is still in business.  Who knew?  Why?

But lots of people, you included (no matter who is reading this) hold on to all sorts of fantasies, dreams, false - but desperately hoped for - beliefs.  They hold on to their ignorance too, hell, ignorance is bliss for the most part.  And at best, even the smartest people only have a few smatterings of education, like the Platte River, a mile wide and an inch deep.

And, for a lot of people, I think a lot of this is far more complex than people in here like to argue for one, and two, we have lots of really dumb people around who have not been given the training to really be able to wrap their mind around it.

FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

You gotta remember that Christianity enforces the gender binary. At an extreme level (those that read the bible literally) some go so far as to say that women can only have babies and obey men and they can not dress like men because that's a sin and only men can do work and be teachers and that sort of thing - that that's supposedly God's plan for the male and female. So yeah, it's really ingrained into the religion and if you step outside of that, most will think you're going against God and nature and you've made a pact with the devil.

JS and Rain are right:  most people on yahoo just be trollin'.  Bigtime.  But I will say that people tend to lighten up once they take a womens studies class where things like that are usually defined.  Multivariate analysis that I've seen in my Statistics lab from the GSS (General Social Survey) illustrates that people generally become more open minded with higher education.  Not always, true, but it is a general trend.  I do admit that it's difficult trying to explain these concepts to most others who are younger or older than college aged, but I will gladly repeat the same concepts thousands of times in hopes that it creates a better sense of understanding and peace.

Meh not all of Christianity does. A good portion of it was fine with me, until I was out. My actions haven't changed, my intentions are just know.. Looking and acting like a male was fine, until they were like oh your trnas! that's a sin!.. bahaha.

But then again there are lots of branches of christianity that ignore the gender binary as well.

Most of my christian friends come from the strong conservative christianity.. and well that's what I was raised in.. so I understand where they are coming from. I grew up thinking gays and trans were freaks that were going to rot in hell.

It's Yahoo Answers... that place is full of nonsense, poorly constructed thoughts, and stupid questions.
I mean, go to youtube and watch "how is babby formed" (the one with the cavemen), it's dialog is 100%, unaltered, question and answer from Yahoo Answers.

Yeah.  That was me, for the longest time.  I was such a dreamer.  So ignorant.  When I began to study science, I gained a much more pessimistic view of the universe.  But I became so much more effective at living life.

It's no wonder people are so screwed up.  If they knew the real truth about sex and gender, they would probably become depressed.  Sex is not the glorified thing that you see in the media, nor is it the complete evil that some religions portray it as.  It is just a thing.

The more I accept the reality of physics and science, the easier it is to see the ignorance in others.  I would rather have dull pragmatism than false hopes and ignorance.  I can only hope that the things I believe now are practical, and not just more ignorance piled on itself.

If you think physics will make you a pessimist, try history (the real stuff, not the Rah-Rah Gooooooooo Nationalism stuff that is taught through HS).  People tell me all the time I've very pessimistic, and then they turn around in the next breath and ask how I can be so happy and I tell them that being a pessimist means you are rarely disappointed and on occasion you're pleasantly surprised.  Optimists live exactly the opposite life.

Besides, the issue was never one of the glass being half empty or half full, either way, it's the wrong size glass.

I am on Yahoo Answers quite often and often check out the LGBT section. Yes, you will find alot of trolls and people who are very uneducated at Yahoo Answers.. The commenter at the bottom, "John Weather", is a gay man who is a misogynst and a transphobic person. He has created multitudes of accounts to spread his hatred, and apparently he is proud of it as well. He is very ignorant, and one of these people who tends to talk BIG, but knows little to nothing about anything. Honestly, anything he says should not even be acknowledged and should be considered far from the truth. Although, he's not the only transphobic LGB person I have encountered and or seen at Yahoo Answers..

But aside from that, you will find ignorance everywhere, whether it be Yahoo Answers or Real Life situations.
