The gentle drone of steel guitars and acoustic finger plucking is all Rae Spoon knew growing up in Calgary, so it seems inevitable that the androgynous singer would venture down that particular musical path.
Now almost 10 years since his first EP, Honking at Minivans, the soft-spoken Spoon is breaking away from his country roots with an album that delves into the beeps and buzzes of electronic music.
"I'm interested in the computer as an instrument, making drums out of certain waves," he says from his home in Montreal. "I made three country albums, so at some point you need to look for other influences or else you'll keep making the same album over again."
