There's a trans guy on youtube who's been on  T for like 5 years and it looks like he lost a lot of hair. I'm guessing it's from T? I'm worried that once I'm on T for a few years half my hair will be gone like his.  Is anyone else worried that they will go bald after being on T for while?

My hairs already mad thin pre t, so yes im nervous. But to me all the other changes will be more worth it than not going on t because I will probably go bald.

I want my hair line to recede.
Just got to weigh the pros and cons.

For me I think there are more cons than pros and hair loss isn't worth it for me. How would I get a hot girl being bald? That won't happen. Girls are gunna go for a guy with a full head of hair. I know it depends on whether or not the girl is shallow.  But being bald would totally bring my self esteem down and my self esteem is already all the way down.

There are plenty of transguys out there who still have a full/nearly full head of hair. It's different for everyone, but it's definitely not a sure thing that you'll go bald.

Once you're on T all of your physical changes will be based on your family's genetics, so are the men in your family balding? Brothers/father/uncles/grandparents?

Also depends on age and genetics. Just because you're young and start T doesn't mean all your hair is going to fall out. My dad is balding and so is my uncle and I've been on T for over a year with no change.

Look at your mom's dad, and when/if he went bald. Yes, the chances are higher for transmen to go bald and biomen, but there's always rogaine or whatever and all those products. Plus, you could just shave your head.

Balding is fairly treatable if you catch it in the early stages. The two most common treatments are minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia or Proscar). The latter is a DHT inhibitor and so it may reduce your body hair growth even as it prevents your head hair from falling out.

But you might not go bald anyhow. Personally I'm 2+ years on T and my hairline hasn't moved a centimeter.

You have the option of stopping T if you start to bald, and there are many permanent effects of T that will not reverse much if at all.
Trans men need to look at the men on both sides, not just their mother's. And there's no evidence that trans men are more likely to go bald.
My gender therapist told me to look at my mom's dad, I asked about my father and she said that wouldn't make a difference. And it seems, to me at least, that a lot of trans men *do* go bald, or at least have thinning hair. That's just what I've observed though.

Have no idea about my father, but my grampa is balding on the top. He still has hair, but not a whole lot. My uncle is not bald, but kinda balding on the front a bit.

Not sure when my grampa started losing his hair, but I hope it wasn't early in life.  I would never shave my head. I'm not a clean cut kinda guy. I like my hair long.

The guy on youtube, his hair was fine the first few years, but as the years went by his head was getting more bald. The front top is like balding, there's no hair.

If you're that worried about it, just use rogaine or something. Trust me, it's something I'm really worried about too. Most guys, trans or not, worry about it, I think.

You can even talk to a cosmetic surgeon. My doc who did my chest was told me 'when you get older, if you start to lose your hair you just come back to me and we'll fix you right up'
If you don't want to start T then fair enough, but if it's solely because of hair loss there is a lot of solutions to the problem. Just got to find the one that works best for you

Thanks guys. I'll find something to grow back my hair if it comes to that point.

If hair loss is gonna make T not worth it for you then I recon you should be reading up (if you haven't already) on all the other potential side effects including shortening your life span before you think of going down that path. Transitioning isn't an easy option, actually it's often a last option.

The men on both sides of your family will tell you what to expect, the reason they used to think it was just on the mothers side is because the gene they linked balding to was on the Y chromosome, they have now found there is another gene that has an impact so both sides of the family are relevant. If you have a brother that'd be the best person to look at but all other males in your family will give a hint, understand tho that nothing is guaranteed.

It's something I recon we all think about at some point but seriously, if hair loss is a deal breaker then there are other things here that you need to look at.

Does it really shorten your life span?  I wonder why.

It's well known that women live longer than men (I think by about 5 or so years). Possibly because men have higher risk of heart disease, heart attack, liver disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc. and so on that are the same risks of going on testosterone.
The story is the same, I've just personalized the name.

There's many reasons to get on T and many reasons not to. Hair loss is not my main concern, but it is a concern like many other concerns I have about getting on T.

I wish there was another way to deepen my voice and grow facial hair without T, but T is the only thing I know that will do that and give me a masculine look.

You know, I think its all down to lifestyle, too, since there are men [rarer than the norm, yes] that have lived WELL into their nineties, or even the hundreds. Its possible.  8)

Much research suggests that DHT (dehydrotestosterone) not testosterone contributes to hair loss and health problems.  Many men are sensitive to hair loss but a receding hairline is a very male thing.   My hair receded at about 1/2 an inch a decade which is very common for genetic males.  I found topical solutions did not grow hair back.  I did find that Avodart was very good at stopping hair loss but it grew very little back.

If you happen to enjoy the company of women they seem to not have a problem with men losing hair on their head.  Many women also seem to enjoy the feel of a man's stubble if you kiss them.  Women also seem to enjoy body hair on a man.

On a separate note good life style choices will improve your chances of a long life.
