Telling my boss?

So I'm trying to figure out how to tell my boss (I work at Brookstone) that I'm starting my full time year (real life experience) thing in a few months, and will be starting hormone treatment after that. Does anyone out there have any pointers to help with this process/conversation? any good resources that I can give him to help him understand? what to expect? Anything?

PS I cant loose this job because the insurance I get from it will be paying for all my hormone therapy, and SRS.

I think it all depends on your relationship with your boss, what sort of person they are, and what the company is like.  I won't name my company, but it's a very old brand, very proud, and prides itself on integrity, commitment, and diversity.  I had also asked in advance, anonymously (via the company Intranet anonymous Q/A page) whether a person transitioning in the workplace would be protected under the Company's anti-discrimination and harassment policy, and the answer was yes.  So I was pretty sure the Company wouldn't turf me out due to transition.  And I also have a really good boss, and a very good relationship with HER.  Even normally, she meets weekly with each of her direct reports for a one-on-one session, just to find out how we're doing and what we're working on.  So I scheduled an hour meeting instead of the normal half-hour, and said there was something I needed to discuss with her.  When the meeting started, I started off by saying "This isn't going to be the usual one-on-one session..." and I also hastened to assure her that I wasn't quitting, and nobody had died or was sick.  Then I just told her.  I had some material from the web ready to hand to her about definitions, and I lent her a copy of True Selves.  She was/is 100% supportive.

I think, though, a lot depends on who you're talking to.  It isn't all about timing and what to say/how to say it.

There is a Transition Package here That works really well.  Change as you may need to.

When I decided to come out I spoke to my immediate supervisor
and she then spoke with the office manager and office administrator for me.
I had a good relationship with my supervisor and felt I could confide in her
and that she would be understanding. Fortunately, the management team
and all the doctors (11) were understanding as well and had no problem with it.
Just be open and honest. I'm sure everything will be okay.

So I was talking to my boss today trying to get the nerv to tell him I'm TG, and somehow the subject of the district manager came up, he told me that she (district manager) was looking for a reason to fire me because she thinks I'm "to off the wall", "odd" and I should watch myself. So I thought adding I'm a the TG element was a bad idea, for now anyway. He said he has my back but she does not, Sigh... With this new information any advice? (other then looking for a new job im already doing that)

I would definitely contact HR. If you get all your ducks in a row with them you'll be in a much better place. Have you done well on recent performance reviews? Companies always have ways of getting rid of people but if you really plan things like this well it's less likely to happen. What kind of Non-Discrimination Policy do they have?

Check with your state.  Regardless what your district manager wants, the company operates within the state and is subject to its laws.  If you are protected under state law, she can want to fire you for anything, but being TS might not be one of them.

My advice is talk to your boss and HR now and gradually transition at work. This has a couple of benifits, it can make you feel less edgey and helps with the GD and also gives your work collegues time to deal with the change which again makes your life easier.
