Does anyone here, who is actively transitioning, work at Wal-Mart?  I have been unable to find their policy about trans people on The Wire and was needing help locating it.  In addition to that what is their stance on your bathroom usage, if you use the bathroom that is in correspondence to your new gender presentation (mtf using women's or ftm using men's)

I used to work at Walmart (Canada) from 2008-2010 with one of my FTM friends who still currently works there. I can see if there is a policy on there, he would know all about that. I found that Walmart handled trans situations very well and wasn't taken lightly. They never laughed or made a deal about getting my name tag changed. Although I didn't personally feel comfortable using the mens room I used the family washroom but I think my FTM friend uses the mens room now. It was one thing about management allowing me to and another to deal with co-workers.

I remember having to go and the family one was out of order and I told one of my co-workers and he said to use the mens and even came in with me in case other co-workers were there with something to say.
The story is the same, I've just personalized the name.

No family restroom in our store or I wouldn't be having all the problems I'm currently having.  :/

Hmmmm. Yeah I can see why that would be. Have you talked to any managers yet? How out are you at work and how far along are you with your transition?

I forgot to mention that I switched stores last year and worked there for about 4 months. There was an MTF who started transitioning and she used the womens washroom and got her name tag changed. A lot of co-workers were mean behind her back but got in sh** for it and some people who posted things on FB even got written up.

I feel like my transition was easier because my friend who worked there did it first so when I did it wasn't new and confusing to people. But management will be on your side it is just hard to say what employees will do.

I'm out completely at work.  4.5 months on T, 6 months out at work, 2 months with my new male nametag and people using my new name/male pronouns.  I pass as male with customers 80 percent of the time.  It's getting really awkward using the womens.  I talked to my managers but last consensus was that somehow not having a M on my license makes a whole world of difference and thus I needed to use the women's still.  I've been talking to my ZS and one of my assistant managers (they are the only ones in authority there I feel comfortable talking to)  I need to talk to my store manager soon about it but I'm really nervous about it.  I want to have policies and stuff first and experiences from other trans people at other Wal-Marts before I talk to him, so if he tries to pull the "Well legally you are classified as female" I can say well according to Wal-Mart policy and blah whatever.

I am still not that comfortable using a men's room, I don't even have an STP but I cannot keep using the women's.  My co-workers are like "what do you keep using the women's for if you are supposed to be a man?" and customers stare at me and look disgusted sometimes (i usually try to go when no ones in there but I've been caught)  I am going to definitely tell my store manager that it's beneficial to others viewing me as male that I stop using the women's cause that confuses them, and it could be dangerous if a woman catches me in there and feels like she or someone she knows should take actions against me outside of the store.

Wow that seems messed up. That's a good way of explaining it, if you bring up making customers uncomfortable they will feel like they have no other choice. People who know you pre-transition seem to be 'blind' to changes and don't get how others can see you as male untill the witness it first hand.

I will ask my FTM friend who still works there about policies. I can see why having that is a good back up if they try to bring up your legal gender marker crap.

As for STP, I don't have one either. I just sit down. It would be nice to have one but most of them are tricky.

Andy, Mekayla used to work at Wal-Mart. I don't know if she actively transitioned there.

I suspect that a lot of the way you're treated has to do with your specific area, regardless of what the company's policy is--but that's just an impression I get.

You could also do an advanced search for Wal-Mart (and Walmart) on the site--you might turn up one or two references by members who work there or have worked there.

It's good to know the policies in advance--what you're doing is smart.

BTW, when CAN you get your driver's license changed?

You can only get your gender marker changed on your license in my state if you've had hysto, or top (but wording for the letter by the top surgeon has to be a certain way) so it will be a year or more.

I believe Kaleb (bleedingembryo) on youtube worked at Walmart and he seemed to have an overall good experience.

Andy, I used to be a contract delivery person for Wal- worl. Different stores will treat you as different as night is to day. As for the rest room issue , I've heard all the horror stories on another forum . I generally use the "Family" restroom generally at the Site to Store in the back when I may be in doubt . I see trans customers in a few of the store I delivered to all the time . Hey, generally a conservative area will be the ones tobe hard on Transgendered individuals as opposed to say one in a more Metopolitian part of the state . ellen
See ya on the road folks !!!
