Advocate says Texas voter ID bill will force transgender people to out themselves at polls

Plano Republican Van Taylor said, "I think it is important to remember that this bill is about making sure that the right people show up on election day and vote."

As much as any group, the transgender community will be affected if — and when – this bill becomes law.

The guy's answer wasn't given or posted so we don't know how he explained his comment about "the right people".  My guess is "right people" = legally registered voters.

Except for those in transition, the trans ID thing is confusing to me.  If you're living full time in the gender opposite your birth, why would you be walking around with an ID that has your birth name or an old picture?  Would a transwoman get all dolled up then go out and greet people sounding like Barry White?  If she doesn't want to be outed, I would think, "NO!"

I understand the problem while you're in the process of changing everything but if you're going out to vote and your IDs don't match your presentation, revert to the old self, vote, then go home and change.  I did just that until my IDs were corrected.  And life went on.

I saw a news piece on this last night. I took it to be anti-Hispanic also.

I can't "revert to the old self." I've only been in physical transition for 6 months, and I couldn't pass as female without some serious makeup, wig, and clothes I don't own - at which point I'd look nothing like the picture on my ID.

(edit: to clarify, the current state of my ID is birth name, birth gender, and relatively current picture.)

Gee, now we are making the Texas legislators feel good to realize that they are getting two targets at once with their bill?? 

The hispanics AND the TG's !!!   Both at once!   

I just had a evil thought about using the Mormon genalogy records to find out whether some of our good white legialators had parents who were illegal aliens, or would have been under today's laws.  We could have two with one shot that way.  Its a silly idea, but --------------

Thank goodness we have compulsory voting here in Oz, no one can be prevented from voting.
They just ask your name, whether you have already voted on the day, and mark you off.  Thats's it. What you put on the ballot is up to you then, even if it's obscene suggestions of what you'd like to do to the PM or Premier.

I'm going to have to agree with Julie Marie. We, as a whole, have been having some serious issues with voter fraud in the past few elections and states are finally doing something about it. Showing a state-issued ID, which proves residency and is used to check against the registration lists, is an extremely small price to pay for ensuring more accuracy in our elections.

While his comment wasn't fully explained, I think that it was pretty clear he was talking about registered voters.
