While I do like the Dead, I can't say I've ever been a huge fan of them.  But part of the lyrics you quoted so made me think of of Bob Dylan though.  A couple of verses from his song Farewell to be specific.  They almost go together I think. :)

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone."

"I will write you a letter from time to time
As I'm ramblin' you can travel with me too
With my head, my heart and my hands, my love
I will send what I learn back home to you
[...]

I will tell you of the laughter and of troubles
Be them somebody else's or my own
With my hands in my pockets and my coat collar high
I will travel unnoticed and unknown
So it's fare thee well my own true love
We'll meet another day, another time."

Thanks for sharing the Greatfull Dead song.  :)

When I die, they will put me in a box and dispose of it in the cold ground. And in all the million ages to come, I will never breath, or laugh, or twitch again. So won't you run and play with me here among the teeming mass of humanity? The universe has spared us this moment.  -- Anonymous
