Are people serious when they talk about "traps"? What's your thought on it?

The phrase.

It's hard to tell whether its ignorance or joking, most of the time.

For those uncertain with the slang phrase, a "trap" is a biologically male character who passes as a girl or who can be mistaken for one. The opposite of that would be a "reverse trap". Basically it references to being mislead about a persons gender.

I believe it came from Star Wars, Admiral Ackbar saying it in Return of the Jedi, and 4chan came up with the connection a few years back; /b/ maybe?

I remember back when Hourou Musuko first aired. People had a vague interest in it, and a lot of the comments were of the "Lolololo, boring shota trap anime!" kind, and ignored basically everything the series was about.

I don't have much of a thought on the word, but I'm only fine with it if its referring to crossdressing. Using it to refer to a, say, transperson means you don't think of them as their gender. It's rude and ignorant. But a lot of people have this sort of viewpoint..

I look at it sort'a like when they call an under age girl "jailbait".Alot of people would call marriage a 'trap".I think it is a benign word

It's definitely not benign. "Trap" means "LOL that's a man!" It's the equivalent of being pointed and laughed at in the street - "Look! That ain't a woman - it's a ->-bleeped-<-! HAHAAAH! Hey, ->-bleeped-<- - can I suck your dick?"

...to which the only appropriate response is "Go learn some yoga and suck your own, you inflexible prick."

...that reply is hilarious on so many levels ;D !

Yes, that's pretty much what should be said. Followed by a good knee-to-the-crotch.

A trap is essentially a woman with a (hidden) penis who's very attractive and sexy. When you get aroused by looking at her, you've been "trapped" into being aroused by someone with a penis. A reverse trap is essentially someone who looks like a guy, gets you aroused, and then you've been "trapped" into being aroused by someone without a penis. It's not a benign word, as it reinforces all that jazz about trans people "tricking" cis people into believing they're women/men.
...that fey-looking freak kid with too many books and too much bodily fat

...and of course, it assumes that no-one in their right mind could be attracted to anyone who isn't either a transparent cismale or cisfemale.

You're most welcome. And, hey, next time you make a stupid post, I'll be more than happy to blast you over it again ;) !

Padma

Woah there, you two :) - I don't think Barbara's post was "stupid", she just expressed a different opinion from yours, E - and I don't think you "blasted" back, just came back a bit strong with a different opinion.

It's important that we can disagree respectfully here (I say this as someone who has not always managed that - and it always makes things worse rather than better).

...and sorry if I came on a bit schoolmarmish - that's a hat I don't own :).

(PS: I've decided it's time I changed my screen name, it's a bit too weird having two different weird names!)

When someone behaves like a child, admonishing them like one is only appropriate. I took no offense.

(PS: Weird question, but your old screenname - "yoxi" - would that be pronounced like in English or in Chinese? I assume the former, but... and since you've changed it, this'll be my last excuse to ask.)

Thankee. As the Romans used to say, ira furor brevis est (anger is a brief madness ;) - I learned most of my classics from Asterix books...)

The name came to me out of nowhere while I was writing poetry on Dartmoor (how affected is that!), and it's not in any actual language - but it's the name of the laughing coyote (from an Ursula Le Guin book) that I'd just got tattooed on my arm the day before. It's pronounced -ksee to rhyme with yoke-sea, but the K is the start of the 2nd syllable. Good grief, what a long explanation. Anyway, here she is:

A better response is to carry on as if they must have been talking to somebody else and I didn't even hear it.
It's easier to change your sex and gender in Iran, than it is in the United States.  Way easier.

Please read my novel, Dragonfly and the Pack of Three, available on Amazon - and encourage your local library to buy it too! We need realistic portrayals of trans people in literature, for all our sakes

Oh yeah, I wouldn't actually say that, I'm too scared of getting killed. It's just what I'd like to say.
