A California prisoner who has been diagnosed with gender identity disorder wants the state to pay for a sex-change operation.

The Los Angeles Times reports that a lawsuit filed on behalf of 42-year-old Lyralisa Stevens claims the state should be required to pay for her operation to become female over concerns for her safety. Stevens is currently being housed in an all-male facility. In court filings, her psychotherapist said she had "grave concerns' for Stevens' safety.
