KALAMAZOO — Writing to Baby Dee with email interview questions, I was worried that the story might take the wrong tone.

Dee has lived a different life. She's a transgendered performer who has played as a Catholic church music director, studied classical music, was a street performer and dressed as a half-man-half-woman "Bilateral Hermaphrodite" on exhibit at a Coney Island sideshow.

"I guess that's the price I have to pay for having such a colorful (or dodgy depending on your outlook) past," Dee wrote back from her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. "I'm certainly not proud of it. I met a lot of really sweet beautiful people in the freak show business but I don't think it was my best work."
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
