How can you tell if a cat is pregnant and the father is her son?

I'm helping look after my neighbor's cats for awhile since they left on vacation. The cats are a mother and her son. The mother seemed kind of fat and her stomach seemed to be round-ish but I have no idea how you can tell whether they are pregnant or not. Both the cats are not spayed or anything and only the mother cat and her son are the only pets. Can the mother tell that the other cat is her son? Or would she get pregnant with him? And any idea if they are pregnant, can they still be spayed or something? Please help!

That answers some of your question I believe. Welcome to the site btw, interesting first post... Not sure about the other answer. Worst case scenario if the cat is pregnant would the owner be willing to keep the kittens until they are ready to go to a shelter. Good luck with it

It's your neighbour's headache.

Speying a cat during pregnancy is the same as a human hysterotomy.

Speak to the cats, tell them it's not a good idea to get jiggy with each other.

Feline incest;
Must be something that the religious right can help us with (sorry just a joke).

Kinda make us realise the consequences of interfering with the natural process of nature. I know, in the wild, male cats tend to leave and join other groups.

Having said that, incest is not uncommon among rodents. This may be hopelessly out of date now, but I seem to recall that rodents have much shorter genomes so are apparently less likely to have recessive disorders. Though I confess that, from a mathematical logic aspect, that has never been particularly satisfying explaination.

I also seem to recall a study, which sadly I didn't manage to look at very deeply, where a brother and sister of an animal, I don't recall, were abandioned on an isolated area, long away from others of their species, I'm pretty sure it was somewhere in the Americas. Their off spring seemed to thrive. But the explaination was that, those offspring that showed signs of genetic disturbance would be abandoned by their peers, so eliminating genetic problems over several generations.

Hopefully, someone on here with more experteese in genetics can give us some better explainations.

A lot of cat owners seem to think that cats "understand" that incest is bad.... they don't, and it isn't "always" bad.
Put a non-neutered/spayed male and female together, and kittens will happen, sooner or later.

Agreed. It's not a horrible thing and when a female cat is in heat, any male in the neighborhood is going to try to get a piece.

I also second JohnR. Basically you're aborting the kittens by cutting out the cat's uterus and it really is your neighbor's issue to deal with. Do let them know that they should have their cats fixed though because it's really sad what a big problem this whole kitten uproar and cats in the pound is.

Depending on how far along she might be you should be able to palpate the fetuses.  If the son is the father, you can only tell once the kittens are born.

Most veterinaries will not abort a pregnancy unless the mother is in distress.  And incest in the animal kingdom is not a bad thing.  It is how the different breeds are developed.

Well, just for a change to wander off topic- not that I do often - daily maybe.

So according to those in the religious right there was Adam and Eve. Ok. Then there were babies, I presume. So who did they begat with? And I though incest was a sin.

Oh well

I asked this from several groups that claim to believe in the Eden alegory. Of these, all, apart from the Jehovah's Witnesses, refused to answer, either by changing the subject or making a blunt comment in return.

The Jehovah's witnesses pointed out that, according to the alegory, Adam lived for 900 or so years producing a huge number of children. He and they would have inter-bred. But that the physical problems would have been avoided by some divine intervention or perhaps because the genetic distortions which create the physical problems hadn't developed at that time.

There was an interesting twist to the whole notion which I read some years ago, which strangely, doesn't seem to have been taken up.

In the Genesis story, if you take it sequentially, the Earth was already populated by humans before the time of Adam and Eve. That Adam and Eve were not the first man and woman in the literal sense, but rather, the first two to possess an awareness of the holy spirit. Prior, according to that approach, humans were simply soulless animals.

Their children would have married and reproduced with some of the existing humans, pasing their awareness of the holy spirit, certainly onto their off spring, but possibly their partners and other humans as well.

The interesting thing about that approach is that it doesn't damage the alegorical nature, it explains a number of the questions, not least how, two people could have created so many.

The presumption that Adam and Eve were indeed the first humans would have meant that they must have been created on the 6th day. The Jehovah's Witnesses claim that the days are epochs, which allows for the long periods it would have taken to create existance. But they do insist that the epochs are of equal length, which is a problem. Other groups seem to refuse to accept that the days were anything other than days. The few I had the temerity to confront with the Genesis account, that the world was populated by men on the 6th day, refused to accept it and said they didn't need to check!

Not really important I suppose, but just thought I'd put it in pot for what it's worth. The Christian tradition has held, since at least the 1st century, that the story was indeed an alegory. The claims that it is literaly seem to have mostly emerged in 19th century America, along with claims that the rest of the world things the earth is flat.

Thanks Spacial,
Love this c**p. I love the idea that the JW's will interpret it all to suit a theory that sort of goes against the religious right argument that the bible is literally true. Their argument also throws in the E word. Evolution. Oh my golly gosh god didn't create humans, they evolved. Now that's a bit of a problem.

I remember when I was doing my A levels (a unique UK torture to decide if you can go to University or not) I was struggling through my biology study at home and got a door knock from , a charming, female  JW preacher/person. So I got into evolution. I was told that the environment controlled how we develop. My tabby cat in the 'African Jungle' would grow up to  be a lion. Ignoring all the obvious stuff, and basic biology, I was struck by her commitment to the idea. This must be 43 years ago. I still remember it.

Strange world. Still remember she was very cute and nice. Just Nuts. IMO

Oh I passed the exam with flying colours and yes there was a question on the theory of evolution
