Like many people who stand out for being "different," Andrew "Andii" Viveros has endured his share of bullying, taunts and beatings. That's, sadly, all too normal in today's society -- much as it was in yesterday's.

[...]

At a time when suicides of bullied gay teens are making headlines far too often, Viveros' courage in standing up heels, skirt and all for who he is and how he expects society to accept him is as commendable as his classmates' decision to reward his bid with the coveted title of prom queen. It's the kind of message of pride, courage and acceptance we could use more of, one that could help chip away at the hate, bias and denigration that beat down so many kids struggling to find their place in the world.
