My forum name covers this question pretty well. (Roll is from Megaman!)
Aside from her, honorable mentions to Tali from Mass Effect (i wuv Tali), Cammy from Street Fighter, and Leon from Resident Evil. I'm going to also give a shout out to Golbez from FF4 and GlaDOS and Wheatley from Portal on the villains front.
Oh, and Catherine the Great from Civ 4. Does that count? ;D (IMP/CHR MASS EXPANSION FOR THE WIN. FIN was overpowered and no fun.)
Samus Aran from the Metroid series!

Haha, same. In the original SF2 I was never big on Chun Li for some reason despite normally gravitating to female characters, and Ken was my man. Particularly as the series went on and his ->mk became amusing to me because my friend I played with the most who was way better than me in general just couldn't wrap his head around the double hit. But the second Cammy was in the picture she was my go to. (Speaking of fighters and playing female characters, I really did that so much it is ridiculous in retrospect. I wonder if I would have been better at fighting games if not for the repressed trans issue making it psychologically necessary for me to play as female characters 99% of the time. Who knows, maybe with E. Honda I would have gone pro! ... Probably not.)

Glados is the classic, but Wheatley... Wheatley is just the best. Also, Stephen Merchant.

I never let that bother me when playing fighting games, i guess it was more just about using video game violence as a means to repress being trans ie beating the crap out of someone.. lol so i got pretty good at it, however going online with Street Fighter iv made me think otherwise sometimes hahaha im actually better at Tekken anyway
Im still hoping for a Portal 3 ... i knowww Valve cant count that far but a girl can dream right?

Valve are too busy doing... something or other. Wait, what even are they doing? There's no way the steam dev team is their primary game dev team and just maintaining it takes all of their resources, right? ... Right?
And now I feel the urge to start beginning everything I say with "Cave Johnson here!" even if it has been years since that game came out.

Valve has pretty much laid off all their game devs. The main story writers behind HL2 and Portal no longer work there. I'm at the point where I want them to license out the different properties to other studios so we can at least get some game!! I feel like Portal is too good of a game series to let decay, as well as Left 4 Dead. 😩

I heard that Valve is working on some full VR games though. Fingers crossed for a new HL or Portal game!
There's supposed to be a Portal-esque game coming to console soon, Bridge Constructor. I just found out it's available for Android/iOS right now (for $5). It's far from a Portal 3, but it looks like it could be fun. Anyone try it yet?

Late last year they were teasing HL 3 ..... but my inner voice kept saying no Portal 3, Portal 3, Portal 3 LOL
The whole thing about the Bridge Constructor game wasn't developed by Valve. It's actually a game that's been out for a while that has been re-released with Portal themed elements. IF they are doing anything with VR, that's not a good idea. VR is one of those things that are starting to lose steam because it's SOOOO expensive to get into. By this point you HAVE to give up on HL3. It's not coming. They refuse to acknowledge it and act like it doesn't exist. The main writer posted a synopsis of what HL3 was going to be on his blog if you want to go check it out. The last game that Valve has made themselves and have announced was Artifact which is another >-bleeped-<ty card game based off another IP in the same vein as Hearthstone. I more than anyone else would like them to make another big name, but they have just grown content with raking in the money from Steam than to make anything interesting. 😔

I admit, I thought the same thing about VR until recently playing around the PS VR. It is the right price and quality. (I have a Samsung Gear VR, which is fun but just a gimmick for the most part.) Prices on the high end stuff needs to drop another 500+, but when it does I now believe the VR industry is going to only skyrocket.

I have to admit I am a total VR convert. I have an Oculus Rift and having played games like Fallout 4 VR, Elite: Dangerous and even Skyrim in VR I have to say that the experience is something else. It's something you just can't describe adequately. The Rift is about half the price now that it was when I got it, and it's something I would recommend to anyone with a PC capable of running it. After playing Elite: Dangerous in VR, I can't go back to playing it on a monitor. I just can't. The sense of scale, and total immersion, and like you're actually there is beyond amazing. VR turns games into actual experiences, and for me personally, that's worth the money.
Over Christmas I took part in this, and it was so amazing. It felt like being in a movie. Actually IN a movie.

Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher series is easily my favorite video game character. He's extremely well written, has depth to his personality, is well voice acted, has absolutely amazing facial animations and he looks like a >-bleeped-<ing badass. And he's got a whole host of interesting companions to play off of.
When you guys play VR are you constantly aware of the fact that the resolution is halved (approximately) so that each eye can get different frames? Or am I wrong in thinking this is the case?
Also, in VR games where you can teleport how often do you choose to do so?

In my experience, I didn't notice resolution at all. Honestly, it sort of like... blurs together a bit in a way that creates a natural anti aliasing, if that makes sense? I'm not sure any I've played teleport in the way you mean (Ie: fast travel in skyrim I assume).

In some VR games they employ teleportation in lieu of or in addition to standard movement controls.
Here's a video demonstrating it's use in Doom and Fallout. There's a nice explanation in the video description.

For me, no. If you have a good enough GPU you can compensate for that a lot by increasing the quality of the HMD display beyond what it's set at for minimum requirements. Sometimes by a significant amount. The resolution is lower than playing on a monitor, yes, but your brain just sort of compensates for it and you really don't notice it at all. Or I don't. It's more interesting to me just how many of the gaps the brain does fill in, in order to accept something as a complete experience. One of the first experiences I did was one where I was standing on the top of a really high skyscraper. Which in itself was an achievement, for me, but in spite of it looking obviously like a game (complete with giant alien flying saucer and huge mech), I felt a real feeling of vertigo and got butterflies in my stomach when I looked down. That's the thing about VR. If it's close enough to the real thing, the brain makes the leap.
As for teleportation, the only game I've played where it's an option is Fallout 4 VR. And I turned it off. Swapped to the direct movement option instead. It feels way too unnatural for me. I can see the use, and the point of it, but it breaks my immersion a lot.
Master Chief from the Halo franchise
(http://abload.de/image.php?img=halo-mccjpg-bc17eb_127xo4w.jpg)
He kills aliens and isn't afraid of anything (it is a meme)
Irenicus from Baldurs Gate 2.
Sheer brilliance, easily the best bad guy ever.

Have you played Lego Dimensions? The Portal level in there is really well done, and might as well be Portal 3.
As for my favorites... Tera (FFVI), Yufie (FFVII), Glados, Solid Snake, Alicia & Edy from Valkyria Chronicles. I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them at the moment. There is no villain greater than Kefka from FFVI.

Not many villains accomplish their goal like that. Also, the music.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgcbShn9x8g
Haha, when I saw the title of this thread, Kefka was my first thought!
As a protagonist, hmmm . . . Ezio Auditore.
I can't pick one!
Thrall/Go'el from the Warcraft Universe is probably my favorite. His story of being born, taught to fight for terrible reasons, overcoming that upbringing, being smart and strong, finding a heritage, and leadership all before WoW even begins, then in WoW to find his roots, then his bad choices, it's so rich. He made me want to play the shaman I've had for 12 years.
Zelda from OoT, probably my favorite version of the character. She was at once feminine yet entirely strong, entirely willing to disobey to save her people, and worked so hard to avoid what happened, and still fought on beyond that.
Terra from FFVI. FFVI is, outside of WoW, my favorite game ever. In fact, when I worked in wrestling, a remix of Terra's theme was my favorite ring entrance music. :-) She's used and abused but when given the choice she chooses to fight for the right and best reasons. After the world is destroyed she then takes up the defense of children and finds a new, equally right reason to fight. I can understand how she feels, that she may not be able to feel love not being fully human, and I've felt that way being trans. She's one of the first female protagonists I was able to sync with and it meant a lot how strong she was despite her vulnerabilities.
ITT - Really good choices!
ITP - Not so good choices(lol)
I saw this topic and I like jumped at the opportunity, but quickly drew a blank. I guess I hadn't really thought about the characters I like the most in games. But usually for me, is more identified with, and I would say as melee, brawler, or monks. The other character that I always talk too much about, and really enjoyed(and still enjoy in certain versions) is Sonic the Hedgehog. But I also understand that he's not exactly the most three-dimensional character and is basically just a marketing amalgamation that now, somehow, has one of the most screwed-up and toxic fanbases ever.
Anyway, back to melee. I'm looking at Final Fantasy, mostly, cause that's what I played a lot of growing-up. And for me it was Tifa Lockeheart first-and-foremost from FFVII, then Zell from FFVIII, and I also really liked Yda from FFXIV. And while I still like those characters, I think because of my transition I actually enjoy others a bit more now. Like Lulu and Yuna from the original FFX.
Truth is, if someone just started naming off games, I could pick hundreds, but I think I don't actually have a 'favorite' video game character...is that sad, as a game designer?
Leisure Suit Larry was released right around the time I got into computers. and as a hormonal teen right down my ally. Have never been much into games since... So I guess Leisure SUit Larry it is (hahaha and now I revealed that i am not 39 anymore)

the all time best villain, only one minus ardyn to actually accomplish his goal (and unlike ardyn did it in a timely matter) (in final fantasy history anyway)
But my all time favorite Video game character would have to be Lucca from Chrono Trigger
Always had a thing for smart chicks, and they dont come any smarter than one who accidentally crates a time machine (and learns to control it in a timely matter lol)
Nova from starcraft favorite villian The Lich King from Wc3/WoW
Gonna have to break this into some catergories:
Visual noveleqsue: Larry Butz! from Pheonix Wright series, hes such a goober but so cool.
Shin Megme Tensei titles: Kanji from p4/ Ryuji from p5 bit of a tie. They bother fall under: Blonde, Delqiuent, Heart of purest gold. Like my weakness man, weaknesses.
Jrpgs: Alvin from Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2, i just have a thing for walking disasters ;D But hes Gun sword combo is fun as all get out to fight with too.
I really like Ellie from The Last of Us, and Chloe from Life is Strange is a lot like me in some ways (blue hair, punk, adventurous, angry at life because of family issues) but unlike me in others (very naïve, loud voice, bit more of a teenager in general). I like Gauge from Borderlands 2 (partly because of her look and abilities, but mostly because she randomly screams "Anarchy!" in battle sometimes, and I identify with that) and Zer0 from the same game is also cool. Lulu from Final Fantasy X looks kinda like me irl, except that she's much more feminine than me atm, and I love her dress and the way she casually brings her teddy to fights.
Some video game characters deserve a mention, but don't quite make my list because they originated in other mediums: Jackie Estacado from The Darkness (I love the original comics) and Geralt of Rivia, from the Witcher series (in this case, I enjoy the latest game more than the books. The Witcher 3 was amazing, but I do like the book's version of Geralt a little more). I like Ciri, too; she's a badass and I love her hair.
My new absolute favorite is Markus from Detroit: Become Human. I really like his character, and the changes he goes through in the game; he's got a little bit of Neo, Martin Luther King Jr, Ghandi, and idk what else wrapped up inside of him, and all the parallels to history and other bits of modern culture makes him really interesting to watch and play. I made him a pacifist my first time through, and I'm curious to see if he'll end up more like Malcolm X or something if I make him violent for my second run.
Connor was cool too, and more attractive and approachable imo, but I liked Marcus' character and story more overall, so Connor gets second place on my list.
Hmm....either Ezio Auditore or Vivi from final fantasy.

the others are great choices too but I want to pull out a villain near the top of my list but for reason I can't and wont talk about her much
I would openly say I fear her but that gives her power over me lol
Mine has to be my character Sally in Fallout 4. Me and Piper roaming the wasteland.
Mine is Beat from Jet Set Radio.
It's really difficult to pick just one, but I would say... Mario. Since I was little, it's the character I've always considered the epitome of videogames. Moreover, I've always wished I could look like princess Peach, so pretty and elegant and blonde... :D
Tie between Roxas and Axel, maybe Axel winning by a bit. Both from Kingdom Hearts, obviously :)
It's hard to choose favorite characters, but I definitely give my first votes for Garrus "Archangel" Vakarian and Urdnot Wrex (though I like almost every character in Mass Effect series lol, even not main or even not from Normandy, it was really amazing game, hate EA for ruin it).
