Title: Jelly Bean Counting Contest
Post by: Devlyn on March 23, 2018, 04:00:39 PM
(https://www.susans.org/forums/gallery/0/13844-230318152828.jpeg)

In my hands is a one gallon square glass jug filled with Starburst jelly beans. You guess how many.

The rules are:

One guess per post.

No consecutive posting, someone else must post between your guesses.

Contest ends Sunday April 1 at midnight EST.

Winner will be the person who guesses closest without going over.

Winner will be announced April 2nd and will have the option of actually receiving the jelly beans and jar, or making a donation to the site in order to prevent me from sending the jelly beans to them.  ;D

Jelly beans were weight counted on a calibrated scale. That is the number that will be used to determine the winner.

In the event of a tie the first contestant to guess the number wins.

Cindy quickly converts an American gallon to an imperial gallon divide by 4.5 to convert to litres. Changes the starburst jelly bean inches to centimetres and uses the Devlyn hand size conversion unit matrix, takes daylight saving into account and the cool change forecast this afternoon.

1700 is probably a low end estimate. Those estimating in the low 2000s still are likely to be winners.

A Mathemagician Who Shall Not Be Named sent me this....

Best Answer:  Well, let's make a calculation based on some assumptions:

➊ we are talking about an imperial gallon = 4.546 L (1 L = 1 litre)
(If you wish to re-do the estimate with an American gallon, use 3.785 L instead)

➋ 1 jellybean has a volume of say, 1.5 cm³

➋ some of the space in the jug will be air, as the beans don't "stack" and fill every available space, so let's "inflate" the average volume of the bean, and the air wasted space around it, to 2 cm³

A container of size 1 L will occupy 1000 cm³ of space
∴ a 1 gallon or 4.546 L container will occupy 4546 cm³ of space

∴ 4546 cm³ of space ÷ 2 cm³/jellybean & air = 2273 jellybeans

Let's round that down to the nearest 50 and say 2250 jellybeans.

...which would be impressive as heck.....if they knew how to count past two!

I'm using the hand/boob method in my calculations.
How many right boob handfuls would it take?
I know it would take a few more handfuls if I used my left boob.
Then I take the average and presto!
Now this of course is an entirely personal formula and ymmv.

This is science!  Jessica

Well, I didn't know that :)  And,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I was thinking there are only two jellybeans and the rest are those little packing material things that you use to ship electronic parts in non-static bags!!!!

Just kidding.  I know that you carefully place grocery bags in the jar with the beans glued on.

... He can't sleep anyways, so he decides to count the visible beans by color:

- 26 green ones
- 32 yellow ones
- 50 orange ones
- 24 purple ones
- 25 red ones

= 157 visible jelly beans
Considerably less green, purple and yellow ones (what's with that?)

...Makes an estimation of times that said amount of beans can fit in a jar. Pretty sure it's greater than x10 times... x20 times...

...Gives up and picks one... offers 3,297 number of beans

...Wonders why he talks about himself in the third person

...Returns back to sleep, realizing that counting beans is more satisfying than counting sheep

Edit:

...Wonders how Devlyn figured out the exact number of beans in the jar

As I am a little afraid of getting stuck with a bunch of Jelly Beans that I don't really care for, I am going to give everybody a little help coming closer to the correct number.

I counted 12 to 13 beans across the face of the jar. If you cube 12, you get 1728. If you look at the corners you will see they are rounded so instead of using 12.5 or 13, I used 12 and rounded down giving my 1700 number.

November Fox had a good start and then made a mistake. With 157 across the face, the square root of 157 is is about 12.53, cubing that gives 1967.

Now this is an approach I didn't think of however it's useful information. Look at the following.
7 bags = 1750
8 bags = 2000
9 bags = 2250
Given the above information, 1750 or 2000 are likely numbers but remember the contents of a bag is an approximation so a little higher or a little lower are equally likely possibilities.

Let the guessing resume.

I like all the maths, but I said they were Starburst jelly beans, and Google will tell you that the bags come in a wide variety of sizes...

Here's a stable number: it IS a gallon of jelly beans.

If the winner balks at taking the beans, I'll foist them off on the candy stripers at the local hospital. You don't want that on your conscience!

The Candy Stripers will have to suffer. One easter morning we awoke to discover my sister had devoured the entire contents of her easter basket. This was no small feat because there must have been close to 2 pounds of candy in each basket. As the oldest, my mom asked me to share the contents of my basket with my sister so she would have something for the next few days. She could have had all my jelly beans and I wouldn't have cared but my mom also divided the chocolate, something I am still considering is if I will forgive her. Fortunately I got to keep the giant hollow easter bunny and only the chocolate covered candy was divided.

I didn't make a ton of guesses. My first guess of 1700 still stands but I made suggestions for others to use. Remember there is a one guess per post restriction and because 1700 is contained in each post where I work with numbers, I have only made one guess.
