GOP lawmakers push "separate but equal" for transgender people

By John Russell (9 Feb 2024)

Iowa's Republican-dominated House Education Committee approved a controversial anti-trans bill Tuesday that includes troubling language reminiscent of the racist "separate but equal" legal doctrine.

House Study Bill 649, proposed by Gov. Kim Reynolds (R), would require the state to list both the sex a transgender person was assigned at birth and their gender identity on their updated birth certificate. The committee voted to remove a similar requirement for driver's licenses on Tuesday, according to the Iowa Capital Dispatch.

The bill defines terms like "sex," "male," and "female" according to reproductive anatomy and bans trans people from sex-segregated spaces like bathrooms, locker rooms, domestic violence shelters, and detention facilities that align with their gender identity.

During Tuesday's subcommittee hearing, University of Iowa doctoral student Emma Denney compared the bill's ID requirements to Nazis forcing LGBTQ+ people to wear pink triangles. "You are trying to do the same thing again here in Iowa by forcing trans people to have unique designations on our identification," Denney told the committee. "Trans people already face overwhelming employment and housing discrimination in Iowa under existing law, and the governor's bill would force us to out ourselves and open ourselves up to more violence anytime we have to show an identification."

Transgender Iowan here. This is very scary. And it is a precursor to what Reynolds really wants: outlawing transgender people from public spaces. I have little doubt that once she forces us to have both female and male on our ID, she will create a law saying anyone with a female designation of any kind can't be in men's spaces and anyone with a male designation of any kind can't be allowed in women's spaces. And transgender people, being forced to have both designations, will be outlawed from both women's and men's spaces.

Once trans people are identifiable then it is open season to round us up and eliminate by any true GOP citizen doing their civic duty to protect women and children.

My politics are fairly radical at the moment, which I say as a fair warning.

The bill in questions makes me go reread 'ten stages of genocide', which can be found here-

Looking objectively, how many of the criteria are fully or partially met? I leave it as a matter of conscience. My understanding is WWII, nazi-style death camps are rare among genocides. Historically, genocide has taken the form of sanctioned violence. Whatever I believe, I am not yet ready to imagine death camps in America. I can imagine a kind of don't-care violence, along the lines of pre-civil rights movement lynchings. I say that with a very heavy heart and much sadness.

I wish the president or other national democratic figures would regularly and forcefully denounce all anti-trans legislation. I evaluate their support as luke warm on a good day. Again, this is all hugely personal and this is my opinion. I fault no one for different views and opinions.

I am watching every local election and participating in the political process fully. While I live in the bubble called Massachusetts, which is held to be a 'safe state', I am also aware their were 23 attempted book bannings last year. Because a book banning here would be national news. It has never been more important to understand local elections down to the level of the school board.

sigh.  food for thought on a sunday.

That's was the point I was making, there wouldn't be any rounding up, there would be no need. The "Citizens" will be riled up by the GOP, mainstream, and social media to perform the individual elimination as a duty.
