Title: What music are you listening to now 1.0
Post by: ChrissyRyan on May 07, 2024, 02:45:57 PM
Here is an oldie:

"It's the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance" is a key thought from this song that was commissioned the night before a famous horse race.

I love songs with a story behind them.

In Blues Image's song Ride Captain Ride, many believe that the song is about Sir Francis Drake sailing along the West Coast. But that isn't the case.

Blues Image lead singer Mike Pinera wrote this with their keyboard player Skip Konte. Mike's wife Valerie said:

"Ride Captain is a story from his imagination. I know when he was in the studio recording that album, they needed another song and he wrote it on the spot. He came up with 73 from the keyboard having 73 keys. A lot of people say it relates to a few different stories."

The keyboard they used was a Rhodes electric piano, and this was an early use of the instrument on a popular song. In an interview, Skip Konte says he sat at the piano and started working on a song.

"73 men sailed up, From the San Francisco Bay..." The song basically wrote itself. It was their only hit. Mike Panera moved to Iron Butterfly and Skip Konte joined Three Dog Night.

This is a true story that happened to me when I was camping in the forest...

Except, he wasn't a wizard, and he didn't have a cloak of gold...

OK, ok. So I spent the night drinking with some homeless guy.

Great topic ChrissyRyan!

I went down the Miley Cyrus rabbit hole after watching her cover of The Cranberries "Zombie" at Whiskey A Go Go. My wife and daughter just shake their heads as it is all Miley all the time for me.

I swear "She's not him" speaks directly to me!

So interesting to see everyone's posts and  what they like - a nice Christmas night tour!

Enjoy the rest of the day everyone!

I have always been a big fan of Gordon Lightfoot and his music.  Song for a Winter's Night is a big favourite of mine.  When Gord died a couple of years ago, there were a lot of covers of his music being played. This cover of Winter's Night by a group I'd never heard of, the Good Lovelies, blew me away.

It is appropriate for the weather we are having.

Hi everyone - I love this thread!

Miley does have quite the vocal range doesn't she. I drove 500 km today and listened to her Younger Now and Endless Summer albums as well as a mix of old and new Goo Goo Doll albums as I grew up across the river from Buffalo, NY.

I went to a proper hair salon for the first time on Thursday in my old home town after googling "queer-friendly hair salons near me" and when I explained to my stylist Ally that this was my first time as a woman her smile blinded me. It turns out that she started the salon with her friends - one of whom transitioned in 2020 - because the one that they all worked out was not as diversity friendly as they wanted. I showed Ally a picture of Miley Cyrus performing The Cranberries "Zombie" and asked if she could help me come close to attaining that look and she said that I was almost there and we both bonded over our respect for Miley's ethos and musical range. It was quite the fun experience and the icing on the cake was meeting her colleague, and our fellow traveller, who gave me some excellent advice, including her parting words of "you got this sister."

Thank you for this thread Chrissy!

I hope you all are having a lovely evening!

Something completely diffent for me this week.

+6 hours performance - Richard Wagner "Götterdämmerung" (Twilight of Gods) - in one of the best European Opera Houses. Not a second boring.

No, not my 'normal' listening, but I studied in Bayreuth, the town of the annual Wagner Festival, and got infected by the virus (latency was 20 years)

Golden Earring - Twilight Zone

A bit of trivia for you. The title of the song, "Twilight Zone" had nothing to do with Rod Serling's TV show by the same name, nor the movie that followed.

The song is based on a much older story about a hitman who botches a job, is disavowed by his employers, and realizes only too late that he has been double-crossed. That story is from the original novel by Robert Ludlum, "The Bourne Identity".

Okay, so this is actually one of my favourite songs of all time. And I recently got directed to Henk Poort, a legit opera singer, doing a cover of it.

And no this isn't because Floor Jansen is in this show.... even though I would marry that girl in a heartbeat. Nothing to do with that whatsoever! :P

Any Steve Winwood fans?

Here is a blast from the past. (1971) Yeah, my freshman year in high school!

For context, "low spark" refers to "a strong undercurrent at street level". The Woodstock Festival was an example.

In this case, "Low spark of high-heeled boys" referred to rebels on the street corner who wore leather jackets and cowboy boots.

Yeah. Sure, it did. < wink, wink >

"And the thing that disturbs you is only the sound of The low spark of high-heeled boys."

Power ballads 70's 80's 90's (not Rock ballads, there's a difference)

Ex. November Rain, Guns and Roses; Love IS On the Way, Saigon Kick

Yeah. Sure, it did. < wink, wink >

"And the thing that disturbs you is only the sound of The low spark of high-heeled boys."

Not sure why... it scratches an itch. I kind of swing from metal to electronica depending on my mood.

Great song! I love Electronica. It can reproduce the sound of any instrument, including some that have never been invented.

This is the song I think of when I think of this place. A lot of people don't like Blue Man Group, but they do some crazy stuff, like paint drums, percussion instruments made out of PVC pipes, banging a grand piano with a huge mallet, and lots of drums. High energy, music with a beat, wild guitars, lots of familiar symbols including rainbow lights, and Venus Hum singing "I Feel Love." Just like here, we have crazy stuff going on, but it all works together to create a great vibe to show our love for everyone.

I forgot the singer's name, but she does a great job with that song.

Venus Hum is the name of the band. The drummer has a congenital ear problem where a blood vessel is too close to his ear drum. He constantly hears his own heartbeat. The condition is called a Venous Hum, hence the name of the band, Venus Hum.

I have that.  Left ear.  Usually in the mornings its REALLY LOUD.  Otherwise I can tune it out during the day.  Keeping music going also helps.  i wonder if That drummer uses his music to drown it out?

I had it wrong, Wikipedia says it is a heart condition that causes it:

"Venus Hum is an electronic pop music group from Nashville, Tennessee, consisting of vocalist Annette Strean and multi-instrumentalists Kip Kubin and Tony Miracle. Miracle has a rare heart condition which results in perpetually hearing his own heartbeat in his ears. This condition is known as "venous hum", from which the group's name is derived."

I think listening and/or playing music would be an effective way to handle that.

It hard for me not to feel this way some days... Michael Jackson 'They Don't Care About Us'

All I wanna say is that they don't really care about us
All I wanna say is that they don't really care about us
Tell me what has become of my rights
Am I invisible 'cause you ignore me?
Your proclamation promised me free liberty, now
I'm tired of bein' the victim of shame
They're throwin' me in a class with a bad name
I can't believe this is the land from which I came
You know I really do hate to say it
The government don't wanna see
But it Roosevelt was livin', he wouldn't let this be, no, no

Sometimes you hear something and it just... it hits you hard. I've been trying to find this track for years. This is... this is the soundtrack to my childhood. I heard it when I was a kid, very early one morning on a radio show and it struck a massive chord with me. I didn't realise the significance at the time but looking back now, it speaks volumes about how I was feeling at the time.

And on the subject of older stuff that is part of the soundtrack to your life... this is another one. I know it got used with creepy Ezra Miller fondling someone in slo-mo and being really icky... not a good fit. But this song gives me chills every time I listen to it.

This song played when Susan and I walked down the aisle to become 'partners in life'. We've had many difference through the years, and I still don't understand why she stayed by my side. I have asked her, and she simply says 'because I love you.' I can't listen to this song without tears forming. Sometimes, people are just meant to be together.

Love always -- Jessica Rose

I love this album!

I heard a story about the band. This album was such an iconic sound, it rocketed to the top of the charts. With their success, the band decided to get new equipment. They sold all of their old stuff and bought new. When their second album didn't have the same success, they were told that it didn't sound the same. They sold all of their new equipment and bought back their old stuff, and the band was back at the top of the charts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xXPyAhHhXc

I particularly like the lyrics of this one.

Hear me, I want you to hear me, my cries
See me, as I want you to see me alive

Life, it feels eternal when you're close to me
A bird without its wings cannot be free
Your spirit feels a cold embrace that slowly fades

Rise, I see a future bright and crystal clear
Be brave, aim higher, and don't disappear
Defy the odds into eternity and endlessly

Heal me, I want you to heal me
My heart

And in the dark, I see you hiding from the light
Your destiny there, written in the stars, until the end of time

Heal me, I want you to heal me, my heart
See me, as I want you to see me alive

Breathe (breathe), and through the pain and tears, we truly feel
You'll find a way through chaos, and the fear
No soul denies a symmetry that's meant to be

Fly (fly), your wings will catch the wind, and set you free
Cast off the weight, and dreams will reappear
A King and Queen, ride on eternally, forever free

Free me, I long to be free

And in the dark, I see you hiding from the light
Your destiny there, written in the stars, until the end of time

Hear me, I want you to hear me, my cries
See me, as I want you to see me, to be alive

Step in the light, your heart is fighting for your life
We resonate a dueled fate lives, deep within the grand design

See me, I want you to see me
Hear me, as I want you to hear me

Free me (see), I want you to free me (it's my time to rise from the debris)
Heal me (break), as I want you to heal me (all the chains on me)
See me (breathe), I want you to see me (and release the toxic energy)
Hear me (find), as I want you to hear me (your serenity)
Be alive

I love it.

One of my favorite concert experiences is The Blue Man Group. They have a bit of a cult following here in the Midwest U.S., and many people don't appreciate their talents. They are percussionists, but also comedians, always remaining in character (no talking/singing), and they invent their own instruments or use instruments in an unusual fashion. Most of their inventions are just lengths of PVC pipe, but they also play a grand piano by smacking it with a huge mallet.  ;D  They have bands for back-up and various singers that perform with them.

I wish the video was better, but... YouTube. I have it on DVD.

I forgot to mention the boat antennas that they whip around, and the paint drums out front that spray paint when they beat them.  ;D

I have another one they did, but I didn't find it as good. The Complex is my favorite.

I enjoy songs with meaningful lyrics. These songs can be interpreted in so many ways, some quite deep. Overall, The Complex is about how society dehumanizes us into corporate drones. Most people don't realize they are victims, but some people are aware or become aware.

People who have become aware are called "Roof Dwellers" (from the song "Up To The Roof"). The lyrics talk about people who have followed what society wants from them, but found no reward in doing so. So they begin their own search by going up the fire escape to the roof.

In "Persona" (meaning "mask"), they talk about putting it on each morning, going outside, and disappearing into the crowd (becoming one of the corporate drones). In the evening, they take off the mask and discover "there's another one underneath". Later in the show, the Blue Men wear welding masks, and they all look the same. When they take off their masks, they realize that the others have unique facial features. That there is a real person behind the mask.

I could go on and on. But I won't.  ;D

If you haven't the German, listen and watch the video on youtube.com.

Reminds me of this...

I think I still prefer the original a little bit better, mostly because it reminds me of my childhood...but this is a good cover.

I have a massive love/hate relationship with this song. I love it for what it is. But it was played to death over the radio when I was training for the Navy. I remember listening to this song while standing on an A4 sheet of cardboard at 4am in the morning trying to get a boiler suit to the same size, for an inspection in 2 hours, having only gotten 2 hours sleep. They seemed to play this with two other songs, over and over and over.

The other two were:

And

I swear they played those three songs on a loop. I have hated ironing ever since. :P

We all have different tastes in music. While there is music we listen to every day, occasionally we simply want something different. I am in awe with Anna Lapwood. She plays pipe organs, those gigantic, haunting beasts that can fill all the nooks and crannies of a building, and of your soul, with echoing beauty.

Love always -- Jess

Wow. I saw one of the knobs on the organ was marked "Tubular Bells".

On one of my old-time favorites, the album Tubular Bells, Mike Oldfield plays over twenty different instruments, layering one over the other to create this instrumental masterpiece.

I don't think I've ever said this before and that's my fault. I've known you a long time, Kim. You are always there for people. Always been there. Offering your perspective on everything. And... girl... I am so proud of you for getting clean and dealing with stuff. It's a hard thing to do for a lot of people. Trust me I know. One of my brothers was hooked on heroin. He had to scream in a room with my mum by his side, for a week straight, to get clean of that junk.

Anyone who can turn their life around like that is a legit hero(ine). You have my utmost respect and admiration, Kim.
