No work, no school, no shopping: What to know about the Jan. 30 general strike

Ryan Adamczeski (29 Jan 2026)
Organizers are ready to hit the Trump administration where it hurts the most – in the wallet.
Activists are calling for a national general strike on Friday to protest Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity across the country, but particularly in Minnesota, where nearly 3,000 federal agents have been deployed as part of an aggressive crackdown on supposed fraud.
Organizers of the general strike are asking people to not go to work, not go to school, and not purchase anything on January 30. This creates both an economic blackout, and the opportunity to participate in local protests against ICE.
"The entire country is shocked and outraged at the brutal killings of Alex Pretti, Renee Good, Silverio Villegas González, and Keith Porter Jr. by federal agents," the National Shutdown website states. "While Trump and other right wing politicians are slandering them as 'terrorists,' the video evidence makes it clear beyond all doubt: they were gunned down in broad daylight simply for exercising their First Amendment right to protest mass deportation."
"Every day, ICE, Border Patrol and other enforcers of Trump's racist agenda are going into our communities to kidnap our neighbors and sow fear," it continues. "It is time for us to all stand up together in a nationwide shutdown and say enough is enough!"

The Denver Post reported today that dozens of businesses in Denver will be closed in support of the protest. Major cities across the country are mobilizing against this regime.
Be safe out there.
Be safe out there.

USA Income Tax season is getting into full swing... there is NO WAY that
I am going to close my CPA business. I am at the point that I will be starting
to work 6 or 7 days a week until late April.
Explain to me how this hits the Trump Administration in the wallet?
Instead it immediately hurts small businesses, lower income families that
are now having a difficult time paying their bills....
...and encouraging our kids to not go to school? Why take it out on our
children's education and their ability to learn in order for them to have a more
successful life?

I read a different article about this, and it said that the intent was to get everyone to stop what they are doing and get out in the streets and protest. I think it is more about numbers in attendance, which is visible, vs invisible tax dollars.
I remember doing taxes from January to May, working 18 hours a day. We even put in a full day on Easter Sunday. I know that's your payday, so stock up on coffee and chocolate.

That's precisely what people are protesting. They're protesting an administration built on hate, judgement, intolerance and systemic oppression. But mostly, they're trying to counter the extinction burst event that got it us here 17 years ago.

Striking and protesting is why we in the UK have better workers rights, more paid holiday, Universal healthcare, sick leave, maternity and paternity leave, equal opportunities, etc etc etc. Europe too. We weren't gifted these rights, we and those who came before us fought for them.
Americans really should consider going out on strike more often, your government is ran by corporations, who stamp all over you. Corporations only care about profit and strikes hurt their profits and can force them to effect change. It's sad to see from the outside. You all deserve better.
General strikes have brought down governments and get social change to the masses. Sometimes you have to take a hit if you want to better your lives and those of your children in the future.

Everyone's opinion matters.
We learn when we hear what others have to say. If everyone just butted out, we could assume that we are alone in what we are experiencing. When others chime in, who have no skin in the game, we realize that others see what we see. We are not imagining it.
Keep opining. Everyone's voice should be heard. That is how minorities become majorities. Through accumulation.

I in no way come on this site to be political which I don't believe I am.
Consider all the people murdered, killed, robbed and maimed by people that bypassed the legal way into America.
What about supporting, speak and support those people hurt by illegals yes there is another side.
One thing that may get lost and not spoken much of is the Democrats actually using illegals simply for their future votes, their being used for others gain.
Yes being used, it's sickening, it's abuse of others for personal political gain and power.
Wealthy Democrats using others to keep wealth and power.
There are paid professional protestors paid by people outside of America trying to destroy our country.
Taxes paid by all of us to support people to buy their votes and control everyone.
I'm 100% in support of those truly in need not to bring people in the country to buy votes to out vote the rest of the country, millions is millions let in for political gain of one political party not the rest of the people.

Illegals cannot register to vote and cannot vote in federal elections.
The law is clear. The right's claims are bogus.
There are places that allow non-citizens to vote only in LOCAL elections. That is because they live and work there.
Illegal aliens cannot register to vote, nor can they cast a vote. In some cases, they may get past the safeguards, but it is extremely rare.

Who cannot vote?
Non-citizens, including permanent legal residents, cannot vote in federal, state, and most local elections.
Some people cannot vote after being convicted of a felony or if they are currently serving time for other types of crimes. Rules are different in each state. Check this guide from vote.gov to understand the laws in your state.
Some people who have a mental disability may not be able to vote. Learn about your voting rights. Rules vary by state.
U.S. citizens residing in U.S. territories cannot vote for president in the general election.

No one's existence is illegal.
No one is less of a human being because of where they live or how they got there.
Some people are undocumented. Being undocumented is not a grave enough offense to justify extrajudicial murder. Nor even deportation without due process. Certainly not extrajudicial incarceration.
Stottie Girl, I greatly appreciate your perspective. Being 'outside' provides clarity. Danielle, I also value your perspective and make no judgment regarding it. Personally, though, I think many of those students who skipped school to gather together in support of their families, their community, their country, learned more by doing that than by sitting at a desk for a few more hours.

You have the conservative-funded editorial media talking points down. Most is misinformation, of course, but people who watch conservative news don't know this.

Look at the statistics. Illegal immigrants are responsible for a much lower violent crime rate than U.S. citizens. Yours is a conservative talking point, a lie designed to get (mostly) white people angry. Has that worked for you?

It gets spoken about a lot, by conservative-funded media. And it's untrue. What's sickening is wealthy conservatives misleading people in order to gain/keep control of the government and give each other tax breaks whilst destroying the middle class. Read some Robert Reich (worked for Reagan). Well, him and just about any other political historian. Don't watch editorial conservative-funded media, as they just feed you talking points that aren't true. Over and over. All day. Until you believe all of it. Heck, fools believe that windmills and solar energy are bad ideas and that oil is fine. Think about that.

Also untrue. There are millions and millions of protesters. They're not getting paid. They're angry. I know a lot of them. Show me one contract, one cancelled check, one email. Something real to back up this conservative media lie.

What Lori said. Illegal immigrants can't vote. Never have. Stop watching OANN and Newsmax.
I don't expect to open your eyes or change your mind. I don't expect you'll read my comments with any sort of objectivity, if at all. It's nearly impossible to deprogram magas. It makes me sad. I'm tired of trying, but I just had to vent here. trump will be gone soon and we'll begin to rebuild.
PS: read about Dwight D Eisenhower's presidency. Read about "the middle way." Read about what his policies did for the U.S. Conversely, read about Ronald Reagan's job at General Electric, which lead to his governorship and presidency. Read about what his policies did to the middle class. Read about Citizens United and what that did for rich and poor people. Read about the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act and what it did to the economy. Read anything that isn't someone else's option. Form your own opinions. See how that goes.
Know why college-educated people become more progressive? Because colleges turn them into liberals? No. It's because they study facts - history, science and so on. Learning about economics and politics and history teaches one what works for this country. People who didn't get a college education are really angry about this, partially because they're lower on information and they sometimes feel inferior. I *do not* have a college degree, but I've read and learned.
PPS: Venezuela! I might as well touch on that bombshell. Venezuela didn't have trouble because of *democratic socialism*. They are in trouble because rich greedy dictators ruin countries. Democratic socialism is BAKED INTO OUR system of governing and as has been for a really, really long time. It's kept us from going over the edge, a la ancient Rome. The widening wage gap we've been experiencing more every year since Reagan? That's the path to ruin. It's the opposite of Eisenhower. You know what hasn't been baked in to our system of government (until recently)? Fascism.

I agree with what you are saying, so allow me to clarify what I mean.
An illegal alien is someone who entered the country by other than legal means. They do not have a passport, visa, or work permit that grants them permission to be in the country. That is not the same as undocumented.
In today's society, I find it very difficult to find a reason that someone would not have documents of some kind.
My great-grandfather came across the border from Canada when he was 16 to help with grape harvests in Pennsylvania and New York. He had his immigration papers from England to Canada. But he had no documents showing permission to be in the U.S., but back then, none were required. He married the daughter of one of the farmers whom he worked for. That gave him employment history, a residence, and a marriage certificate showing he was married to a U.S. citizen.
His son, my grandfather, was born at home on a farm. No birth certificate. However, when he needed one (driver's license, social security, etc.), he had what is known as an Attestation of Live Birth. It is a sworn statement by witnesses who were there when he was born. Using that form, he obtained a birth certificate.
Other situations still involve school, church, and employment records. Anyone in a country, unless they are hiding, has some sort of document showing how long they have been there, what they were doing, and where.
I do realize that undocumented people exist who are not criminals. I only question why they are undocumented. It is not difficult to obtain a work permit or another document verifying one's legal presence. Passports and visas are a little different, as cost alone can be prohibitive.
So I do not equate undocumented with illegal. We have legal channels for people to immigrate without sneaking in. There are even organizations willing to help make that happen and can expedite cases involving an emergency (such as asylum).
I believe that every human has a right to defend their position in court before any action is taken against them, whether it is deportation, execution, or a removal order. The illegals that the Administration is supposed to be targeting are those who have had their day in court, and the court has issued a removal order for whatever reason. But when you impose a daily quota, grabbing anyone and everyone will suffice, hoping they nab enough of the bad ones to meet it.

See, I just can't keep my trap shut!!
A lot of you over there have uk ancestry. The UK really is a mongrel nation, we always have been, that makes you the decendents of a mongrel nation and your country was also founded by immigrants. We are nearly all immigrants if you go back far enough. UK has the same problems with unchecked migration.
The problem as I see it is the same, we are finding in the UK, the immigration has been unchecked and the numbers are far too high to integrate which is causing the formation of ghettos, next to no integration and resentment to build.
There is nothing wrong with controlled migration, in fact it can benefit a society it just needs to be managed and control has to be at the borders. Once people are here the rounding up, perscution, disapearing that is going on the states smacks of the 1930's with a certain moustashioed Austrian.
Getting control of the borders and naturalising those who are already here is the way forward IMO

When a census is done anyone is counted citizen or not. The total number is used to apply the number of representatives for each state.
Representatives control the House of Representatives. Illegals do count in elections.
The Democrats using open borders to let millions into the country was done to control local elections and federal House of Representatives numbers.
The Democrats don't give a flip about anyone but themselves the illegals are being used by them.
I live in Pennsylvania you do not show ID to vote. You do have to register to vote, someone can use your name to vote if it registered if you did not vote yourself this is why some want voter ID.
I registered to vote anyone can do a mail in ballot for me or actually go to my local voting point use my name and vote if I did not vote myself, simple as this.
May I add, I'm a registered Independent!

My parents have been Republican election judges for decades. When you show up at the poll to vote, they check your ID and your signature. For mail-in ballots, they check your signature. Either way, the signature must match what is on file from when you showed your ID and registered to vote.
If that is not what is happening there, then yes, that needs to change. Everywhere I have lived, ID and signature must match. If it doesn't match on a mailed-in ballot, it is discarded and doesn't count. There are many, many safeguards to ensure election security that the general public is not aware of (for obvious reasons).

In the UK we just used to register online or by sending in a form then they'd send out a polling card to the registered address which you had to take to the polling station though if you forgot it they just asked for your postcode (zipcode). It was a very relaxed system.
Recently though you need to bring photo id with you so they are getting stricter.

I'm not making this up, you do not have to show ID when voting in Pennsylvania.
You tell them your name they check to see if your registered for that voting location which your assigned to, you do not show any ID at all to vote, fact.
They give you a ballot, you vote.
Back to the subject.I personally do not support or did not strike on January 30th.
I support the families that have been affected by illegals not illegals that have caused harm to others.
Don't get not having outrage over those that lost lives, jobs and benefits do to illegals for political support of a future one party system.
I support the Laken Riley Act, I question why there wasn't a shut-down/strike over those murdered, raped or killed by illegals.
Supporting illegals that murdered, robbed or killed people doesn't make sense to me. Supporting with tax money to pay illegals to be in this country for future votes and or representation for one side isn't right to me.
Thank you
