Organizers are ready to hit the Trump administration where it hurts the most – in the wallet.

Activists are calling for a national general strike on Friday to protest Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity across the country, but particularly in Minnesota, where nearly 3,000 federal agents have been deployed as part of an aggressive crackdown on supposed fraud.

Organizers of the general strike are asking people to not go to work, not go to school, and not purchase anything on January 30. This creates both an economic blackout, and the opportunity to participate in local protests against ICE.

"The entire country is shocked and outraged at the brutal killings of Alex Pretti, Renee Good, Silverio Villegas González, and Keith Porter Jr. by federal agents," the National Shutdown website states. "While Trump and other right wing politicians are slandering them as 'terrorists,' the video evidence makes it clear beyond all doubt: they were gunned down in broad daylight simply for exercising their First Amendment right to protest mass deportation."

"Every day, ICE, Border Patrol and other enforcers of Trump's racist agenda are going into our communities to kidnap our neighbors and sow fear," it continues. "It is time for us to all stand up together in a nationwide shutdown and say enough is enough!"

The Denver Post reported today that dozens of businesses in Denver will be closed in support of the protest. Major cities across the country are mobilizing against this regime.

I am going to close my CPA business. I am at the point that I will be starting
to work 6 or 7 days a week until late April.

Explain to me how this hits the Trump Administration in the wallet?
Instead it immediately hurts small businesses, lower income families that
are now having a difficult time paying their bills....
...and encouraging our kids to not go to school?  Why take it out on our
children's education and their ability to learn in order for them to have a more
successful life?

I read a different article about this, and it said that the intent was to get everyone to stop what they are doing and get out in the streets and protest. I think it is more about numbers in attendance, which is visible, vs invisible tax dollars.

I remember doing taxes from January to May, working 18 hours a day. We even put in a full day on Easter Sunday. I know that's your payday, so stock up on coffee and chocolate.

That's precisely what people are protesting. They're protesting an administration built on hate, judgement, intolerance and systemic oppression. But mostly, they're trying to counter the extinction burst event that got it us here 17 years ago.

Striking and protesting is why we in the UK have better workers rights, more paid holiday, Universal healthcare, sick leave, maternity and paternity leave, equal opportunities, etc etc etc. Europe too. We weren't gifted these rights, we and those who came before us fought for them.

Americans really should consider going out on strike more often, your government is ran by corporations, who stamp all over you. Corporations only care about profit and strikes hurt their profits and can force them to effect change. It's sad to see from the outside. You all deserve better.

General strikes have brought down governments and get social change to the masses. Sometimes you have to take a hit if you want to better your lives and those of your children in the future.

Everyone's opinion matters.

We learn when we hear what others have to say. If everyone just butted out, we could assume that we are alone in what we are experiencing. When others chime in, who have no skin in the game, we realize that others see what we see. We are not imagining it.

Keep opining. Everyone's voice should be heard. That is how minorities become majorities. Through accumulation.

Stottie Girl, I greatly appreciate your perspective. Being 'outside' provides clarity. Danielle, I also value your perspective and make no judgment regarding it. Personally, though, I think many of those students who skipped school to gather together in support of their families, their community, their country, learned more by doing that than by sitting at a desk for a few more hours.

When a census is done anyone is counted citizen or not. The total number is used to apply the number of representatives for each state.
Representatives control the House of Representatives. Illegals do count in elections.


I live in Pennsylvania you do not show ID to vote. You do have to register to vote, someone can use your name to vote if it registered if you did not vote yourself this is why some want voter ID.

I registered to vote anyone can do a mail in ballot for me or actually go to my local voting point use my name and vote if I did not vote myself, simple as this.

My parents have been Republican election judges for decades. When you show up at the poll to vote, they check your ID and your signature. For mail-in ballots, they check your signature. Either way, the signature must match what is on file from when you showed your ID and registered to vote.

If that is not what is happening there, then yes, that needs to change. Everywhere I have lived, ID and signature must match. If it doesn't match on a mailed-in ballot, it is discarded and doesn't count. There are many, many safeguards to ensure election security that the general public is not aware of (for obvious reasons).

In the UK we just used to register online or by sending in a form then they'd send out a polling card to the registered address which you had to take to the polling station though if you forgot it they just asked for your postcode (zipcode). It was a very relaxed system.

Recently though you need to bring photo id with you so they are getting stricter.

I'm not making this up, you do not have to show ID when voting in Pennsylvania.
You tell them your name they check to see if your registered for that voting location which your assigned to, you do not show any ID at all to vote, fact.
They give you a ballot, you vote.

Back to the subject.I personally do not support or did not strike on January 30th.
