Title: A thread for emo, goth, scene, punk aka whatever they're calling "alternative"
Post by: insideontheoutside on January 21, 2011, 11:36:57 PM
So I've noticed there definitely are a few of us on there who, for lack of a better word (and general aversion to the hot-word-of-the-moment for people who tend to look a certain way) are "alternative". Hell even if you're into anime/manga or whatever it is that puts you outside what everyone else calls, "normal".

I just thought I'd start a thread where we can all gravitate to and can discuss things like what color you're dying your hair next, where's the best place to buy skinny jeans, how many piercings you have, what was the last band you saw live, etc. etc. etc.

The weird thing is; I saw them on my 17th birthday... in 2009.

More on topic: I'm getting my first tattoo pretty soon as a belated birthday present.  I'll post pics on this thread once I get it!

Funny thing is, I don't have any piercings (was never into them personally - like them on other people), and I've only contemplated one tattoo ever.

Hair dye though? That's a whole other story. I've had: pink, green, blue, red, orange, bleached and black :)

I'm mostly alternative by being geeky, genderqueer, and very, very far left politically. I'm kind of casually emo-goth.

However, I want deep red streaks in my hair. Or blue. Or green tips. I get my skinny jeans from a thrift store so they're nice and worn in, and in black or grey. I think eventually I'll get a small tattoo, probably on my shoulder. But.... I'm going into neuroscience at a hopefully competitive university, so I've definitely got to limit myself. Only thing stopping me from getting lip piercings.

No tattoos, and the only piercings are one set in my ear lobes...but I do love unnatural hair colors.  My hair's really too short right now, but once I'm on T, I plan to let it grow back out (heck, I may let it grow back out before then, but it's harder for me to pass).  I've had purple streaks put in it before and would love to try for some more colors.

What I wear every day is sort of boring (not many open-minded people where I live) but the styles I love are usually a mix of fantasy, punk, harajuku, clubwear (love the furry legwarmers/boots), and goth.  I was into blue nail polish way before it was cool and you had to really work to hunt down a bottle of it.  The green lipstick I had in high school was one of the very few items of makeup I owned.

Last band I saw live: Skinny Puppy. I can tell you, dancing in a tight binder kind of hurt. Still, it was an awesome concert.

Stuff I've done to my hair: Tangled it in childhood, bob dyed black from age 13-15, now it's some kind of... I dunno. Short male haircut, I guess? Not dyed, my natural hair colour.

Amount of piercings: NONE! Hehe. My mum's allergic to nickel, and I'm pretty scared about getting it myself (she has bleeding wounds on her face due to her allergy).

Skinnyjeans: Nahhh, baggy cargo pants all the way!

The best footwear is big, stompy boots. Mine are Underground boots, made in the UK, with steel toes. They're heavy but look and feel great! Kind of scuffed, though, due to me being clumsy.

My style is... casual. Band tees in black, cargo pants, boots, black longcoat. That's it.

and I'm going to see David J of Bauhaus next month :D

I don't have any piercings or tattoos but I dye my hair jet black and wear black skinny jeans.

I have a labret piercing and stretched lobes (9mm), my lobes were 1/2" but I was curious to see how much they would shrink if I took them out but got bored after 3 days. I hope to get my septum scalpelled soon, did want it dermal punched but the guy i'm going to would prefer to scalpel it and I trust him 100%.

Before coming out I used to dye my hair red but I can't be bothered anymore, I will dread my hair soon though it just needs to be a bit longer.

I'm a baggy jeans, band t shirt and boots kind person.

I wonder why I see more "alternative" ftms then mtfs  ???

David J has a solo career? I was not aware! All I know of is that Daniel Ash released a solo record, and Tones on Tail existed (crap name, pretty cool music, am recommending Movement of Fear, Slender Fungus, and Go! by them), and of course Love and Rockets (Yin, Yang and the Flowerpot Man is a cool song by them, Haunted when the minutes drag as well).

Reptile - Trent Reznor, Jeordie White, Peter Murphy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Elbsomblod4#ws)
Peter Murphy and Trent Reznor, Murphy sings Reptile by NIN. In the end, he also sings Haunted. Probably the only time ever Murphy will sing a Love and Rockets song.

Never been to a concert but my hair has been every color of the rainbow and then some (but not yet every color of the rainbow at once which would be awesome)

I usually stick with an 8/10 gauge ring in one ear when I don't have a job but I can't do that anymore. And I'm not a big skinny jeans fan but I love my Tripp pants and band shirts (Linkin Park, Eminem)

Another Bauhaus fan! Hi PixieBoy  :)
I think he has a few solo albums. I'm not quite familiar with his solo stuff but am consider myself a big fan of Bauhaus (and Tones on Tail, too). I saw them live about 6 times, plus one Love and Rockets show and a Peter Murphy show.

Love the radio session! Their cover version of Night Clubbing, Warm Leatherette are my fav.

Ooooh, can I join in, can I? Please?

I is definitely alternative, i have my lip pierced, have a scaffold in my right, 5mm flesh tunnel in my left plus my tragius and a couple of others. I don't currently dye my hair but i used to dye it post box red all the time and i had a succession of wild hair styles, including a 5" dread mohawk. I'm really contemplating dreading my hair again, my friend has dreads and she looks amazing, plus I'm a lazy cow and hate having to straighten it in the mornings. Currently i have two tattoos...a dragon between my shoulders and two space invaders on my left fore arm. I want more though...lots more. I really want some stars, despite the fact they are so damn cliched these days so i'm trying to find a way to make them unique and i'm going to have Death of the Endless tattooed on my back, because i love her and secretly want to be her

Style wise, hard to pin down, i'm really getting into my diy stuff at the moment, i have a ton of boy t-shirts i'm going to turn into dresses and stuff like that. If i really wanted to label my self it's probably quirky emo-geek with a touch of pagan goddess  but that's pretentious as hell so i probably wouldn't

Dreadlocks on a female.  That is genius.  Why didn't I think of that?

Maybe if my hair grows out long enough, I can try it.

Quotei have a ton of boy t-shirts i'm going to turn into dresses and stuff like that.

I love boy shirts.  But how exactly do you turn them into dresses?

I have boy shirts that I'm hoping I'll be able to use as is after transition.  I'm not much for tailoring, so I hope I don't have to modify them.

Now I feel like a complete geek.  I'm talking about wanting to transition to female so I can wear boy shirts.  But seriously, I've always been so tiny that shopping in the men's section is virtually impossible.

I never really liked labels but I just prefer being comfortable in whatever I wear. But it's usually dark clothes, usually cargo pants with a tee.

Best band I saw live, well I've only ever seen two and it's a hard choice so I'll say both. Marilyn Manson and My Chemical Romance. I wanna see Linkin Park so bad though.

Hair style, just short. Lol. I'm not too fussed. When I was younger my Dad gave me a mullet :P I used to dye my hair alot. It's been blonde, red, purple, black, ashy, and blueberry. I just prefer my natural hair color now, yeah its boring but meh.

I used to have my bridge pierced and my eyebrow. I plan on getting my right eyebrow pierced again coz I miss it. I've always loved stretched lobes and would love to do it one day. I definataly want to get tatts in the future when I can afford them (have top surgery to save up for).

I'll post pictures once i've done the alterations to the one i've just made. There are a few ways you can do it, the one i've just finished was made by sewing my old t-shirt hem to hem with a girls t-shirt in the right size. I then just corseted the back to give it shape and cut the sleeves and neck line. I need to add a strap though because it's currently so off the shoulder it doesn't cover my boobs...easy to do though. Other ways, just cut a print you like off an old t-shirt and sew it onto a basic dress. you can also turn t-shirts into halter necks quite easily with just a pay of scissors and a touch of hand sewing.

I'm lucky, I like sewing and i'm good with a sewing machine, but even if your just okay, putting the print from an old t-shirt onto a dress is really easy.

Shopboy, you absolute bastard, how lucky are you?!? You got to see Bauhaus live! I wish I was older, so I'd have had the ability to see all my favourite bands live...

Also, Helen, Death of the Endless is so cute and sweet. I wish she was real. However, I'd rather like to look like Morpheus, he's a carbon copy of Peter Murphy, with Robert Smith's hair. Death is more like a cute Siouxsie Sioux. Delirium is also really cool.

o.o I can't remember who I saw last...so...my first concert was Poison, Winger, Cinderella, and Faster Pussycat.  I was 12 or so. xD  My second concert was Ozzfest featuring Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, and Korn.  The best band I have ever seen was Pretty Boy Floyd, though.  (And I've seen at least 200 different bands live, and some more than once.)

I have one tattoo, but have about 12 others planned.  Most are "girly", but I don't care.  They're all going to be in places that can be hidden, though, so I can get a job teaching.  I don't have my ears pierced or any of other piercing--I seem to be allergic to all ring types. xD  Ummm....I've dyed my hair:  red, pink (on accident), blue, green, orange, purple, and purple-black.  I'm about to go back to purple-black once I can 'cause I liked that color on me.  And I want to see what it looks like with short hair.

I don't wear skinny jeans because my hips are a bit too big and I'm a bit too tall to carry them well...and I like my jeans to be loose and comfortable.  Or I wear leggings.  I love leggings since discovering them in England. XD  They're so comfortable!  And totally not any sort of "scene" clothing....but I normally wear jeans and some sort of t-shirt.

First off Insideontheoutside I'm thrilled to see you smile.  *throw party!*

I wish I had more money to spend on concerts and that but all my money goes to clothes.  I certainly live an alternative BDSM lifestyle which I talked about more in my blog on here.  (disappointing some people I fear)

Yesterday I bought an incredible full length leather coat from Pelle.  This is when my goth side goes out which is still under the surface even though I mostly go preppy in the way I dress.  I am planning on wearing the coat to a Live Action Role Playing (LARP) today called Vampire the Requiem which is from the New World of Darkness rpg series.  My vampire's name is Dmitry.  He is a Daeva and follows the Circle of the Crone.  I'll post pictures if I get any good ones.  Yes we do run around and hiss and bite at each other.  It's fun!

I'm so glad I found this thread! I am totally emo/scene and I love the look. Right now I have black fingernail polish on and my hair is done in a scene/emo kind of way. I wear skinny jeans and retro hoodies/t-shirts. I got the glam rock kind of look going on. I love it. I want to get some black stud earings to put in my ears. I love those things. My hair is dyed black right now and I am thinking about adding some bright red streaks to it. Or some other crazy color.

Oh, I also wear guyliner, I love that stuff.

I know some books you might like, they're all about altering t-shirts into some really awesome diy clothes.  Generation T (one of my favorites), Tease, and 99 Ways to Cut, Sew, Trim, and Tie Your T-Shirt into Something Special.  One of my favorite shirts came from an idea in Generation T...the back of it is cut to look like a rib cage.  It's in bright pink though, so I feel a little uncomfortable wearing it now.

I love armwarmers.  I designed and made a pair out of a couple of old t-shirts.  You can see my girly-looking hands in the pic though.  :embarrassed:  The armwarmers probably don't help with that (I wonder if any guys wear armwarmers?)  I don't wear them much because nobody around here does, alternative fashion is not popular at all where I live.

The link leads to some excellent inspiration pics, as well as nostalgia. Those of you who loathe the 80's, don't click the link.
I made my mum very sentimental with showing her that site, she said it reminded her of her youth.

I love the idea of making new clothes out of old clothes, but I'm absolute crap at sewing. I really wish I was good at it, I have a friend who makes her own clothes and she always looks good in them.

Sup.

I've had every style of hair. Dreads, to mohawks. Every color of the rainbow. Here's me with a mohawk.

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn3.dailybooth.com%2F0%2Fpictures%2Flarge%2F9d287b31a1e13be9deb6a6cdf21da75d_9635230.jpg&hash=869ff7746b21a2e63de549f4fbcf02c6a513fa47)

My hair grew out sightly so I cut off the mohawk, so now it's just boring regular hair. My eyebrows grew out too. Thinking about dying my hair light pink. Let's face it, I'm not going to pass until T anyway, so I might as well do whatever I want.

I have my septum, labret, and ears pierced. My ears are 29mm or 1 1/8". I retired my snakebites, bellybutton, nipples, and nostril. I'm thinking about getting double nostrils though.

I want full length sleeve tats in the future after top surgery that is. Tats are hella expensive. It'll probably be a geisha/zombie theme. I want to get EVIL DEAD on my knuckles haha.

I'm into manga/anime.

I'm into all genres of music, except country music. My favorite is industrial, then black metal. I've been listening to a lot of pop music recently >.> I can't help it, I like to whip my hair back and forth yanno.

Lately, I've been super lazy and just throwing on skinny jeans and a t shirt. I do have a kodona/ouiji wardrobe though, that I never get to wear.

My parents were goths or similar back in the day. So they got to see Bauhaus and Velvet Underground live, and such things. My mum used to have a buzz cut when she was younger, and father still has his weed-smelling, tie-dyed shirt he got from a festival.

I was brought up with the mindset of "Weird is good!" and "No knowledge is useless". So yeah, my parents are gothy nerds. My mum is currently sewing a corset while listening to Joy Division. I think this says quite a lot about my family, really.

Awesome blog, Shayne. You've got good taste.

Does anyone here like old-school punk? I'm okay with some modern stuff like Green Day and MCR, but they aren't even punk anymore. Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Ramones, I like that sort of thing. Though my ipod is very, very eclectic.

First of all: For those who are seeking new awesomeness....go to youtube and type 'Dead Letter Circus'. Seriously. CHECK THEM.

And, for me, since I can't understand very well the western culture, I have to say...
My latest concert.... GACKT. And the best...I know you guys really get blind at him, if you just listen to the voice... you will notice there is really very little people who can sing better than him. His pitch, vibrato, range...is perfect. He's a f** robot...I could see him from 1 meter distance and I could see how he controlled his breath even with the dance.

The best concert...till I have the chance of watch Buck-Tick on concert, of course.

Gackt is good, but I prefer him with Malice Mizer.  I also absolutely love Miyavi...followed by Dir en Grey and Girugamesh. >>  Specifically Miyavi.  Who I'm hoping to see one day in person.

i'm a rivethead at heart, but i don't really dress teh part. latest concert? combichrist! i love them. i've also seen vnv nation, assemblage 23, and one, and a bunch of other awesome bands.

i've always wanted pink hair (at least since getting into j-rock several years ago) but have never had the chance to do it. have a labret and 00g lobes, and a crtilage piercing. i plan to go up on my lobes and i want more piercings but dunno if i'll get them. i have one teeeny tattoo that i did myself, a nautical star on my ankle. i DEFINITELY want more of those xD

what do you all think about themed tattoos? like....if you have more than one, having a certain theme so they all relate somewhat, even if it's just their style. necessary or no?

I liked themed tattoos, but I'm not doing that except for when I do my family's astrology signs.  Though dragons are going to continue to be a theme of mine. XD  >> I have one dragon tattoo right now and I'm going to get more soon-ish.

j-rock = some seriously cool styles.

I've seriously thought of getting a tattoo before but the thought of the ink under my skin...it'd drive my OCD crazy and I'd end up picking at it trying to get it out.  So I'll have to stick with non-permanent body art.  If I did get a tatt, it'd probably be an MLP (see avatar for example).

The box set for the new MCR album has an E.P. (Mad Gear And Missile Kid - which is really just them) with some very punky stuff on it. There's only 3 tracks though which is the bummer part. They should have done more on that. I'm pretty sure the mp3s are floating around on the open web though. The Misfits were a huge influence to those guys.

It's fun!

Ahh! I also LARP in a WOD game! I'm a Mage though, so don't you vampires screw up any of well thought out plans!

(Unfortunately, I made the character before I was out so I have to wear a dress at game.  Ah well, it's still fun! Fortunately my characer is kind of a neo-hippie so I can get away with body hair :P)

Thought it might be worth replying to this post.

I have 00g ear lobes and dreads a few inches past my shoulders. Some of my locks are also dyed with cool colors too(blue, green, purple)!  I'm gonna miss my locks when I start to transition, I can't pass with them.

I listen to ska (Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish, The Toasters) and old school punk (old AFI, The Ramones, Minor Threat).  The last show I saw was Streetlight Manifesto and Reel Big Fish (it was my 6th time seeing Streetlight Manifesto!).

I'm not into skinny jeans or any tight clothes for that matter, I actually dress kind of out-doorsy I guess.

Other metal bands that aren't black metal that I like are, Sepultura, Slayer, Soulfly, Pantera, Hatebreed, Cannibal Corpse.

When I was in really young I was a computer geek who had a love for anime stuff. I moved to a bigger city when I was 10 and didn't like anyone hahah I taught myself how to make websites and graphics to keep myself busy.

Then later at one point I dyed my hair black and had my lip pierced? and dressed all black and whatever...

Now my girlfriend makes fun me because she thinks I look very 'gangster' while I listen to emo/screamo type music. Yet... I'm still geeky computer nerd with an embarrassing large Pokemon collection. Hahah =( I'm just a mix of strange things.

I just realized I've never had my hair purple before. Might have to fix that...

I'm seeing them in April too.  Hope they do a little tour soon as the Mad Gear and Missile Kid. Haven't seen them in small clubs and I'm pretty stoked for this one.

Purple hair sounds awesome. It'll go well with the new album concept :)

Wish my parents were super cool like yours. Mine are just typical catholic parents not that I don't love them.
The year I saw bauhaus was 2005 and 2006. They did shows in small venues then the next summer with NIN. I've never seen them in their heydays as I'm still in my 20's.

I've been pretty interested in body mods lately.  Have a couple of potential tattoos designed, and I'm thinking about a septum piercing.  My mom says it wouldn't suit my face since my nose is kind of upturned, but maaan it's what I want.

Skinny jeans, though... I can't get behind that.  They show off exactly what I don't want to show off.  Give me my parachute pants.

ah those funny labels. I never really labeled myself, but other people have. I got called emo/scene when my hair was longer but I think I'm more of a mutt.

I have snake bites, but I alternate wearing 1 2 or none, I do want my eyebrow pierced tho, and I was thinking of working on gauges again.
I have 2 tattoos now, just got one yesterday with my best friend as her birthday present, so now I have 2 on my forearm working on a sleeve.
I wear anything that I think I can pull off, which is a wide variety. I used to wear alot of skinny jeans, but moved on to more slim straightleg fitted jeans. And of course I have my collection of band t's and v necks.
Music...METAL (well I love all kinda of music but i love tearing sh*t up with my metal) Bring Me The Horizon, Suicide Silence, Emmure, Parkway Drive..just to name a few, which I was lucky enough to get to see all of them at Warped Tour last summer and definitely hit up the mosh pits! I'm also into Indie alot tho, Bright Eyes or Connor Oberst in general, Jack Johnson, Kimya Dawson, DeathCab

cool thread

I wanna join the party!

Let's see what kind of crazy stuff I've done to my body... My hair has been all sorts of colors but I usually keep it in black now. I've got snake bites, my tongue pierced, like four piercings in each ear with the lobes stretched to 0g, and my industrial done. I used to have my eyebrow pierced but I took it out cause it wasn't healing right. Tattoos... I've got a nautical star on each wrist and a dragon that takes up most of my left forearm. Still need to get it colored and I'm eventually making it into a sleeve whenever I have money.

This is my arm right after it was done.

I know what you mean. Seems "alternative" means drawing attention to yourself in some cases and a lot of guys I'm sure are content to just wear cargo pants and tshirts and fit in with all the other "normal" guys.

I know, I know, all you metalbros will probably bite my head off for linking to that song. The song is, to me, the soundtrack of summer, of dipping feet into water, of taking off your shoes and walking barefoot in the grass, of lying on the jetty, listening to the waves...

I guess my "look" is "casual goth". Longcoat, big boots, black clothes, band tees. I'm too lazy/fashion-idiot to do anything cool to my hair. I would love to be able to pull off the Clockwork Orange droogie fashion, as I think it looks super cool (and I know a bit of Russian, so I could govoreet the nadsat pretty horrorshow, O my brothers).

I know what you mean.  I don't enjoy drawing attention to myself for the most part, but I do like having a style.  That was one of the reasons I thought I couldn't possibly be ftm for a while.  Usually, I just wear skinny jeans, combat boots, and old t-shirts.  I used to have a bunch of piercings, but I had to take them out for work.  I love weird hair colors, but I haven't dyed my hair lately because I'm too lazy to keep up with it.  Otherwise I'd have blue hair with black streaks.

Some people who know I'm FTM give me questioned look because I don't fit in super short hair- cargo pants- macho acting transguy type thing. Its like "Are you really ftm? I don't see it". Once I got rejected from a doc because of that I guess. He called me 'sweetie' at the end of exam told me to come back a year later which I didn't. I do feel pressure to get my hair cut and stop wearing makeup to 'prove' that I am a guy to these people, but I'm gay and artist ;D

I'm an absolutely huge Haujobb fan, I also like artists like Stendeck, Empusae, Flint Glass and other dark ambient/ambient industrial acts. I also really love This Morn' Omina. Heard of all those acts, but after i got into industrial I started rapidly leaning towards the more ambient stuff. I'm also partial to a bit of Combichrist, Covenant and Velvet Acid Christ when i'm in the mood.

Where do you guys and girls discover music? What I listen hasn't changed so long and I want to explore. I listen to New order, Smashing Pumpkins, Bjork, Bauhaus, My Chem, Pet Shop Boys, Pulp, Blur, Suede, The Smiths etc.
Any suggestions? If any of you have a list that'd be greatly appreciated. Could be a good trans or ambient radio station or list of your fav bands  :)

Often I rely on my friends to point me to some new music.

I really liked the last Weezer album. The last Madina Lake album wasn't bad. A friend gave me the New Politics album and that's ok - totally different style of rock but it grew on me. Another friend told me about Sleigh Bells - nice you if like noisy alternative stuff. Muse is always a good choice. I have all their albums and finally saw them live last year. Jet is ok ... I have a couple of their albums.

Most everything else rock-wise I listen to is much harder than 80's/90's and Brit Pop stuff you listed. I like a lot of black and death metal :)

I guess I'm pretty alternative in my own right- most of my clothes are black on top of other things. I wear a ton of dramatic jewelry as well as costumes when I'm in the mood too, I have at least three different neon-coloured hair extensions, and I listen to a lot of foreign and fan-created (Vocaloids and Utauloids, mainly) music alongside stuff like My Chemical Romance and Slipknot. Thank you, art class, for getting me caught up in this stuff.  :P

Plus, I have gotten comments about my writing before since I spell some words in a different way than everyone around me does- not sure if that counts as alternative, though. ^^::

Also- I have a semi-crush on David Bowie.

I get that mostly from my family, but it tappers off once you've been on T a few months. Now I'm just that "gay goth kid" who "is and artist." Rather then  people trying to figure out what I am. It just tskes time. And I wear enough eyeliner for everybody.

insideontheoutside - Thanks for the list and brief reviews.  What you've suggested here are mostly very new to me. I'll definitely take a time and listen all of them. They're all sound amazing. Muse is really good. I'm getting two or three of their albums ;)

I do own some old heavy metal records. They aren't death/ black metal though :P

Pixieboy - I have all of L&R, Joy Division albums. I used to collect almost every record related to the bands I like, so I didn't list them. Portishead and the Velvet.. they're those I listen once in a while. Faith, Robert..  they're bit different but I'll give them a try or two. PJ Harvey. I'd  been passed her music but just tried few songs and sounds good to me. Thanks  :) I guess we have similar taste in music  ;)

It got lessen after I started T and top surgery done. They don't question me in my face anymore but Im sure some does behind me. I don't carry myself like a princess or something but if I don't act all macho and rough... people seem confused. Well more time on T might fix that.

I mostly go to small local shows of cust/grincore. sometimes hardcore, but not the hardcore like you associate with emo kids. also sometimes some folk punk.

in fact the last big bands I saw was styx/reo speedwagon. which btw was epic haha

but my musical tastes as far as things you can look up go along bands like

fall of efrafa
magrudergrind
rosa

even though lately Ive been on a pretty big flight of the conchords/paramore binge.

Where do you guys and girls discover music?

Read anything about music you can get your hands on.  When you read about something that sounds interesting, look it up online, and if you like it, buy the record.  Listen to Internet radio shows and make a list of the stuff you like.  Get out and go to local shows.  Check the listings, look the bands up online, and go see the ones that appeal to you.  You won't acquire good taste by relying on other people.  You have to make the effort to find out about stuff on your own.

I find new music from magazines (metal hammer etc) and online (last.fm etc).

My music taste has changed a lot over the years, I used to listen to stuff like my chemical romance :-X but gradually as I was finding new music my tastes got heavier. I still like some of what I used to listen to but most of it I don't like anymore.

I dig around last.fm. If you use Chrome browser and get the last.fm free music player plug in, you can listen to the artists' full tracks. It's pretty sweet.

I also poke around torrent sites. If I find stuff I like I'll buy the CD.

Thank you all for terrific advices. I'm literally taking notes. My usual route to discover music is by looking up the influences of my favorite bands. This works good but I was hoping to find other ways.

Do you mind if I throw another question? What are your fav films?  I'm curious  :)

partypoison: If you haven't checked it out already, Pandora is amazing. I've found more music by using it than any other way. Absolutepunk.com has music reviews and free music Fridays, so you can discover some bands nobody has heard of before. I've found some good stuff that way - don't know if you'd be interested in any of them, but I found Spring Offensive, Endless Hallway, and Silver Liners through their free releases.

As for movies - I'm boring. I like James Bonds and the like, mostly. Harry Potter. Rocky Horror Picture Show. Stuff by Tim Burton. I'm definitely not a film geek.

I saw some people on here say they like Bauhaus and Skinny Puppy. Any Cocteau Twins fans here by any chance?  :)

I'm "alternative" in the fact I dress like a Nirvana fan in 1993.

My other half has a bunch of Cocteau stuff. It's dreamy. I always loved their album cover art too.

I prefer Cranes to Cocteau Twins, actually. Have been getting into dreampop lately, and will also recommend the cool band Candy Claws (cheerful summer pop psychedelica).

Cranes - Leaves of Summer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tyu1erInGuk#)
Some Cranes, for your enjoyment.

Also, I am somewhat partial to the riotgrrl genre, which makes me feel like a jerk (some riotgrrl musicians are pretty transphobic, in that "womyn-born womyn are the real womyn; trans men are THE OPRESSION" kinda way). Hole's album Pretty on the inside is neat, though. Courtney herself gargled with whiskey to get the right punk sound for that album.
