I show mine. I'm not always happy about it, but it is presented in an attempt to be honest, open, and trusting towards the other board members. I feel really androgynous - a fact that I'm having a conflict with presently. Androgyny is fun, and I can make an attractive young woman. But I'm frightened by the fact that I can be an attractive young guy, too.
Perhaps it is the same with the others. Wearing an avatar usually requires some self-esteem, and to someone that hates their appearance from the core of their soul, putting a picture of oneself to their profile would be difficult to do. It's like how I was with my voice... when I had to use my male voice, I despised talking, and cringed every time I was made to. I have since put an end to this, but I will never forget how that felt.
... I don't believe that I needed to say any of that, but it feels good to say.
When I am ready, I still suffer from bad drag queen syndrome when using the make ups.
Also, paranoia, I'd probably do it if the picture threads were in the private area since I'm always popping pics up in some IRCs I frequent.

You mean like boy pics? I would post childhood stuff if anyone wanted me to (even though I would've once burned them all if not for my mom), but I think I'm so vain/neurotic that I wouldn't post a current pic 'cause I'm not satisfied yet. :P ~I'm pretty warped mentally/emotionally in a variety of ways; one example: I am an insane perfectionist. Showing your face on a transgender forum is really not a smart thing to do if you don't want to be out, especially with developments like tineye.com, pictriev.com, etc. Face recognition software is getting better by the day, and it could easily get you outed.
And like Rukia87xo says, we've got nothing to prove. Everyday I step out of that door and enter a world full of people to get all the validation that I want (and sometimes not ;-). So I really don't need a transgender forum for that.
Also, it's well known that some of the visitors of forums like these are stalkers and ->-bleeped-<-s. One more reason to protect your privacy.

A lot of people are going to be extremely sensitive about how they look.... it is just how our community goes. Those before transition or even during it are often trapped in a sittuation where they dislike how they look (which is, well, why we do the entire transition thing). After transition you will probably find more people who have found at least some amount of happyness with how they look (even if it is just because they can look back and see they have moved away from what they disliked before).
I was extremely sensitive about how I looked before (and still am in certain instances). But lately I have been getting more people confused and thinking I am female online... which is a ton of fun. Even if I still look male, I think I have moved far enough away from where I was before that I can relax a bit and just play around with messing with people :P Also, I have been getting some really positive feedback from those around me and recently started dating... which definitely helps boost confidence.
So, basically, it all just depends where people are in their transition and feelings towards how they look. Being uncomfortable with how we look at one point or another is something all of us go through.
And, of course, some are kind of paranoid of being "outted" ((for those in stealth, even visiting forums like these is probably causing some amount of anxiety).

Why I don't post a picture? I am not looking to be commented on by people I don't know. Besides, I am not out and I work in a job where I deal with a load of tech savey teenagers who would only be too happy to spread some gossip. I don't think my bosses would be too happy...Finally, I know I don't look pretty and I feel inadequate compared to the rest of ye.

I ussed to use my own pic as an avatar but that got boring.
I make it a point not to show my real life on the Internet as much as possible. There are only a few situations where I use anything like my real name or an image of myself and thats only on trusted private websites where I know the people who use those sites will respect privacy. I also do not crosslink user accounts for different groups (except for rare occasions). Here I am LivingInGrey, other general internet uses I use a different username.
I've even turned down jobs or quit jobs because those people wanted to put my image on their websites.
It's just the way I am.

Actually the two members who smite me more than anything are faceless. 90% of the smites come from two members and nothing more.

You've been fairly confrontational recently, perhaps you should consider that everyone is different.
I've actually had pictures up here before. And I have tons on my Facebook account, but as Tekla said I like the avatar as an avatar. That picture is a symbolic representation of me and I don't have to worry about whether it passes or not and am not subject to critiques from people I don't know.
Even after my FFS I will likely keep my avatar the same, but there will definitely be a thread full of pictures of my throughout my recovery.

Just also realized that not only do I have pictures on here in a couple of threads, I actually have a link to our family farm website on my profile. See that little globe there under my avatar, you can find all kinds of pictures there.. Sure they aren't glamour shots. They are just shots of our day to day life, but that is so much more real than a staged perfectly posed and perfectly makeup for a picture.

I personally do care if I pass but I don't count it as a priority. I have transitioned where I live, I have children, I have had freinds, relatives, childrens freinds and teachers and........ I could pass 110% but to these people that knew me or knew who I was, I can be trans at the best and I'm sure they'll still see him!!
Or some will even think I'm a DQ or CD!!! nothing I can do about it but it doesn't help that some people on a forum such as this think of me as this also.
I have to appreciate the times I can be accepted as just another plain Jane woman.

As much as I disagree with most of Masha's views you seem to be baiting for drama here just for the sake of it. If you disagree with something someone says you should respond to the thread they posted it in giving critical, constructive reply which can be continued as a normal conversation, sure you'll never agree but it's better than this pointless drama baiting in other threads. :-\
Everyone has their owns reason as to why they won't show their face. Not sure why people bother to get aggressive to others about it. As for why I don't post my picture is because I hate getting my picture taken, even by myself. I do have a few pictures on facebook and mixi. Pictures don't really mean too much to me either for the most part. How you present yourself is more important when your out and about. If you really want to see how others look like, maybe you can ask nicely. If they say no just respect their wishes and be on your merry way.
I tend to take the pix, as a result, there are not all that many of me, but I had to pose for this one. I was setting up the exhibit and speaking venue at the Jumping Frog site in Calaveras up in the foothills. That's Phil's first Alembic bass (in stereo), and behind me is the original stage banner from Mountain Aire in 87. I don't look like much of anything. This is day 3 or 4 of 8, it had rained twice, been broiling hot, and I'm sleeping in a 4-H barn - when we actually went to sleep, which was rare. At any rate, one of the stickers is of course the red/white/blue skull with the 13 pointed lighting bolt one of the best known rock logos (otherwise known as 'skull->-bleeped-<-,' or a 'stealie' in polite company (after 'Steal Your Face'). The other sticker is from Apollo 8.

I have been stealth for almost 2 years now and I have my face as my avatar and I have never been outed by anyone yet. Now, I am not saying it's impossible to be outed my placing a pic of yourself here; but from my experience it has never happened. And if it does happen, I could care less. I am who I am.
Also, if someone says "I saw your pic on a trans site...omg you're trans!" Then I would reply, what were you doing on a trans site.

I got asked by some gay men why I was on A4A once...then I explained my past and they were like, "You're a girl. It's a site for gay men." I was using the site with my old photos and showing up to the "date" as a girl. I revived my account twice in my transition, namely for IRL prankin.

As a sign of good faith, show your face. Especially if you are opinionated or argumentative. It's not illegal to be transgender. So there is zero excuse.

Fionabell, there is no requirement in the TOS to post an actual likeness of yourself. How do we know the avatar pic is actually you? Yes, it is the Internet and not everyone tells the truth. If you personally don't want to respond to someone that doesn't post a picture of themselves, that's your call, but not to dictate to anyone else here on Susan's.
There are different reasons why people don't post a avatar picture of themselves...stealth, working on their appearance, not ready, etc.
Please respect that. Me...I'm not ready to post my pic yet, one day I will, when I'm ready.
i never noticed this until now, but the girl in your avatar pic....i have that same exact skirt. Bought it on clearence for 14 dollars at hot topic. The front is a purple pleat and the sides are pleated but the back is just a basic black aline skirt. Fun skirt but never really cared for the front half pleated and the back half straight.

I learned about 3 yrs after finishing transitioning beauty is from within.. some of you know this already and haven't even started transitioning. You are Blessed for your insight and have that natural beauty within that can't be bought for no amount of $$$

They weren't, they were on an image search engine that uses face recognition to find matching images. I know the technology isn't very good yet, but it will get better.
And if Fionabell only wants to talk to people that show their face, then I suppose I have to go looking for some random pictures from the internet to use as an avatar. I have actually already seen this on other forums where people posted images of themselves that later turned out to be not really them.

I don't mind as pic shows me slim and fashionable dressed while the picciecollector is potbellied CD slob...he probly has a magic mirror.

Some of us cannot afford to be outed in a facial recognition search. Imagine working around dozens of physically aggressive types who are already known to be transphobic and one of them decides to do a search on your face just to see if anything "amusing" turns up (which has happened)...and they find your before/after photos on Susan's! :o
When I can get a better (more normal) job than my current one, (or when my little home business becomes self-supporting and can pay me a salary) I'll *consider* posting my face. Not until then. That's also why I tend to be vague or evasive on here about certain aspects of my personal life.
Besides, how can you really be sure that the real photos on here actually belong to the person who posts them?
I've seen someone who uses Jennifer Aniston as an avatar, but I somehow suspect that person isn't really her.

And if Fionabell only wants to talk to people that show their face, then I suppose I have to go looking for some random pictures from the internet to use as an avatar. I have actually already seen this on other forums where people posted images of themselves that later turned out to be not really them.

For the last 4. 1 / 2 years my pics have been shown world wide. I 'v been in front of over 3 Millon people & talked to 100's of people in groups as well. T V, papers & the net. not including the 1000's of others who see me . so i have no probs at all
When your too well known where do you hide, plus being on over 60 forums. same name & pic or avatar .
& my earlyer photos of my self are not very different form how you see my pic or if you talked with me in the street , what you see & is who i am.
Now remember not all of us can do what i have done or been where i go. so there is a difference. haveing a high profile is something for those of us who can do that, & not every one can or will.
