Title: Short hair and being an MtF
Post by: Mahsa Tezani on December 23, 2011, 02:38:20 PM
I love my long hair. It took me 3 years to grow it and I think it looks classically feminine. But I have an intense admiration for the latest round of short hairstyle...pixie cuts, assymetrical cuts, etc. I passed as female with short hair, so it's no surprise I am considering going short again.

So how many of you have short hair and do you think it makes transgirl "andro" or what?

I have been growing my hair from a total shave for 1.5 years now, and it is down to my chin, all in crazy curls. I love it but want to grow it even longer.

You should try to aim to grow your hair out to waist length first then donate it to Locks of Love.

I would love a shortish feminine style but with my current position in transition I probably couldn't pull it off, hopefully a few years down the line and I'll be good to go with short styles.

It depends on the face if it'll looks androgynous, I've only seen one transgirl with proper short hair whom passed quite well. But then she's the only person I can think of with it short, so meh.

Jealous of women with small ass faces.

I can't pass(not in person) with short hair.
It bothers me a lot since I love short hair on women.

As an owner of an asymmetrical pixie, I can vouch for its general awesomeness.

I think it gives people a non-feminine quality which I find really sexy. :]

Any Mtf who has a short hair cut is detracting from their ability to pass. I believe you might be an exception. Did you have low testosterone levels when you were male?

I haven't started hrt yet. I went to get a blood test. The doctor told me I have the normal male hormones.

The doctor would have been monitoring your hormone levels while you were transitioning silly!

Maybe after ffs I'll be able to pull off short hair. But even if I could, I wouldn't cut my hair short. That's not really my style. It looks good on you though.

I will probably get my body in shape before I do the "do". My frame went a little thick the past 2 months and need to get back into shape. Boyfriend hates it already though...

I believe there is nothing wrong with an MTF with short hair. If I were to accidentally have my hair cut short but I wanted it long, I would wear a wig. :)

I think short hair, if done right, can make a woman look great. Not only that but the confidence boost it can give a woman who can pull it off is tremendous. I've seen some very pretty women with short hair, although they were biological female. I'm sure a transgirl could pull off short hair too they will just need to play around with the different hair styles and find one that is suited to them. In my personal opinion any female that decides to cut off their hair and still has that confidence is extremely sexy. Shows she is not afraid of trying different things and is comfortable with herself.

On that note, I'm a biological female and I had my hair cut off to about jaw length last winter. I also had it layered but the point is people liked it. I let it grow out then shaved it off into a faux hawk before thanksgiving. Donated to locks of love.  :)

Anyway point is if you go short be sure you like it and rock it! Confidence goes a long way whether your bio female or trans-woman.

I love short asymmetrical cuts. I have one, as can be seen in my avatar. I get gendered correctly occasionally, but it's still fairly hit and miss. I'm also still having electrolysis done. I'd say go for it.
These are way cute:

A couple of them look kind of emo, I guess. It depends on what you consider "emo."

Maybe it's just where I live, but I don't see why having short hair would be a big deal. I see a lot of women with short hair. Some with shorter hair than mine. Then again, there are also a lot of hairy hippy girls here too.

Another consideration to take in is that stastically speaking, men prefer long hair on women, so, if you are a hetero woman, that is something to think about.

For you who are lesbians anyway, get the "power"/"butch" cut together.  :D

I wear makeup sometimes. But I have electrolysis 2-3 times a week and I'm not supposed to really wear any the day before, day of, and day after. I also tend to get really bad breakouts from the electrolysis and makeup tends to just make it worse. I'm still trying to figure out eyeliner and eye shadow. I tried some eyeliner tonight and it just made me look goth. lol. When I do wear eye makeup it's usually just mascara and just a little bit of eye shadow that is slightly lighter than my natural skin tone. It tends to brighten my eyes a little bit. I live in Eugene, OR. My salon is LGBT friendly: http://hairvirtuososalon.com/ (http://hairvirtuososalon.com/) Are they emo? lol. My stylist mentioned that she dated someone who's trans. She didn't say whether or not this person was a transwoman or a transman.

Yeah..eyeshadow + eyeliner in various combinations won't result in goth. I have a nude eye on in my photo and thats a fairly modern celebrity look.

I think it was just the type of eyeliner and the fact that I applied it too thick, despite my attempts to avoid doing so, that made it look goth. Although, a girl I work with, who has shorter hair than me, always has super thick, dark eyeliner and it doesn't look goth. *shrug*

I can't believe people are using the term "goth". I got over that in 2000 when I became a raver.

How do you get it so straight? I try ironing mine, and it stays nice for maybe half a day. Then the tips start to curl up again... and if it gets at all wet, all my worqk goes for nothing.

In the summer I had to rub antiperspirant on my forehead so my hair wouldn't curl if I sweated.

I think you could easily do short hair i mean your face is only gentle featured :) unlike me with broad broad brow bone and huge manly nose i barely look feminine in appearance with long hair :) haha but i say do it but don't go and waste 3 years of growth donate it for those who could never get your locks :)

I just meant that goth was always the subculture that many people made fun of and viewed as a joke. I was wondering if emo was now the subculture that many people look down on and view as a joke, if it had largely supplanted goth in this respect. I don't really care how people dress. Too each their own. It's all just conspicuous consumption anyway. Whether you're a hipster with a septum ring who wears thrift store clothes, or you're sporting the latest designer swag, it's all just a different form of the same thing. But I suppose that's just the sociologist in me.

My hair is generally pretty wavy as well, and it curls badly on the ends. It's also very fine. I use a flat iron. I use a pretty expensive heat protection spray (Kenra Thermal Styling Spray 19) that has some hold to it, as well as argon oil styling cream mixed in. The more expensive heat protection spray is the only thing that I've found that works really well for my hair. The stuff my stylist uses works really well as well. I'll ask her what she uses and, when I run out of this stuff, I'll probably give it a try.

I wear my hair very short ala Halle Berry for years now.

Works perfectly for me even pre FFS (forehead only.....since I have natural high cheekbones, a natural scooped nose and natural tapering jaw and small chin)

Makes the (Audrey Hepburn/Jackie Kennedy early/mid 60's) clothes I wear look way better.

Goes very nice with large hoop earrings too.

I have fine hair but thank god it is so curly - it is so easy to rustle up lots and lots of volume so my hair looks way bigger than it is - and it is so nice to wake up with bed hair, it looks all wild and out of  place, but so easy to just scrunch it up with a little water and I am good to go!

also, don't forget age has a factor too - I dont understand why women going into 40s/50s/beyond have to do the power/butch cut - no wonder many husbands cheat on them, lol

Pretty much every hairstyle Vidal Sassoon created, I absolutely love.

Google image; Vidal Sassoon and you'll see where a majority of the best short hair styles came from. These styles were mod long before the scene kids ran with it. I think the scene kids like them because they have a sort of edgy and rebellious, but glamorous look to them.

When I transition I intend to either go with a five-point cut or a messy bob (think Victoria Beckham).

A few of Sassoon's styles.

Because of 'the witch look' most women with long hair develop after the age of  35, caused by gradual facial volumeloss that is.

And many husbands cheat on their wives anyway. With pre op MTF's  and not necessarely because they're so feminine but because they have a dick, which the wife at home hasn't.

Having (very) fine hair isn't very nice too; it just makes one look much older or even elderly...since women's hair thins severely post menopause.

Yeah, fortunately it is very curly so it lends well to building volume as opposed to being straight. I tried straightening my hair few times and you are right - it looks way too thin.

But then again, I had started to experience hair loss, so let s see what hormones will do for my hair over the months. It has been only 2 months so far but I can already see some new hair regrowth and the existing hair starting to come in thicker now. Yahoo!!!

Really? Hmm... the men I ve met so far who are into transgender women seem to be skirt-->-bleeped-<-s, so I question them, lol. But then again, the only ones I meet are in Divas and they are of questionable integrity.

All the men I've met are into women with vaginas and are in for the surprise of their life when they learn I don't got one.

It's kinda frightening... But yeah, a lot of guys were like, "It's not cool being deceived". Don't blame me for you not paying attention.

This sort of worries me. I had some guy hitting on me at the bus stop one time, and I'm not sure how he saw me. I had a guy hitting on me when I got my piercings too. And again, I'm not sure how he saw me. The guy that worked in the tattoo/piercing shop used the right pronouns, but I'm not sure if he saw me as a transwoman or a ciswoman. Then the guy who worked in the coffee shop next door came in and started hitting on me. He wasn't that bad looking--a little too short for my liking, though. He was a total hipster guy. He had really pretty eyes, though. He had really long, thick lashes. I was jealous. lol. If I hadn't been in a bitchy mood to begin with, I probably would have flirted back.

Well I've only seen limited pics of you. I'd advise turning up the flash on your camera and actually taking the photo from a flattering angle.

Lots of men are into transsexuals...I've yet to actually meet a guy like that though. I tend to attract alpha male types...guys who want to be seen in public with me. I don't know how they see that...But then again, I go out of my way to have the appearance of a preppy/fashionista appearance from top to bottom. I am gonna attract different men, then someone who is more or less at the fringes of society.

I went to Occupy and hella guys hit on me. But even though those types are at the fringes...they love preppy girls.

Wow that is pretty cool. You definitely have the shape for a hair style like that. :)

Pretty much I would say Short Hair is a hit or miss. I don't know if I'm going to keep mine short or not. I really don't know if I look good with long hair or short hair. However, I do need a hair cut soon because it needs shaping. I've been holding it off way too long so I can get it longer, but I do want to get an edge style. Trying to keep it jaw line or longer. Nothing shorter than that for me at least.

Says who??? lol. I'd much rather look like Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) from the Sex and the City (since I have volmunious curly hair) and have it down to breast length into my old age than like um.... Blanche (Rue McCahalan) from Golden Girls! heh

God, I totally love Sarah Jessica Parker's hair and cannot, cannot wait until my hair gets down to breast length! I am giving it at least 3 more years before it finally reaches that long. :(

The older you get the more your hair becomes thinner and is also more brittle.  That's why so few women over 50 have that bouncy, full of body kind of hair, and you get those shorter cuts as a way of dealing with that.

This ^^

I currently have a hair that's a few inches past my shoulder. But I'm still a long ways form passing, so I can't get it chopped off.

Even though my hair is currently a 'boys cut,' I'm hoping that people will see it and get the general idea even if they clock me haha.

I was always obsessed with long hair as a child and when I transitioned I spent years growing it out. It finally got pretty long as seen in this pic:
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fa7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net%2Fphotos-ak-snc1%2Fv4842%2F148%2F48%2F1247010228%2Fn1247010228_30779040_5655703.jpg&hash=867a11f55dd87029aee8fb38d5d4e85b99001048)

Then I went through some relationship issues that eventually led to a breakup causing a quarter-life crisis which compelled me to cut off most of my hair. It was a very freeing experience:
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fa4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ak-snc6%2F252976_1477136248849_1247010228_31432282_8220005_n.jpg&hash=b76e3326ef31f9a2ecbf7a07213b57e16907ce8d)

In terms of attracting guys, I had no problem doing so with shorter hair (though many men have told me they prefer long hair). And in terms of passing, I don't really think it made a difference. Masha, you pass extremely well so I don't think you would have a problem with a cute shorter cut (though I never went full pixie and can't vouch for that).

I compared the responses that I got by posting my pictures with my currently short hair and other pics with a long-haired , straight wig on my OkCupid profile -

Men are attracted to the face...the bod...the whole package. Makeup is important, but only because it emphasizes what you've got.

Well makeup and facial features have a good start up point when it comes to passing with short hair...so you don't look like this:

Haha that is very true. Even without makeup I feel I can pass but a little emphasis on the eyes I've found really helps feminize a lot (especially because I unfortunately have small eyes).

Also thanks MsDazzler and Guantanamera for the compliments! Short hair was really fun but I am in the process of growing it out again. I want hair down to my elbows I've decided! :P

I have a question for you short-haired females - do you find it easier or harder to be consciously feminine with short hair opposed to long hair?

I never had long hair and finally started growing it after I shaved my head bald and started to transition last year - now it is chin-length and looking forward to it finally reaching my shoulders and onwards to reaching my breasts.

The longer my hair gets, the increasingly femme I feel - you know, I start to spend more and more time takign care of it, love being able to flip my hair back, love the guy running his hand through my hair in bed (although, it tends to tangle in his fingers because it is curly)...

And I am a hypocrite - I admt it, I am comfortable with gender binarism and subscribe to the traditional image of a woman (in the straight guy's viewpoint, anyway) - long flowing locks, makeup, skirt or dress. heh

Well basically short hair works if you already have a femmie to andro face to begin with.

Look at Ashlee Simpson's short hair. I showed a pic of her to my b/f and he was like, "that's not good"

I think your face has not changed much from that picture with short hair and personally, I like you better with longer hair Mahsa. Your face doesn't looks much at all like the face of the girl you sent a picture of.

I think you could still pull it off though, as you should use what haircut makes you feel better.

Hormones don't change your face as much as using makeup efficiently and properly. Hair length, clothing, etc effect the overall picture. The effects are subtle, it's what you do with everything around the sublte effect that matters.

I had distinctive features(big eyes, small upper lip, high cheek bones) before...so of course, my eyes will never have changed.

Hon, it was a nice way of saying your adam's apple is showing.

I know what you were saying. I saw it when I took the pic, I liked it anyway.

What?! I was showing you my curly hair!  :D I can't wait for it to get down to my shoulders. This is after a year of growth.

I have a question for you short-haired females - do you find it easier or harder to be consciously feminine with short hair opposed to long hair?

Short hair or long hair, makeup or not, has nothing to do with it for me. Simply taking the hormones eases the dysphoria--or disconnect between my female mind and male-born body--and makes me feel wonderful. How I adorn my body is largely irrelevant.

Hormones don't change your face as much as using makeup efficiently and properly. Hair length, clothing, etc effect the overall picture. The effects are subtle, it's what you do with everything around the sublte effect that matters.

I'd have to disagree with you on this. Hormones have drastically changed my face, and I get gendered correctly occasionally now, even without makeup and with short hair, and even though I'm not quite done yet with electrolysis. Once I'm done with electrolysis and I've been on HRT for a couple years, I'm sure I'll have no problem being gendered correctly--without makeup, with short hair, in just a t-shirt and jeans, or however else I decide to express my gender.

I should also point out that I take more of an activist approach in my transition. I'm interested in educating people and addressing the larger social issues that affect those of us who identity as a sex other than the one we were assigned at birth. I'm not interested in just reaching a point of being "passable" and then living in "stealth." If that's your thing, or you feel you have to in order to survive, that's fine. But that's not my thing and I'm fortunate enough to live in a place where I don't face a huge threat of violence if I don't "pass." Also, for me, being a transwoman is not incompatible with being a woman.

HRT makes subtle changes, assuming you already had the raw elements to begin with. I don't count on it, I count more on my presentation and keepin my body in shape.

First of all, props to the activist approach! I am the first openly transgender woman at my workplace, so I have been sort of thrust in the "educator" role on trans issues at that workplace.

Second of all, I think you misunderstood my question - i know hair has nothing to do with feeling masculine or feminine, but i am asking if it made you feel more feminine to have long hair.

I have a short hairstyle, and I've very quickly fallen in love with having shorter hair. It's easier to maintain than long hair, quicker to straighten, and I just think it suits me better than long hair.

I wouldn't say short hair necessarily makes somebody more andro, there's plenty of short hairstyles which look extremely feminine. I will say that short hair seems to give off a different vibe than longer hair, short hair seems to have more "attitude".

It didn't make me feel more feminine, no. Wearing off the shoulder tops with a tank top underneath makes me feel more feminine than having long hair did. *shrug* I guess that's just me.

I can see that.
