Yeah, right. What I miss most of all because of the problems with my body, are periods.

Funny? Offensive?

Aren't those pretty much the exact same thing depending on how you see it?

I'm tempted to view most commercial representations of trans people as offensive.  Sometimes funny, too, but offensive nonetheless.  I can't imagine them having trans-positive intents when they make stuff like that.

We all got to face it, it is nolo contendre here.  I thought the commercial was funny though.  Just don't try to compete with the cis-women here.  Just being yourselves will get more points other than trying to compete with them in this manner.  Being yourselves will change the preception of others towards the transgender other than the stereotype shown in the commercial.  Our sisters who do overact in this manner looks clownish or bizarre to me and my cis-gender friends.  This commercial is just a reminder.

A good point, the original commercial in question, Libra Tampons, was clearly exaggerated and in the end offensive. Whereas the IKEA SP1 commercial makes one wonder if there isn't some hope for portraying TG/TS's in commercials. But for most of the commercials, Tortino's, Red Cross Australia, etc., it is still the same image...men dressed up as women.

Personally, I think it is offensive on several levels.

It is offensive in that it suggests that being a woman is about having periods. True, most girls think their childhood ends and being a grown up begins, when they have their period. But seriously, to define a woman by a period?

It is offensive as somewhat overly singular, not to mention inaccurate. Few people know when any woman is having her period or even if, but anyone knows that is a woman.

It is offensive in it suggests that transgender woman yearn for periods. There are many things I dislike about what I have to live with, not having periods isn't one of those.

It is offensive in it's portrayal of a transgender woman. It is obvious that it is a transgender woman. The actor is clearly attempting to create a very unsympathetic portrayal. But more importantly, the media portrayal of transgender invariably seeks to portray the individual as failing. As if it is daring any of us to object. Well, this transgender woman had broad shoulders, a deep voice, loads of facial and body hair, ugly bits and the stink to match. But I am still a transgender woman.

Well lets face it ANY commercial is offensive the abuse all just to get you attention .l
In some countries the call it economic propaganda !  on the pro side using this mean that trans is getting more in the normal view ,and with that is made absurd just to shock  >:-)

OH NO YOU GET PERIODS.
That's definitely a loss for me.
How ever did you know that's what I long for the most in my transition, too bad it's impossible ):

btw, I did think it was entertaining.
But that's more of a drag queen, not a transwoman.
When you look at it that way, it's less offensive.
Title: UPDATE: Libra regrets any offence taken to our recent tampon advertisement

From Libra's Facebook page

https://www.facebook.com/Libra/posts/320487091307231 (https://www.facebook.com/Libra/posts/320487091307231)

Libra regrets any offence taken to our recent tampon advertisement. It was never intended to upset or offend anyone.

Independent research was undertaken and the advertisement was viewed positively during that testing.

Libra takes all feedback very seriously, and in response to this, we will immediately review our future position with this campaign based on the feedback received. There are no further advertisements scheduled in New Zealand.

Is This Tampon Commercial From New Zealand Transphobic Or Just Stupid?

http://www.queerty.com/is-this-tampon-commercial-from-new-zealand-transphobic-or-just-stupid-20120102/ (http://www.queerty.com/is-this-tampon-commercial-from-new-zealand-transphobic-or-just-stupid-20120102/)

In the above commercial for Libra tampons, a drag queen in a slinky dress is engaged in a standoff with the biological female next to her. The biogirl "wins" the absurd pageant when she pulls out a tampon, thus demonstrating a real woman's superiority via her ability to menstruate.

Cherise Witehira, president of the trans rights group Agender NZ , told the New Zealand Herald that many in the community were outraged at the commercial, calling it "blatantly transphobic."

"It's extremely offensive because it's pretty much saying the only way you can be a woman is to get your period," Witehira said. "Obviously we can't menstruate. However, we identify as female."

I'd prefer to label it stupid, rather than transphobic.

Simply because I believe it is offensive to women.

The point that the 'transgender' woman looks more like a drag queen seems to be a general theme in most media coverage. I hope you don't feel this is confrontational, rather, using your point to emphasise one I made.

From my point of view, as I've previously indicated, to suggest having it pointed out to me that I don't have periods would be any sort of final straw is just stupid.

But the attack upon women is something else.

hmm, if you ask me, that whole debate is somewhat pointless and doesn't withstand close scrutiny (because if we took that ad seriously, it would mean that all post-menopausal women stop being women, with no sane being would agree to). On another meta level, ads like those simply reflect the inaptitude of the screenwriters to understand the issues they are raising (be they even just subconscious). it's either that or misogyny, well, it's probably a bit of both since I would claim misogyny permeates through all of life's various facettes *sighs*

It all is merely an indicator of the overall shallowness of consumer culture :) If they really wanted to have things resonate deeply in their viewers, they should raise issues with a bit more subtly
oh and btw, that reminds me of that Little Britain snippet I've seen once (I didn't actually have a clue about the series before) which I found a mix of unsettling, offensive and somehow shallow, and no, not even comic isolation seems to help there.

ah well, I'm drifting away....
*hugs*

Kia Ora,

::) No I didn't personally find it offensive, I smiled when I saw it on TV...[But this no doubt is due to my somewhat warped sense of humor]...However I was a little shocked when listening to the local news to hear Libra NZ had pulled the ad because of complaints*I think they said around 100 complaints*...

::) I thought it was a clever ad, showing[in a slightly exaggerated way] how competitive the women's bathroom can be at times...There are many ways in which one can take this ad, I just saw the funny side...

::) And if we can't laugh at ourselves who can we laugh at ?

True, if we can't laugh at ourselves who can we laugh at? But the media so often portrays us in a negative light that it becomes "fact" in the eyes of the Cis population.

This is an interesting one also, because its the first I've seen that portrays a Trans Man, and the operatic background music definitely gives this commercial an artsy twist.

SCA in hot water after commercial offends transgender community

SCA, the global paper company, has yanked an ad campaign in New Zealand for its feminine hygiene products brand Libra after it offended the transgender community.

The commercial features two women, one of whom is presumed to be transgender, competing with each other as they primp in a public bathroom. They try to one-up each other as they apply lipstick, mascara and adjust their cleavage.

The transgender character storms out when the other woman pulls out a Libra tampon.

Finally saw this ad as my YouTube access is not possible due to blocked Xactive, etc.

I just had to laugh out laud - sorry girls, its too funny for all I can tell. Just watching the faces and that 'one-up-man-ship' of the trans-girl. Also she was a willing participant in this hole affair. No reason to be holier then thou, eh.

Too funny, so I'm for one NOT offended at ALL, what's to be offended about I ask, hey?

Hugs,
Axélle

I found it annoying that the transwoman was also wearing makeup that was just way over the top. Maybe they were at a club and she was being fancy, that's cool, but I noticed the ciswoman's makeup to be a lot more "natural" and it just reinforces the stereotype of transwomen looking like drag queens all the time.

And the subtext of the commercial played out in my head like:

Ciswoman's mind: "Oh, look, a ->-bleeped-<-. Huh. I'll show her with my makeup skills that I learned from being a woman from birth, heheheh. Check it, my mom taught me this technique when I was 12..."
Transwoman's mind: "Oh, great, she noticed me. Well, I'll show her I'm a woman too. Check my fabulous makeup!"
Ciswoman's mind: "Oh yeah, well I have BOOBS!" *pushes up cleavage*
Transwoman's mind: "Oh yeah? Me too!" *pushes up cleavage*
Ciswoman: "I HAVE A TAMPON. AND A VAGINA. HA!"
Transwoman: "I can't afford surgery and I'll never have my period... Screw this, I'm leaving without even going to the bathroom. I'm going to hold it till I get home and have a good cry and some ice cream."

Had that been me:

My mind: "LOL I'm a cosmetologist, and I have more skills with makeup than this snotty ... woman. BTW your eyebrows look uneven!"
Ciswoman's mind: "Oh yeah, well I have BOOBS!" *pushes up cleavage*
My mind: "Get a boob job, mine are damn near as nice ... and she just reminded me that this bra is uncomfortable ... STUPID BRA!" *adjust bra*
Ciswoman's mind: "I HAVE A TAMPON. AND A VAGINA. HA!" *Shows me tampon*
I say, "Girl..  did you know Libra tests their products on virgin bunnies??? And what makes you think it's that time of the month for me???"

For the record, I have no reason to believe Libra tests their products on virgin bunnies.

And looking at the commercial, the trans looks to have struck first with trying to be competitive. She was all looking crazy at her while applying that mascara, lol. Yeah the cis gave a funny "... okay" look at first, but it could've been that cakeface the trans came in with. It was awful!
