Title: I've jumped on the pain bandwagon!!
Post by: Maegan on February 28, 2012, 07:54:47 AM
I got silly yesterday and bought myself an epilator. Of course, I HAD to try it last night. Freaking hell!! I honestly don't think any medieval torture device comes even remotely close to this "thing". This thing is evil!!!

As soon as I've built up some courage again, I will try and epilate another inch of my leg.

I do believe it gets better as time passes, or does it?

I keep trying to convince myself to buy one. But I'm kind of afraid of trying it with my wife in the house, in case my reaction is audible. And afraid of buying one, because I don't want to spend money on something that will sit in a drawer if I'm not woman enough for the pain.

LOL I had a feeling once i clicked on this, it was going to be about epilating.

I hate my fur, and I'm a bit of a masochist, so I enjoy getting it off of me.

I bought one a couple of years ago, used it for three four months. I like the razer much better. I couldn't give that damm thing away and it cost me $106 there was an hour and a half of missed electrolysis.

Are you using it on very short hair?  A decent epilator will pick up hairs as short as 1mm so hair should be trimmed very short before using it.
If used on longer hairs it will pull more and will be more likely to break the hairs off rather than pulling them out, which is much more painful and can cause ingrowing hairs.

@Beverley: I am lucky in that I do not have any body hair. Only my legs and underarms. Thanks for the advice. I will try the waxing route first and then use the epilator again.

@ JoeyD: Am I that predictable?

@ Gretchen: Come on, I dare you to use it again!

@ DonnaTroy: I dare you too!!

@ Siren: I bought a Philips Satinelle. It does grab the short hairs VERY well, maybe too well to my liking! I have not used it on long hair at all.

It gets better and easier. I can do my chest and most of my stomach almost pain free. It still hurts a bit on fine hairs on the side of my stomach but it tolerable. The spearmint tea is helping too with regrowth. Everything is coming in slower and softer. It's been weeks since I did my lower legs and I've only gotten a few stray hairs here and there.

WAXING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just too much adrenalin wasted...

Though if things get as light as in my face, yes FACE, then it is easy peacy. I use the epilator once a week in my face after electrolysis to get a basis for next weeks electrolysis.

But I agree with not liking stubble, its icky, even on gg legs!

You want to experience pain? Epilate your stomach....

:'(

---

Pro tip: alcohol + epilation the first couple times (or if your boring maybe some paracetamol or equivalent :P ). After the first few goes it really weakens your hair and it comes out easy with no pain.

Yes it does! - but it takes a while.   You have to persevere but once the hairs are fine and weak the pain is a insignificant.
The benefit of the epilator above shaving is obvious - no strong, sharp stubble.
The benefit over waxing is that it is not messy and a major project - having cleared, I just use mine for 2 minutes at a time when I notice hairs on a particular small area.
I do my underarms with it too.

I must just say...... I had been elipating for a year and was fine and happy with everything about it.  Then out of the blue, although the hair on my arms was only fine fuzz it suddenly became so very painful to do that I could not bear to do it at all.    That lasted about 6 weeks but then all was well again and I was back to happily epilating.  I have no idea why that little spell happened though.

I've been going to electrolysis sessions 2 straight hours a week for the past month. Through the pain, I've convinced myself to like it somehow, knowing it will all be worth it one day. Today when I was lying there in pain, I thought to myself "you're becoming a masochist!"  :P

By the way, I've been to Wal Mart, Walgreens, Target, etc, I just can't seem to find a damn epilator in stores! Anyone know where to get one?

I touched the epilator down there once when I got the idea in my head that I would do that area. It grabbed a couple of hairs and that was that. Shaving is fine in that place.

Epilating underarms...... this WILL hurt the first time(s)  :(

KEEP THE SKIN TAUGHT   so that you get a simple pluck...... if the skin can pull loosely with the hair then it hurts a lot worse

About a year ago at Walmart I bought:

Remington Smooth and Silky Complete Epilator Kit
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Remington-Smooth-and-Silky-Complete-Epilator-Kit/14978540 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Remington-Smooth-and-Silky-Complete-Epilator-Kit/14978540)

I don't have a problem with it hurting, but if I do exclusive epilation on my legs I get ingrown hairs that just sit barely under the surface and you can see them, so I alternate between epilation and shaving/exfoliating to balance things out. I did try sugaring at home which was sorta fun but in terms of effectiveness, the epilator is the way for me. (no suga tonight)

After the first month or so to get through the growth cycle, all of the hair that regrows is finer (except for the ones which snapped instead of plucked) so the pain level gets less.
Remember, the first time you ever plucked your eyebrows you probably wanted to yelp too.  It gets better.
Ingrown hair can be a problem - I scrub myself hard with an exfoliating glove.  Once the hair breaks out and is no longer ingrown, pluck it for quicker healing of any inflamed spot and use antiseptic cream.

My epilator is a wet/dry model and I find rinsing the head in alcohol after each use has dramatically reduced red spots and infected follicles.

Also, I think many stores that have websites will have "online only" products on their web site, but still allow you to return in your local store. I've never done that myself, so I don't know how easy or complicated it is, but is another option that might not require shipping back a return. Just make sure you know the chain's return policy.

I got used to the pain level fairly quickly, but once the HRT kicked in the hair on my legs thinned a lot and started to break off just below the surface.  Growing out it itched unbelieveably and I had to go back to waxing and shaving.
I wimped out on the back, stomach and chest, and had laser. Not quite as bed. :o
Ended up giving it to my GF as she wore hers out. Wonder how long this one will last?

Huh? Wa was  dat? Sober? Mee?

Okay, I'm sober. Actually it wasn't too bad. The only problem I seem to have is that some of the hair seems to have broken off, instead of being pulled out. I've only done the one leg so far and I've been wondering whether I should let the hair grow a bit longer before doing the other leg. The hair on my legs are quite thin after being on HRT for a year and two months now, so I am not sure if that is the problem.

I'm not going to lie, it hurt. But, not as bad as I thought it would. I took a really hot shower and stretched the skin as tight as I could and that helped a bit. If it doesn't get better after a couple of more times, I'll be back to shaving that area. It is very nice how smooth that area is right now, much more than shaving.

Once upon a time, the answer would have been 'single malt scotch'. :D

You will be. I have grown to loathe my body hair and the less of it I have the more loathe what is left.

Surely you don't add water to your scotch!?! Well, unless you're buying cask strength Macallan....but watering down a 12 or 15 year old brings tears to my eyes.

HIGHLY OFF-TOPIC

Living only a few hour's drive from the world centre of Scotch production, I have indulged myself on several tours over the years and the distillery people are quite adamant about the issue of water in scotch. They say that, straight from the bottle, whisky is so strong that it numbs the pallette and if yuo  want to detect delicate notes and flavours then dilute by half. This is why trained blenders rely on smell.

At the local whisky festival, the reps had water on every table.

Ahhhh...what do they know?! But seriously, I bow to the knowledge and experience of those that make the nectar of the gods (unless of course you are talking about a really fine tequila, but I digress). Thanks for the info....I will have to conduct some taste tests......

Hey it might get better after a couple of times!
The hair does thin out when pulled from the root.

I can't wait to scream from doing that area lol.

I've done the original area that I did down there about three times now and it does get easier to do. Each time I've been doing a little bit more. Now I just have about an egg sized area in the middle that I haven't epilated. That area seems to be the worse!

If i wax that area, and then keep epilating it, that is the only way it feels any better... Bit waxing in genwral just feels so much easier, though it can be messy.
