Today I had my first laser hair removal session for my face. That's not what I want to share with you, but the fact that before going in I was "hmmm... you sure that's what you want? You sure? You sure? Uh? Really?", and right after going out of the session I found myself walking the streets with a smile that I just couldn't control. The kind of natural happiness that seemed to be scarce until I started to focus on transitioning.
I'm sure I had this feeling of juvenile happiness before, but it's been a while. It's been a very long time indeed.
I had my first session Saturday. I'm already seeing an improvement. I went through pretty much the same progression of reactions you did.
I had the same fears before I went in for the first time. But I'm so glad I started doing *something* now.
Got my 4th IPL session in two weeks and there's been a massive difference so far. There's still a little stubble and shadow but nowhere near what I had before. It's a great feeling to get to the end of the day and still feel relatively smooth, probably at what would pass for a half assed shave before starting. It doesn't even really hurt I find, maybe laser is different..
Plus the woman who does it is lovely, I ended up outing myself to her at the second session! Only her and SO have been told anything.
Congrats to all three of you.
I'm actually doing electrolysis instead of laser, but I had the same reaction when I finally built up the nerve to make the appointment. Mine has no clue about the reasoning, but says that she's had several men get a lot more work done that I'll be doing. I have a baby face, so it only comes in in patches.
Wo!
I'm glad to read that my chain of reactions is not an isolated case... that means that I'm not the only one experiencing the joy of dealing with something that used to be a source of anxiety, confusion and trouble :-)
Hope you all keep transitioning well, until you feel comfortable with the person at the other side of the mirror!
I started laser on Thursday. Hurt pretty bad, and smelled AWFUL. I get self conscious going to the spa, the staff are SO beautiful that they remind me how awful I look. But still, I was so happy to make a start.
Had my first laser session about 2 weeks ago. While I shared the smiles after, cant' say I went in with any doubts or questions buzzing around in my head. Just couldn't wait to take that particular first step.
Removing your facial hair is one of the best things you can do to progress your transition. It should be up there at the top of your list (I am a little biased though ;)) It's something you can start before anything else, no gatekeepers and no shrink letters required. The sooner you start the sooner you'll be finished, definitely time for a celebration....
Yea! The sooner the better :-)
Facial hair is one of the main reasons I still feel uncomfortable going out dressed like a woman (although I do it very often). Even with a thick layer of DermaBlend, I feel like everyone looks at me and sees a man in a costume. Can't wait to have it totally removed!
Being able to go out without any foundation, especially something as heavy as dermaBlend or similar will probably also go some way to helping you pass better and draw less attention. I've heard it said on more than one occasion that "she looks like a bad ->-bleeped-<- with all that make up" on both occasions it was said about genetic women. Less is definitely more and when it's hot who wants all that cak on their faces...

Sorry but voice is THE most important part, that many neglect. You can get away with shaving and a good beard cover. You -can't- get away with a male voice. Nothing is needed for this as far as gatekeepers either and even paying a speech therapist, it's cheaper than any form of hair removal.

I think both are equally as important but for different reasons. I think the removal of the facial hair is more important in private because you finally get to see yourself in the mirror without a shadow and without having to work really hard to cover it up. Voice doesn't really come into play when you're checking yourself out in the mirror. For going out into the world, voice is by far the more important.
So really both are good things to do side by side early on and voice really does take a lot of work. You can't just wing it when the time comes. It's like completing a degree on a single subject. Lots of homework and lots of dedication required. I've been trying to work on it alone for about a month now and while I can hit the right base tone, I still sound like Mickey Mouse. Will be seeking professional help shortly.
Alex how are things going? I am almost perfectly lined up with you in terms of starting laser. My second session is tomorrow and I am super excited. After just the first session with the Lightsheer laser half of my neck hair is gone, my cheeks are patchy and my chin hair has been reduced significantly.
Not looking forward to the imminent breakouts that occur a week after a laser session... Here's to hoping I get less breakouts this time around!
Can't wait until that 3rd or 4th session when things really start to look good!

Eps Jenny! Yep, that summarizes how I feel! I'm having the second session next week's friday (seems like we have similar schedules xD), and I'm really really looking forward to making progress. You see, The first session did of course reduce growth, but it's still poping out fast and strong, specially the moustache and chin areas.
But I'm optimistic and, most of all, pacient :-)
Good luck tomorrow!!

I say voice and adams apple must be sorted first. Facial hair is nice when its gone but i have many cis females with faster upper lip growth then me. Just saying :P
But i am about 8 months from my laser sessions anyways XD glad to see they can make a person smile!

Same w/ me for the mustache and chin area. Thanks for the good luck, I think it went really well. He turned up the intensity on the laser and it was still less painful than the first time. My face is a bit more red this time though, probably due to the laser intensity getting notched up.
Dang, forgot how much I hate the 2-3 days after a laser session... I hate having any stubble at all but I must resist shaving at least today, and on top of that it looks really weird with all the patches of missing hair on my neck, cheeks, and below the chin- plus the redness. Last time I shaved the next day and I think that's why I got so many pimples which sucked. Also I don't wanna wear any makeup for the same reason, my skin is super dry and irritable. It's crazy what a difference not being able to shave / wear makeup does to my dysphoria. Been kind of down today, I don't wanna go outside or be seen by anyone not even my friends. I do not feel like myself :(
I know waaa waaa right?? Lol...

Yep, I agree... it's amazing how those little things can trigger dysphoria and anxiety. I am a guitar teacher and I haven't come out yet to co-workers... I don't think I will until I start HRT. The thing is that I love nail polish, but it's not like I can teach how to play the guitar as a male with black nails and don't rise suspictions xD So every time I have to remove the nail polish, I feel like those 2 or 3 days after laser.
The thing that helps me the most is to repeat myself that this is only a stage of the transition, and that from that point it's all going to get better. The best of this mantra is that it's the truth :-)

I am having my grey stubble removed at the moment by electrolysis and I
hate growing it for the 3 days beforehand so I now do double sessions - 2 hours - so that I only have to grow the stubble once a month. I hide during the stubble period.
How are you doing after your second session, Alex?
All smiles over here :D
Hey there Jenny!
Glad to hear that! I had the second session last friday, and I'm having a hard time not shaving xDD I want to wait until tomorrow because my skin is very sensitive... but the session went good; they gave more power to the laser, so I suppose that I'll notice better results as I shave :-)
Thanks for caring! Hope to hear more progress on your transition very soon :-)

The hair is falling out everywhere, it's amazing. Cheeks & neck are nearly all the way clear save a few very small patches. Even chin & upper lip are starting to go too, slowly.
People are taking notice, I can see it in their eyes! Makeup is going on so well now. Stubble regrowth is continuing to slow, and the shaves are getting closer and closer... I had no idea how much of an effect on my mood getting rid of the facial hair would have... Wowowow
I think in one or two more sessions things will be looking really, really good :D
Glad to hear you are nearly back to the point of being able to shave. It's rough, I know!!!

This is
your opinion - and you are more than welcome to have it..
I've had one round of laser facial and my second in a couple of weeks. Noticed a difference after the first week. I didn't know if I would go through with it, but so glad I did, now I'm thinking about calling the derm. office and adding my lower torso, since I'm going once a month I might as well maximize my trip. I'm thinking I'll use electrolosis for the 20 or 30 hairs on my chest and nipples because that might work out cheaper than lasering my chest.
I love how smooth my face is after I shave now.

Just had my third session. I told my Dr... "do as much as you want, I can handle it. Turn it up!"
He said "I like to hear that, I will go as aggressive as you want- I'm really just here to look after your skin"
THEN! At least 50 hairs fell out while washing my face in the bathroom shortly after! Mainly from the problem areas I've been dealing with shaving for the past lifetime (sides of the goatee area). I nearly cried I was so happy. He really got 'em good this time. Can't wait to see the full results in a week. I have such a good feeling about this one!!!
My skin is almost already back to normal color... the redness has already almost completely subsided.
PEW PEW PEW! Get that hair outta here!!!
Thanks for keeping us up to date Jenny, reading about your experience in this thread has made me feel much less apprehensive about my first session in two weeks, in fact i'm getting very excited. i can't wait ;D
Nicki xx
Just had session number seven yesterday I feel your joy/pain!
My pleasure nicki! It's great having a place where the updates could actually matter or help someone :)
Penny I'm curious to know what your results are after seven... Is your face clear yet or at the very least beard shadow gone? I cannot wait to get rid of the beard shadow... omg.
Jenny, keep in mind I *have* rather had a VERY thick beard to start with. I could actually get splinters from it and on a few occasions actually drew blood with the stubble and prolonged contact. After the seven sessions thus far, the sides are clear! Yay! Now it hurt like hell the first few times because since the hair was thick there was more to heat.. So thinner hair is not as painful. Now the "muzzle" area is a different story, it's much thinner however since the skin Is more sensitive in that area my tech tends to dail things back so she dosen't cause damage to my skin. On the sides with the little hair I had left she was able to put the setting up to 9 out of ten and it wasn't bad at all. The muzzle was still at an 8. This last session she tried to switch up technique and try less intensity but longer time. And the last point, we have done spacing from four, five and six weeks trying to find the "sweet spot" of growth. The last two were six apart while the next is four away. But over all I'm pleased with the results and can't wait until the face is complete. It's nice to actually be able to see and feel my skin instead of that sand paper I was stuck with. Maybe one more and we may be there.. Then time for the electo to start.. Oh joy... :o
Definitely smiled a lot today when I shaved... TONS of hair fell out all over the muzzle area.
I can actually see my skin! And right after shaving hardly any blueness to the beard shadow. I can't believe how good it looks and feels already.
I've noticed after this round the hair is growing back much much slower and my skin is baby butt smooth. Maybe it's because the hormones are finally satiating all those follicles, too. Either way, I LOVE IT! :D :D :D
Also how's it going, Alex??
I worked for a medical laser company that bought the lightshear company,
and I could have used one then, but was kind of freaked out at the entire thing,
so years later people figure out that you can save lots of money hand have bad beam quality,
and I ended up buying a 60W laser for hair removal,
it has the same power density of the lightshear laser, but is a smaller area
and it wipes out the hair for a short while,
but it seems to grow back...
but I was very excited at the $1700 purchase that seemed to be in the correct direction,
to bad it did not work super well,
I should have gone to a place that does it
I begin laser hair removal next Wednesday. Apparently they can use numbing cream on your face so it doesn't hurt as much. Have you ladies tried the numbing cream? Was it successful? I'll probably try it out.
I have actually had the numbing cream on all my sessions but one and I think it does help some. I had started with such a thick beard, both in density and size of each hair that the first few times were nearly unbearable. It's actually kinda funny because my tech will actually cringe more then me sometimes. The upper lip and goatee / muzzle area have been the hardest to knock out, so last time she numbed me up and attempted a lower intensity and longer time, it still hurt like hell either way. But other then that area nearly everything else has been cleared off. I had one tech say numbing helps, while another said it hinders, I just know the one time I had a different tech and she didn't numb me I was in so much pain my knees were shaking, I started sweating and could barely stand for a few min after the session. It was just really, really intense. How some say it's pain free is beyond me, and I do have a pretty decent tolerance for pain. But I guess it all comes down to hair thickness and personal preference. If you can take it without, then you can get in and out faster, but if they're not charging you and you have the time then I say go for it. Best wishes!

Thanks for the information!! I'm definitely going to try the numbing cream!
I've had it every time, seems to work for me! Just don't get it in your mouth unless you want to have noodle tongue
Also I usually put one coat on an hour before, let it absorb, and apply a second coat a half an hour before the session. It's still painful, but I can't even imagine what it would feel like w/o it!
Then on the way home I run the A/C in the car and blow my face with cold air, seems to help with the redness by the time I get home :D
Good luck!
So they numbed my face with some gel. It felt so weird at first but then it was alright. Then after 30 minutes of waiting for the numbing to come into affect she did the laser treatment. She started with my sideburns, which don't really have much hair so I was like "is this really it? why was I so scared??" because it didn't hurt at all. BUT THEN she went into the more hairy areas and OMG IT HURT SO BAD. It hurts more in the neck area than the 'stache area. It feels like the hair particle being sucked out and you can smell the hair burning. Kinda gross. After about 20 minutes it was all done. If I didn't have the numbing gel I would be cursing like a sailor but I wasn't (I was close though!).
The first few sessions can be pretty intense until the hair starts thinning out. Give it time, it'll hurt less and less.
Congrats Holly!
Don't worry the neck hair will be some of the first to go. Next time around it will be half as painful. After 2 sessions basically all of my neck was clear after the shedding was done. Just wait until they start increasing the laser intensity though ;) Then everything starts to hurt! For me at first it was the neck too, then the sides of the goatee area. Now all that's left for me after 3 sessions are a few small patches on the chin & still quite a few on the upper lip. That is going to hurt next time.
Happy to report I have experienced NO regrowth at all... My doc is kinda shocked, I am ecstatic. Hopefully this means I will have less laser sessions than they thought. Glad I went for a smaller package to start with :D
For the first 3 sessions, my doc had me spaced at 4 week intervals, this one in between session three and four is a 6 week period. Cannot. Freakin. Wait.
Happily though I finally found a way that works to me to hide the stubble for the time being.
By the way might I add, Holly you are gorgeous! Is that you in your profile pic? WOW!
4th laser session DONE!
It's really starting to show improvement now, i was up to level 24 on the face and 22 on the upper lip. Hair on cheeks & neck: GONE! Upper lip beard shadow already minimal, so very eager to see how much sheds in a week or two!! I can see my skin!!!
Lasers and smiles, they go hand in hand :) I've been in the best of moods all night.
I had my 2nd laser treatment 2 weeks ago. The first time really hurt bad, I hardly could stay in the chair, but now the second time there was no pain anymore, as the first treatment really killed most of the facial hair.
Now after the second treatment, my face is nearly completely smooth and I am happy :D
There are still hair growing here and there, but I think one or two additionall laser treatments will be sufficient for me now. The nurse was also surprised how complete the hair loss was with just one treatment. Then there are those white hairs, which the laser wont kill :(
The first treatment session had a funny incidense. The nurse was halfway through treating my face, when she asked: "You do understand, that this treatment will kill the hair for good and it doesn't grow back?".
Funny question to ask while being midway through ;D

Thanks for sharing your hair stories. I had a beard forever and hated shaving but nothing says "man" like a beard and it was high on my list for removal. Now on HRT and having had a single laser treatment I am delighted with the slow regrowth and reduction in 5 o'clock shadow. It is much easier to feel pretty without it! Laser does sting and those lightning flashes that I "see" in my head are a pretty interesting show. I too opted for the topical anesthetic and highly recommend it do reduce that "flinching" every burst. There are something like 30,000 hairs on our face so laser is good choice for most of us.
It is a big and relatively permanent step and no more growing and playing with a mustache and beard an easy choice for me to appear any more feminine.
Smile on!
Tessa James
After several postponements and false starts I finally had my first laser session yesterday, phew! Like Tessa James I felt the sting of the laser (and saw the light show inside my eyelids!) but I didn't have any numbing anesthetic and it was totally tolerable. The technician said I was the first person not to flinch whilst having the face done. So far no redness or pain afterward just a warm glow inside knowing that I'm on the way to a smooth clear hair free complexion at last. Smiling all the way to work today ;D

session #5 under the belt :D
This time on setting 24, and he went over the upper lip and chin TWICE! Hahaaa yes!! Gtfo my face, silly hairs! Take THAT!
I am super smiley despite having red face. Lasers and smiles... what a perfect thread title!
That's great Jenny! You look amazing btw Jenny! HRT is working really well for you.
I just had my third treatment today. She used a different laser this time with a wider area and OMG it freakin' hurt so bad. I still have some patches of facial hair under the chin area and upper lip area. Hopefully in a few weeks the hair will fall out from this 3rd treatment. I still have 2 more treatments left in this package so I'm not too worried. I hopefully start HRT in July so maybe that will help with the hair too.
Thanks holly!! Glad to hear laser is working well for you, too!! :)

3rd time behind for me too. This time it hurt badly, but that's good, as it means that the hairs are dying :)
The nurse even said, that after this treatment, most hairs are gone and there should be a visible change.
I hope...
About to head in for round 6, the last one I have paid for.
I had pretty significant regrowth on my upper lip and chin which is a bummer, but hopefully it's gone (a lot more of it at least) for good this time.
I might start using my Tria laser a couple of weeks after and on keep it on a two week schedule. I've only used it on my chest so far.
Hi just looking for a bit of advice - I'm going for my laser test on Tuesday, I'm in the UK and the lady told me I only need 6 treatments to remove my upper lip hair - does this sound right? My moustache area is the worst on my face, very dense and thick hair... I pluck and tweeze the hair out but regrowth has been about the same it's always been...
At £180 I can't really afford to have anymore done at the moment but this makes the most upset - seeing that shadow over my make-up is really bringing me down... I use facial hair remover cream on the rest of my hair and then shave what little is left, it leaves me smooth for a few days before haiving to repeat the process.
Does it hurt really bad? I'm very sensitive - just a few weeks back I burnt my face with the remover cream... I applied way too many times, then put Savlon ontop... it stung like a bitch! :embarrassed:
It's thankfully all cleared up now though, my face feels fine otherwise. Any help would be appretiated

Yeah it's going to hurt like a mother. The upper lip is in my opinion the most sensitive part. It was the most dense for me there, too.
If they are thinking they will clear it in just 6 sessions that probably means they are going to run the laser pretty hot- so be sure to apply a generous amount of the numbing cream they supply and then try to seriously just think about something else / keep your mind off of the laser and bear through it!
Maybe they have the new one that blasts CO2 though, supposedly it's a lot less painful. You should probably find out what kind of laser it is. If you have dark hair and light skin, diode is what you want.
Hi thanks Jennygirl :)
I checked and they use the Ellipse I²PL system - it says on the salons website it's "the most effective hair removal system in use today"
Yeah I thought it'd be sore... god I don't know if I can take the pain lol!
There's comments from some of the people who have been and they say it's amazing, no stubble or re-growth at all! And the pictures really do it justice too - which is why I chose this salon. The lady seems very friendly and helpful so I hope things work out ok and I can go back there if I make it through Tuesday to have other areas done. Here's hoping the 6 sessions are enough for my lip *crosses fingers*
Well I hate to say it, but I figure I should warn you... IPL isn't good... it doesn't go deep enough to get to the deep root of male beard hair. IPL is not even actually a laser- it stands for intense pulsed light. It has it's own set of benefits, but not when it comes to removing male type facial hair.
Diode Lasers, like Alexandrite or LightSheer, are the clear winners for this job. The roots we need to get at are too deep for IPL. They need a more focused and very high wavelength in order to be treated successfully.
I hope you haven't paid anything non-refundable, because I would REALLY recommend going to a place with a diode laser. Otherwise I can almost guarantee you'll be wasting your money!!
Maybe someone else here has done IPL with a good outcome, but I haven't read a single good thing about it online for this specific task. Generally not recommended!
Just a heads up! Hope this helps!

What really?! :(
I was sure ILP would be ok, but the six session's started alarm bells ringing in my head... seems like others have to go for way more then that... I'm dissapointed for sure.
But then again I'd rather not waste my money, the booklet for the site says it's only a 5 minute treatment for upper lip hair... that got me alittle worried too. Guess I'll have to cancel my appointment & look at another salon - maybe Glasgow or Edinburgh will have the them...
Thank you so much for replying Jenny - to think I'd probably waste my money and be happy for like a month then have the hair grow back... that would be devastating >:(
