Title: What do you do for work?
Post by: NYCTSGirl01 on March 06, 2013, 04:25:03 PM
I find there are so many companies that say they are transgender friendly but, in all actuality they would not hire someone trans. I was just wondering what you guys do for work. Did you transition on the job or got hired trans.

I work for an electronics assembly house. I work in boy mode, and get called Devlyn. I'm not trasitioning, but came out to them as a crossdresser. It's been nothing but positive.

What companies were you refering to that don't adhere to their policies? And the obvious question,  what about you? Hugs, Devlyn

I work as a Tax Consultant, as it's quite a large firm, they're quite professional about it (I had to tell them because I had to supply records of old school certificates etc), but in the workplace I forget I'm trans 90% of the time. In my experience and from the experience of others, being trans isn't a huge obstacle and in many cases isn't a factor at all.

Let's not go there folks.

I'm retired now, but I held many different jobs both as a (ugh) male and as a woman.

I spent the last few years working as a paralegal doing bankruptcies, wills, living trusts, etc. (as myself, Sarah and was well accepted by those I worked with)

Overall i have had trouble finding work. I was hired by one company then fired when they found out. Another hired me knowingly and I got laid off. Now I'm in school and I work for a Catholic School (don't ask). It is not a job I want but, I have no choice. I feel very uncomfortable there and it drives me crazy. I not only have to deal with the staff but, Its an ordeal when you don't know if a parent if going to complain about you working with there child.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. May I ask if you worked for small companies or large ones?  The present arrangement makes you uncomfortable, so that's no good. It's not easy going to work when you don't like it. Hugs, Devlyn

I've worked for both. A small company is the one that hired me knowing I'm trans. A large company was the one who hired and fired me.

I work for a mobile carrier and started transitioning on the job. when I got the ok to start using the appropriate bathroom HR was dead serious about me letting them know if anyone gives me a hard time. its been a pretty positive experience so far with few minor bumps. I used to do reporting but that got outsourced. so they put me in with sales force management which us different.

Right now I work in IT for a hospital network in the Pacific Northwest. I'm not out yet there, but because of internal corporate politics and organizational restructuring I'm hoping to get out. For the most part I answer phones. I used to do more, but my job has devolved into being just a phone monkey, and with my voice being one of my dysphoria triggers, it's beginning to really bother me.

I've recently interviewed for a SQL development position for a software company around town. I know the QA lead there, and he wants me on his team, so this is about as much of a sure thing as I'm going to get for getting a new job. It'll pay a hell of a lot more than what I'm making now, and it's more in line with what I went to school for, so I'm crossing my fingers I'll get a call in the next couple of days that I've gotten the position.

I don't plan on coming out at work for at least another year, as much as I would like to. Privately, I may start trying to pass once I've got this hair situation under control. Professionally.... yeah. I want to make sure that I've got a year or two of QA devolpment under my belt (bra?) before I come out. That way if things go south, I've got a decent add on my resume, and then start applying elsewhere as a woman. We'll see.

I own my art based business, very very busy with customers all over the country, some are quite high profile names that most people would recognize, I also have work in a couple major movies.

And this is my biggest dilemma, I can't think of any way possible to go full time without some huge issues! I'm sure it would even make a few popular magazines, most likely the same ones that have featured my work....and it would not be favorable coverage in this very male dominated demographic I do work for.

At least I work from my large shop at home and local customers are by appointment only so I can just be myself as I work....it's all so frustrating

I used to work for a chemical plant in a shift system (12h shifts 7 to 7 either day or nightshifts) but when i was about to comming out to my parents and family, i noticed this job wouldnt last. not only because it has some hard physical labour on occasions. but the co workers were immense sexists. day in day out i only heard negativity in humiliation of females. thats when i knew i could not transition there or my life would be hell. So i switched to the family company where i worked part time outside of my shifts and just made that my fulltime job. When my stephfather founded the company i was the one who helped it get on his feet and continued to help him out on my free days. since i was the one who helped found it back in the time i had the title of " co-manager" wich the new employees never received. So when i made it my full time job i kept that title and i am still the co manager of the company doing mostly all the administration, paperwork, bills, taxes and such. Atm i am transitioning on this job with very little problems the only person above me is my stephdad who, at the same time, is also the most difficult person as he is a stubborn guy and he is very traditional and conservative ( he refuses to aknowledge me as a girl and keeps saying i am a boy and that it will never change for him) but other then that our employees are very understanding and are supportive wich wouldn't have happened at my old job.

No, seriously that's what I do except that I don't sit in a cubicle. Basically I'm a teacher. I teach computers how to do things they couldn't do before and freak out at people for asking me the same question over and over and over again (and it's always the same people doing it too).

I work for a major (perhaps the major) Electronic Health Record company. Which means I get to go to strange cities like Detroit and get called "Miss" and "She" by the nice (or possibly blind) valets. And also probably make the people I'm supposed to be helping very uncomfortable.

I'm transitioning at work; not out yet; one local trans* employee going ahead of me; everyone's very professional and polite.

I am a consultant for the engineering industry and I maintain offices at five different firms, and I teach on occasion as well.

I have several degrees in varying disciplines (four related to engineering), four of which are doctorates. Yes, I am a prodigy. I started university when I was fourteen and I have Aspergers as well. Being from Canada, I am protected on two fronts, firstly, for being on the Autism Spectrum and, secondly, for being transgendered. Companies try to avoid human rights tribunals at all costs, here. It's bad publicity and a drain on resources.

I was given a few strange looks when I told people that I was transgendered and a few people decided they didn't want to talk to me anymore. That didn't last long, though, because they needed me to sign off on their work. They've all seems to come around to accepting it in some way as best as I can tell. My appearance is quite androgynous. I don't wear skirts at all, so I don't stick out in that fashion, but on occasion I will wear dress crops or something similarly feminine and no one says anything unless some of the females say they look nice or want to know where I purchased them. The tops I wear are relatively unisex and don't draw much attention. Even if I wear a feminine top, my breasts aren't big enough to be noticed; it looks like I have pectorals. No one stares. I'm treated like a normal person. The men still treat me like "one of the guys" and the women treat me like a woman. I don't think many people care, really. I still get invited out to the various functions, most of which I decline, but nothing has really changed. Maybe the fact that I lack social awareness plays a factor, but I haven't noticed anything other than the women being extra nice to me now.

EDIT:

I'm also allowed to use whichever washroom I choose. I use the women's washroom ninety-eight percent of the time with no objections.

I'm calling you out on having 4 PhD's, surely you have some sort of proof?

Oh I know, being transgender compared to so many other things is so very little. I think as a whole healthcare is likely a little more accepting due to this fact. Also I feel so many healthcare professions include at least teaching some awareness of trans individuals, which also helps. I was completely surprised by the patients which for the most part were very accepting. Like I said over time people just moved on and me being transgender is rarely even ever brought up.

Ditto. I had the work ethic of a couch potato at that age. I wanted a degree in everything, but didn't want the job, just the knowledge. Spent a lot of years just trying to stay off welfare, food shopping at dollar stores, extremely bad credit, etc. Eventually I took my primary hobby and spent 10 more years bouncing from company to company until one of them gave me a chance to get paid for it.

But really, I don't know what I'll be doing, I need to find something that pays enough to pay these student loans off and enough to live on. Would be nice to find an open minded employer too.

I work for a certain Swedish furniture store and transitioned on the job. It was pretty intense dragging my coworkers into a room and explaining what was going on, but they were all wonderful. Between hrt and longer hair most of my customers thought I was a girl anyway, so it was a pretty easy transition in that regard too.

I've only got another 4 days there, and I'm off to work for a fashion label which is just so exciting! I seriously never would have thought that was a possibility at all, but here I am! (Now I just need to decide what to spend my wardrobe allowance on :) )

In between that, I'm almost finished my masters in hr, so I'm on campus a couple days a week. I took a year off uni while I transitioned, and told a lecturer that I had gotten along very well with. She was amazing, and helped me out with changing my name on their records and getting a new transcript and parchment issued. As for the students, almost everyone I was with graduated on my year off, so it's a bit of a fresh start this year.

Oh, and at 19 I moved to the country, set up my own business and ran it for the next 6 years. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but it was hard hard work and I missed out on a lot. I still sort of envy my friends that were carefree and going between jobs and study at that age. I guess the grass is always greener?

Not me fortunately, those guys work so hard and have a tough job.  I work on non-gaming applications for GPUs.

Hi ZoeM,

Have you looked at the Sentillion application (bought last year by Microsoft) for providing SSO in the Hospital sector. It has APIs into EPIC, Cerner, Allscripts, McKesson, ISOft and the like.

OK my secrets out - I am too in the software business.

I unfortunately drive a tractor trailer in a regional position, oddly I want to work in IT, I am working on that, but at least I can pay my bills. I worry a bit about the conservative culture there, but the things I have done already towards my transition haven't mattered because I don't really have to deal with bosses, mainly just a computer or people over the phone, and I have no real appearance standard in my handbook.

Gee..Girl...and I thought I was the the prodigy! I only have 2 doctorates and a master....

I work for a very, very, very large, company. I wear many hats, but the main one is to "push" new technology. My company had and has polices supporting transgender employees. I am not the only one to have transition on the job. I have been in my real gender for over 2 years now..not a single problem...I am scheduled to be promoted this year or next year...I love my company and my job! :-*

@ those with humble jobs...I started as a farm laborer..next I graduate to automobile mechanic..etc. etc...."hold on to your dreamas" and never give up!!

@ those who do not belive it...sit on it... >:-)

I'm currently retired, so every day is Saturday for me now and I'm loving it! I've worn eleven different hats in my working lifetime, starting out as a house framer, a foreign car mechanic, truck driver, general contractor home builder, lumber and hardware center manager, independent property claims adjuster just to name a few from start to finish. I have always been quick to reinvent myself when I tired of one occupation.

If you choose not to believe me, that is your choice. I have nothing to prove to you.

That is smart. I could never understand why so many people will plaster absolutely every single detail of their life on the internet.

Friggin' morons.

You are absolutely right about not having to prove anything to anyone. Screw them.

Wish i had had the bravery to do what Carolina has done, 25 years ago.  You go girl !!!  We are all rooting for you !

This is a good question.  I work for a huge international software company based near San Francisco, for almost 10 years.  Pay's not great, but it's stable and pays the mortgage.  They _say_ they are GLBTQ-positive, but whether in reality... it remains to be seen and there's legal research that i still have to do, to be more sure of that.

Over the years opportunities surfaced, to go with smaller startups for more money; very tempting since there's a lot i could do with that money.  Now that i have started transition, i am so glad that i did not !

Cheers,
Karla

PS What is FFS ?   Sorry, newbie question, i need to find the glossary on this site.

Very interesting to see the huge variety of professions people are in. Difficult to see any particular sector stand out. I'm an engineer by training and have a  senior management position in a fairly large international engineering company. I have discussed my transition with my employers who, while very sympathetic, also considered that transitioning in such a high visibility position needed to be thought through very carefully.
We have carparked the subject for now and I try to juggle with living a double life, torn between the huge satisfaction I get from my job and the need to finally get closure on my gender identity issues.
Donna

P.S. Probably worth mentioning that I am post FFS and have long hair which I wear tied back at work. While I'm no beauty, my appearance is feminine enough for me to be frequently called "Madame" by third parties eg. at airport security, in restaurants, hôtels...even when dressed as a man.

I was a nurse and then a nurse anesthetist, CRNA, with a specialty in obstetrics until I retired.  Many people assumed I was therefore gay (I am BI).  Work roles are fraught with stereotypes.  I thoroughly enjoyed my career in a female dominated arena.  I have also worked in factories and in rough railroad jobs where men too often treated each other as competitors.  As a community activist I see predominantly women out volunteering and the real force for social change.

I started in a TV and radio repair shop when I was 13 and stayed in that field until just  before transition when I got into industrial maintenance for a year. I moved away, transitioned (and SRS), and worked in high-end audio repair for awhile before moving back into industrial electrical/electronics. Eventually I moved in to engineering and design and finished the last 30 years of my career in that capacity with a major utility. And I did it all as a girl when it was tough to be taken seriously!  ;)

I tried to transition on the job. I worked IT at a large LGBT friendly company. I came to my director and told him I was transgender and planned to transition in about 2 months. A month later I was laid off, about a month before I was to transition on the job. Of course they disguised it as "cut backs" but was really just a purge of the undesirables. They laid off about 10 people.  All the others laid off either had issues with attendance or productivity or had personality conflicts.  I never missed work, always on time, did a good job, never caused trouble.  So I find it hard to believe that me coming out didn't play a part. A lot of people were shocked when I was let go.  My cubemate, bless her heart, was so pissed she up and quit a week later because she was so disgusted by the management there.

Finding work after transition has been a bitch but I keep plugging away. Currently still unemployed.

I used to be in the flooring trades. I did that for about 10 years or so. I made pretty good money, but I knew it wasn't a field I could stay in if I ever wanted a real shot at transitioning. After that, I got into fabrication/assembly of products for the oil industry. Since then I've managed to do that position extremely well. I now design the product that I once assembled and fabricated.

When I do go full time/come out to everyone I will have to change companies for sure. I work with about 5 family members. Over the years they have let it be known that if they even knew someone was gay, they would find an excuse to fire them. Which is highly illegal and unethical. But the person that said that, is currently my boss. If and when I do come out to my employer and the rest of my family, I'm not really sure what is going to happen. Since I'm in california, they technically can't fire me for my gender identity. But, they will probably fire me for some other miniscule thing. The worst thing about it is, I'm great at my job. I love the people at the company a great deal. If I could, I would retire with the comapny. But, its the few bigots that are ruining it for me. They just happen to be my family members on top of it.It is still something that is holding my progress back.

That's unfortunate! You might just gather any awards and written commentary by your employers and document things from here on out as kind of a "what if" preemptory move just in case you need a little leverage in the future, as in worst case scenario, with documentation they might see their way clear to award a substantial severance if they feel it's necessary to terminate you. CYA!

I am a night auditor at a hotel. It is a near to no work, but pays close to minimum :/

Fortunately I live in very tourist spot, where the hotels business is constantly looking for people with experience so even if I get fired then finding another job would be a peace of cake :)

I'm way ahead of you on that front. About 6 months ago, I had a written job offer from a different company. In-turn, my current company gave me a written offer to match. (35% raise  :o ) They also stated in the letter the reason for my promotion and raise being that I have done an exceptional job since I was hired 5 years ago. They also took it upon themselves to announce to the company ,via E-mail, that I was a prime example of how they want to promote from within the company. It was a big deal because I was going from fabrication to design. An unheard of promotion in our company history. I also plan to come out just after a review that I have coming up in about 3 months. Thank you for the suggestion Auntie Shan, but I am already doing it! hehe

I work at a Hospital, all design work is through consultants and PE stamped.

I have a feeling most of the Transg* are FTM. I would estimate 90% female employees.  Females are in leadership and males are in subordinate roles, with the exception of 2 departments.

I'm an english customer service rep/internet sales/said website manager..kind of.. for an aftermarket LED company in Korea. The only native English speaker in the whole company, so I'm the person people talk to from around the world. I have a feeling I'm going to have to quit when THAT time comes.

I'm a former independent property claims adjuster and worked for three companies and their client companies simultaneously. Right now I would be headed for Moore, Oklahoma. I enjoyed helping people put their lives back together.

Wow, another truckdriver here.

We are everywhere :P

I do seriously want to get out of the field myself, but my experience is they care about performance way more than appearance, so that is a plus.

I don't really see that as a "low" job. As long as you are the best damn sign holder that you can be, it is an honest and respect worthy job. I mowed grass 15 years ago and made 60-70KK per year doing it. I worked my butt off then went into the real estate business for about 7 years.

I have to disagree with you there. It's hard to find passion in something that a billboard does just as well. In fact, billboards are better because they're full time 24/7. On a positive note though, I got a new job making camping equipment for a small, locally owned business! :D I make sooooo much more money there than I used to at my old job. I can now actually afford my transition. :')
