Title: Cosplay
Post by: Leo. on March 30, 2013, 12:37:50 PM
Anyone here into cosplay? I dont just mean yes or no answers, lets see some pictures  :)

I've done way too many characters to post, all of them videogame characters mainly Resident Evil, Assassin's Creed etc, so heres my DA which has most of them on there: http://zombiehunt3r.deviantart.com/ (http://zombiehunt3r.deviantart.com/)

Also if you do, why do you do it? Just for fun or a deeper reason? I do it cause its fun but also I think its because even just for a little while I want to pretend Im not me.. Pretending Im the character feels alot better. I cant identify with myself at all, my body is completely wrong. I've never seemed to not pass in a cosplay pic though which is good too. I have only ever been male characters, no interest at all in females as thats not what I am. I dont care if people cosplay as the opposite gender, people do that all the time who aren't trans so I dont think it even matters generally if you do it as your current gender or what you really are inside. Just gets me out of this situation psychologically for a little while I suppose. Once my body can be fixed though my costumes will look so much better on me too. Cant wait to get everything started, will be nothing but positives for once to gain from this

I used to do it a lot when I was in college (and pre-medical transitioning)!

But now I have neither the time nor effort to do it. But I love cosplaying. I love taking on a character and playing them even for a bit. It's not even about the dressing up to me. Now, I only can do it once in a blue moon-- I'm currently putting together a Thorin Oakenshield costume before the second Hobbit movie comes out.

I love dressing up and playing characters, etc. in general, and I've always wanted to cosplay, but never got through with it.
The closest to cosplaying was dressing up as one of my OC's (a guy as well. I needed an excuse to get some 'manly' stuff, lol )
But I still have a big list of characters I want to cosplay. It are mainly guys, but one or two girls too.
I'm not quite into anime though, and most cosplayers dress as anime characters. I'd rather dress as a book character, or something like that, as I love reading.

Anyone knows Skye? He looks pretty badass methinks. He is one of the chars I want to cosplay some day.

Me! *raises hand*
Glad to see I'm not the only one here!

I started cosplaying back in November 2009 and I'm totally in love with it! I've always been a geeky and artistic/creative person anyway so it's like the best hobby I could ever have hahah. I've met a lot of new amazing friends ever since I started cosplaying, some who are FtM just like me.

Here's a photo of me in cosplay:

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F4.bp.blogspot.com%2F-FQmvcG3CfiM%2FUZgQTWj-oKI%2FAAAAAAAAHSI%2FglMuibBcdVM%2Fs1600%2Fsam1403e.jpg&hash=e6943de45d57e4dcb62cb48ad7dd106e591e9978)

I also have a cosplay blog (http://valkoinensamurai.blogspot.com/) which I update quite frequently so feel free to become a Follower if you're interested! :)
I'm also to be found at deviantArt (http://chigami.deviantart.com/) and cosplay.com (http://www.cosplay.com/member/141062/).

I've always enjoyed other people's costumes at conventions but never had the courage to dress up myself unless it was Halloween. And even then only if it was something manly and comfortable.

These days now though even at 35 I feel like it might still be fun. ;)

We just went to Trotcon and my wife and I cosplayed Vinyl Scratch and Octavia (see user icon :P). It was her first time out in full woman mode and she did so well! She was definitely more at ease than I've seen her in, well, pretty much ever. She got mam'd once and some guy even hit on her!  ;D

Comfort is a funny thing with cosplay. Once I get into character, I can usually brush off criticism by reminding myself that I'm a character now. If a smartass gives me a hard time, I just do what my character would do. it's silly, but it works.

It should be noted that we cosplayed "humanized" versions of the ponies, as is popular to do in the fandom.

Nice to see some pics  :)  Good to see more are into this.  Unfortunately this can be quite an expensive hobby though which sucks. I really want to cosplay Loki but an average commission cost is around $600..

Completely agree with this. I feel alot more confident when Im in costume. I only do this in private right now but hope to get to a con one day. Acting like the character would is a good way of dealing with it and I would try to do so too. If it works all the better. Too many elitists in this domain who think they're wonderful and have a right to criticise everyone else and make fun of them. If anything its because they're insecure in themselves so they're not worth bothering about

Well, humanized ponies anyway. I'm not skilled enough to make a full suit for a pony cosplay, nor do I really want to. I like that the fandom is down with humanized pony characters

I love cosplay, even though unfortunately I have never cosplayed a female character. Most of my costumes have been military uniforms, my last venture was in a captain's mess dress uniform of the Royal Manticoran Navy.

Right now I'm on the fence. I could be an outstanding Major from Hellsing at this point, although at my present rate of weight loss I could possibly pull of a decent Roy Mustang by Project A-kon next year (assuming I pass on HRT, and that's a big assumption at this point!). Or on the other hand, I might be able to pull of a reasonable, if matured Koyomi Mizuhara from Azumanga Daioh, or I could be delusionally optimistic.

I guess you could say, I'm trying to decide on my swan song for my male cosplay and my debut for female cosplay... or whether to debut at all. I'm certainly not getting any younger.... but the cosplayers are!

The hand looks a little fake here but solved my problem of how to make the finger point. Its a cast of a screen used prop. I have nearly the full costume now for his different costumes. All Im missing to complete the motorcycle cop variant is the LAPD helmet. I have all the clothing items but they are with my gf right now. This is all I have here right now to use. The camera doesnt show my badges well at all but they look really nice in person. Hoping to go to a con one day as T-1000. My gf may also be TX  :P

I certainly dont have Robert's body but Im working on it. Already lost about 8kg in the past few months. I know everything will fit me so much better once I can have top surgery too. Just going to take awhile but hopefully one day I'll get there.. Not exactly claiming to look like him, just fun to cosplay

Heh I've cosplayed a few times in the past and before coming out I used to "joke" about crossplaying but never followed through with it until now.  I figured it would be a safe environment to try going out in public as a girl.

I went with Celty from Durarara since she has a big helmet and the whole cosplay was fairly easy to make and I could show off some curves... And well she doesn't talk so no worries about trying to make my voice pass  :embarrassed: I had no idea how revealing it would feel when I went to a convention dressed up. Despite feeling a lot more naked (for lack of a better term) than I expected it was overall an amazing experience and I did have a lot of fun and it was definitely a feeling I wanted to keep going.

Here's a few pics my friend snagged when she got me to play around with poses:

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F31.media.tumblr.com%2Fcce2fb8ba9d2448fb595796ff08d849e%2Ftumblr_myycnhesWx1seygpxo7_1280.jpg&hash=9caa47d78774b772d410d0615267f535bded5763) (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F25.media.tumblr.com%2F7eae892cb497d5cf3779bc09259c6a53%2Ftumblr_myycnhesWx1seygpxo4_1280.jpg&hash=a7a20c18b822a7ac01516d7907c1a1c590509b7a)

My next cosplay I wanna do is Bridget from Guilty Gear as my non hiding behind a helmet cosplay.  While it's a character that is a guy who's cross dressing I want to see how well I can get make up looking to see if I could pass as a woman.  For now at least it seems like the perfect idea since if I don't pass it still works for the cosplay, if I do pass then well big win :D

I know that no one has written in this thread for a while but I'd really like to get it active again!

I'd be curious to hear if any of you attend anime conventions and if you do, which ones? ;D
Personally I always try to attend Tracon in Finland and Skecon in Sweden because these are among my current favorite events! One day I really want to go to cons in other European countries as well as cons in USA and Japan! Japan Expo in Paris is one of those that I plan to attend in a near future, it seems so huge and awesome!

Oh and I also want to give a thumbs up and mention that I've fairly recently made a cosplay page over at Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/ShiroSamuraiCosplay), so all cosplay fans who feel interested can go and like me over there to follow my cosplay adventures! :D

Yes. A funny thing is that the current president of my country (Park Geun-hye, S. Korea) does the cosplay of the president, not the duties of the president. The following photo appeared in her facebook cover last year for a kind of thanksgiving day:

im generally too poor to be tossing money into a costume, but in spite of that, i have a working Joker costume (purple jacket, vest, green hairspray, sloppy clown makeup), a white hoodie (assassin desmond ?), and, partials for a star trek borg, and a star wars mandalorian... the latter two of which i may never finish.

What? Perfectionists are the best cosplayers actually cause they actually care about what they're doing, unlike throwing a bucket on your head and calling it a costume. An eye for detail makes the best costumes, they are the most accurate looking and shows the person cares about what they're doing. That was a stupid thing to say its so the opposite

I am a perfectionist, if its not as close as I can get it then its not good enough for me. I have more place in it than people who dont care do. I dont have the skill to make my own costumes, I dont even know how to sew.. but anything I buy/commission has to be the best I can find. Yes its expensive to do that and I understand those who use cheaper costumes and stuff if they cant afford it Im not putting them down. I just hate this attitude that its bad to be good..? No it isnt. Being a perfectionist doesnt mean you never finish anything, another myth. I might not get things 100% perfect but I know when I've done the best I can and I leave it at that. Why should you let someone with that attitude stop you from doing something. People who act that way just come across as jealous to me. Cant do something themself so they try prevent anyone else from doing it too

I've found some items on amazon that will make a halfway decent approximation of a Pokemon XY Sabrina costume. The hat is made specifically for a costume for her. I found a skirt that was almost a perfect match, but the comments all said it runs small and so a large wouldn't work. I'll probably be ordering everything in the next couple of paychecks.

Cosplay is a lot of fun, though a bit too expensive for me at the moment. I only have two costumes that I wear to conventions. I have an Attack on Titan costume (with a full set of 3D maneuver gear I made myself), and a 10th Doctor outfit from Doctor Who. The latter of the two was more expensive, since I didn't make it and the jacket was rather expensive.

I'd love to be able to do more cosplay in the future. Especially female characters (I think my Attack on Titan could be adapted quite easily for that, but for now I don't have the money to do anything new.

I might be taking my Doctor Who cosplay to Denver Comic Con next month. It depends on how hot it gets over there by then. A full wool overcoat that weighs like 7 or 8 pounds can be pretty awful in the summer.

It can be expensive thats a problem with it. Easier if you can make parts yourself to save costs

the Winter Soldier (Captain America):

Shirt is a stand in for now until I can get the proper parts. Can get the jacket and arm but not the vest, need to find someone to commission that

Upgraded Loki now I have armour parts

Im also terrible at getting wigs to sit right on me so need to work on that

Garry,

Where do you find all the stuff for your outfits? They seem quite extensive so I'm curious where you find the materials? Do you fabricate them all or are they pre-made costumes?

Your Loki is great by the way.

I decided to try something new for Denver Comic Con. I found a hat and trench coat at a thrift shop that I think will work perfectly for a Rorschach costume from Watchmen. I just need to use some Rit Dye to turn them the right shade of brown. I also found this really neat stuff called thermo-dynamic dye that reacts to the heat of your breath. I think with the right application I can give my mask the illusion of having moving inkblots  ;D

The best part is, assuming I can find a cheap material that I can see through for the mask, I should be able to complete the whole outfit for less than $40.

I wish I could make my own stuff.. I have no skill at all for that. My gf can help me make costumes when she's here though and hopefully I might be able to learn how to do it. I buy stuff premade as I cant do it myself. Ebay is the best place to find anything, I get nearly everything off there. Auctions can be helpful you can sometimes get lucky and win something cheaper. My current Loki costume is just the cheap Rubies one for now. I want to commission a much better quality one some day when I have the money for it, it is like $600 to commission and I cant do it just now so this £30 odd one was a fine option for now. Just added the armour parts I won on ebay to upgrade it a bit

I make money to buy more stuff from selling things I dont want anymore and saving the money in my paypal account, like exchanging one thing for another really. I have loads of stuff from multiple collections I've had over the years so if I need money I sell some of it off to source something else with. Im pretty good at making profits on things I bought so spending money to make money in the long term. Everything I paid for can be later sold on

I want to learn how to make things like armour myself at least. I can make helmets and stuff using the papercraft method but its very extensive to do them that way and requires a lot of work so its not an ideal option. I got my Loki helmet off ebay, it was the best one I'd seen so I had to have it. Used money I had saved in my paypal account to buy that. Mostly it just takes looking around until you find the right parts to work with. Etsy is another good place for homemade items. It ends up coming down to expense so if I cant afford something I leave it for later when I can get it or find a cheaper alternative. It would be fine if it was just one costume but when I do so many different characters the price really adds up. Sometimes I can reuse stuff from other costumes though which helps. It doesnt help when Im a perfectionist and want every part to be 100% accurate or Im not happy lol

That is another way, finding suitable stuff in charity shops. Have to get really lucky for that though as you cant choose sizes or anything there. But its always good when you find something that will work perfectly for something. That sounds like a very interesting idea, never heard of that dye before. Some pics of that would be cool  :P I hope that works out, good way of doing it for a reasonable price too

Black top with red hat/skirt. It is contrasting and unconventional, but my favorite combination of colors.

Super cute  ;D

I loved all of the female costume options in X/Y. My cousin used to make fun of me because I spent more time trying to figure out how to get into that French clothing boutique in the game than I did actually collecting Pokemon haha.

Nice job recreating the outfit.

I put no effort into cosplay usually because I don't have time to so usually I cp as homestuck characters because they're very easy to pull off. I also have a few outfits that remind me of wes anderson characters, like a Team Zissou outfit, or kristofferson the fox.
But I think this is the only cosplay i'm super proud of, which i did for a halloween party.

So my costume is out of date. I did not see this coming. Ash is the only character to have ever changed clothes permanently and that only happens when the cast changes. I guess I should have though since changing clothes is part of the games now.

Dark Pit from Kid Icarus, first cosplay I made entirely on my own:

Kanda Yuu from D.Gray-Man. Made the sword, thats about it:

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc07.deviantart.net%2Ffs70%2Fi%2F2012%2F253%2F3%2F4%2Fthoughtfull_by_shadowyazoo-d5eay9s.jpg&hash=0dcf116fa6861d7a39250f4f05d056f7c4942467)

Riku from KH, this was my favorite prop to make (I no longer have it ;-;):
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc07.deviantart.net%2Ffs71%2Ff%2F2013%2F151%2F3%2Ff%2Ffor_my_friends_by_shadowyazoo-d67bnl8.jpg&hash=6169d749dcfbf50f1ad512d7e2803a3918335df9)

I cosplay because characters I get to portray represent me in some way or another. Also the community in general is supportie and I made quite a few friends through it.

The cosplays I really want to do right now are Rita Mordio and The Stig.

I try to cosplay whenever I get the chance (be it at cons or not), though my attempts re rather lacking  :-\ I prefer to use bought clothes for cosplays and modify them, although  have started making my own. This year I've completed 5 costumes, and am currently working on another 7 ^_^ Here's a picture of my latest finished work, Bandit Keith from Yu-Gi-Oh!  ;D

Just wanted to tell everyone here that I've made a Facebook cosplay page for not so long ago. :) Feel free to take a look! https://www.facebook.com/ShiroSamuraiCosplay/ (https://www.facebook.com/ShiroSamuraiCosplay/)
I've been cosplaying since late 2009 and it has helped me a lot through tough times and with finding myself. I'm really happy I started with this hobby, even though it's expensive and hasn't always been perfect.
