Going back a page I see...
I can spot my basses! I have two 1973 4001s. :) I have an SD Curleee here that I'm doing work on (I'm a luthier).
I have too many basses and guitars, and amps... I'm starting to sell some of them to help finance my transition...
Wow, I'm a bass player and luthier as well. You will pry my '64 P-Bass from my cold, dead hands!
I didn't realize how many musicians we had around here.

I can't remember where I saw it, but I've read an article previously saying there seemed to be a higher propensity for certain traits amongst trans people, musicianship and programming were on the list of abilities that are present in a higher percentage of trans people than cis peeps.
There maybe nothing to it, but I'm currently figuring out using Swing to create GUI's for java apps (been spoiled by Visual Studio) and play a fair few stringed instruments (guitar, bass, ukulele and even giving banjo a go :))

Interesting. I was having conversation with my psychiatrist about this sort of thing. Apparently we also overrepresented in aviation and art, run left-handed and have more of a propensity for ADD, while running 20+ IQ points above average. I personally won't even get aboard an aircraft, but the rest applies to me. My current houseguest is trans and a commercial pilot though, so go figure...
My counsellor says there's apparently a tendency for many trans people to be involved in geek culture...? That's got me pegged!
I'm a bit of a geek as well--computer nerd, gamer, and artist.

Yeah, I think that it's due to
a) The escapism factor (taking you away from the real life that you consciously/sub-consciously know it wrong for you)
b) Geek culture used to be on the outskirts of society, you had a legitimate reason to not "fit in" with people perceived as your peers.
c) The ability to excel in something while avoiding stereotypical male past times (I don't need to be good at sport when I grok object orientation!)

I'm a total comic, sci-fi and fantasy geek... ;D
Escapism has been a major survival technique for me.
I can see us derailing this here thread, any chance a mod can move this conversation to its own thread at all?
The trait list got me. I was a Paramedic/Firefighter, flew a Piper Tomahawk and Cessna 152 and played brass instruments in Drum Corps. It does make one wonder, doesn't it?
Really? Lets see: Left-handed, keyboard & piano player, also dabbled in banjo and b->-bleeped-<-ipes, amateur radio operator, licensed pilot (single engine land), R/C helicopter pilot, entire career in science & technology, micro-electronic designer, 10 years professional programmer (before PCs!), geeky (but hate comic books and games), skin diver, honours student, hi IQ, astronomy, target sports, figure skater, writer, antique machinery (farm & construction) buff & restorer, model builder, photography, used to sing, draw comic strips .... and probably a bunch more than I have forgotten.
Let's see... Programmer (trending towards artistic interests/worldbuilding), nerdy, apparently high IQ (based on that one test I took years ago), ADD tendencies, plastic models... Not a leftie, though.
I'm inclined to think most of this is as a result of ->-bleeped-<-, rather than comorbidities. Escapism and similar.

Daaaamn... it's amazing how much in common we all have.
I've played piano, have my amateur radio license (legacy Advanced license), electrical engineer, programmer, geek, RPG gamer (once upon a time), semi-pro student, individual sports (swimmer), reader & writer, photographer, singer...
and much much more.
I also homebrew (or did before the diet)
This is a interesting topic. I thin it touches on the old debate of nature verses nurture. So let's see how my hobbies ad interests stack up, shall we?
Right handed. (I don't thik this is related to transness.)
My I.Q. as tested I highschool is apparently 139.
I played nearly every sport as a child. Made all-stars I baseball 4 years in a row.
I skateboarded for about 7 years. I had sponsers interested when I stopped.
In highschool I was in the engineering club and art club.
I watch a ton of anime and sci-fi.
Played a to of video games. (Ranked 3rd nationally in quake 3)
First time I went to college I earner a BA in web design with a minor in 3d animation.
Currently employed as an Electricall Designer. Working on my E. Engieerig degree and my industrial drawing degree.
My latest hobby/passion is cooking.

Personally, I think this stuff is 95% nurture, but a nurture that's directly related to being transgender. We don't feel like we fit into normal society, so we gravitate toward fringe activities, geeky things, individual sports, etc.
I have heard that we tend to be more intelligent, on average... so I assume there's at least
some nature basis
It doesn't look like any list made it to this new thread, but isn't what was previously aspergers and autism-spectrum neuro-atypicality also higher in trans populations?
I'm a concept artist, cartoonist, worldbuilder and amateur linguist. Long time gamer; as a kid I would invent games and board games and things. Hated team sports with a passion, still do, but I've taken to skin diving and kayaking since my formative years. I do love me some physics and astronomy and most of the -ologies too, but my brain has a really hard time grasping most logic systems. It makes me mostly useless in arguments.
Community organizing and logistics is mostly where my technical side shines when it comes to practical matters.
Hrm... I play sax, dabble in painting and drawing, am a systems architect (can program on at least seven different computing platforms from mainframes to cellphones in at least 25 different languages), love fantasy/sci fi, have been told I'm extremely intelligent (and looking around at others of my "peers" at least where I live, I'm apt to believe it), tinker with electronics, love puzzles...
I am right handed, though. :P
It has been said that "Genius makes its own rules". Perhaps nature plays a role here. It would be far easier to take orders from society and fit into our slots, however uncomfortably. Perhaps there are many more transgendered people in all areas of society, but many lack the imagination or ability to see themselves as something other than society dictates?
That doesn't mean that trans people are better or more creative than non-trans... it just means that those few who actually identify as trans and are willing to work against society to transition have additional assets that help them to do so.
Maybe as society becomes more tolerant and information becomes more widely available, people will come out of the woodwork and the trans community (and societal acceptance) will increase proportionately.
Dare to dream. :)

Interesting. I have had an obsession with aviation since I was young, love art (but sadly cannot make it,) am mixed handed, being tested for ADHD (not covered by my insurance so it'll cost me upwards of$500, which I don't have) and have A high IQ, although I feel like a blundering idiot most times. I'm an awful musician though.

I just wrote a computer program in Ruby that plays every pitch in a scale of an arbitrary number of notes. ;) My favorite hobbies in general are programming, watching anime, and fighting/music games. I have an IQ of between 150 and 160 (depending on which test you believe). But I am right handed. I agree that being transgendered tends to lead toward building a life around escapism. If you hate being yourself, you're going to look for anything you can do that allows you to live outside of that identity. Additionally, hating who you are has a way of giving you an inferiority complex, which can make you hypercompetetive about everything you do.
A lot of the stuff in the list is correlated on its own with a high IQ, transgender or not: left handedness, tech jobs, aviation jobs, musical training, ADD, etc.

...which makes a lot of sense. We all know (I hope) that being transgender doesn't directly affect your interests.
so if trans* is correlated with high IQ and social withdrawal... pretty much everything else falls into place.
Interestingly:
Many mass murderers and serial killers have an extraordinarily high IQ.
Mass murderers are often loners who have very few social connections.
Most mass murderers are single or divorced.
Most serial killers had troubled childhoods
There is a higher percentage of left handed serial killers than compared to the general public
So from that, I hypothesize, if you have these characteristics and are born in a male body, there are two paths, murder or transition!

Only if you're immortal
High Functioning ASD-GID people will appear to be the most intelligent people you will ever meet.
Why?
ASD person by definition will desire social isolation. Non-ASD people ("Neurotypicals" i.e., neurologically typical "NT" as the ASD people call "normal" people) invest a substantial part of their lives in socializing with others, spending time with others, or helping others. While the ASD person will spend their lifetime engrossed in their own interests. If these interests are intellectual or academic, then that is a substantial difference between these people (one person spends say a cumulative fifteen years of time socializing with others, while the other person say reads technical books for fifteen years, and develops none of the social skills).
I have met one ASD-Trans person and she was the CTO of an internet company. I met another one that is a manager of software development at a software company. I work for the federal government as a patent examiner at the Patent & Trademark Office. I met another one online at google groups "Trans PDD" that works where I work.
I say appear because these people have a limited occupational area in which they can be successful, and their social skills are likely to be very low.
Murg... I hate it when I conform to a stereotype... but since my title pretty much says it anyway...
Geekdom:
-Played Magic: the Gathering competitively, plus D&D, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon
-Video game player
-Long-time member of choirs. LOVE singing!
-Played violin for a few years in school, plus took piano lessons
-Total anime nerd.
-Have been writing my own fantasy novel since I was 15.
Nerdery:
-President of the math club and the science club in high school
-Scored in the top 10 in the county in math every single year of high school from Geometry to Calc, including a 1st-place in pre-calc.
-Won two engineering competitions... one for building a trebuchet out of balsa wood, the other for designing a boat out of K'nex.
-IQ of 135+ according to every test I've taken. (My mom won't tell me the actual number that I scored, because she says that it would make me develop a superiority complex. :P)
-Was an engineering major for most of my high school and college life
-Spent a good portion of high school writing programs for my graphing calculator. I even started programming my own RPG on it.
-Countless hours spent designing virtual roller coasters in No Limits Coaster, often using calculus and trig in order to do so, which not a lot of people do. (most designers just drag around the Bezier-curve control points.)
Not left-handed, though, and don't have ADD as far as I know. (That diagnosis wasn't popular yet when I was a school kid in early-90s rural Ohio, so I thankfully escaped it.) But definitely trans. The further in transition I go, the more and more I'm realizing just how bad I had it back in high school. It's a wonder that I accomplished all that I did considering how much emotional turmoil I was undergoing every single day due to gender issues.
I am not especially musical, don't play an instrument and the only programming language I understand to any degree is how to record a movie on my Sky Plus box... so... yeah, lol.
Not gonna comment on the IQ thing. I don't think those tests are accurate. At least in my case. I'm dumber than a box of rocks, even though they say otherwise.
Wow, I love how this thread blew up whilst I was away. Very interesting and educational.
Although I freak out on airplanes, I did have simulators and R/C planes when I was a kid and built models. I guess I was pretty nerdy before I turned into a stoner metalhead. I never got into gaming though. A bit of D&D in junior high, but that was about it. I still love Star Trek.
I also didn't realize that I could have just as easily been a serial killer. Good thing I transitioned before that happened. >:-)

Were you programming it in assembly? I only ever learned how to program in BASIC on those things, and that had some pretty serious limitations. My crowning achievement was that I actually wrote a playable clone of Space Invaders using the graphing functions to draw pixels. The downside was that I could only display two enemies at a time, and the game ran at about one frame per second. :D
I had wondered about this subject for a while.
I'm right handed, very smart and can do many amazing things with my hands. I also play guitar and was once a very good artist. I loved drawing landscapes and animals. I also have ADHD. I can't stand to drive a car with an automatic transmission because of the ADHD. Having to shift gears and dance on the pedals is so much fun! I also love anime, I actually watch more of it than regular TV.
I do recall being fairly adept with computer programming and drawing once upon a time, but that all got supplanted by music and partying, as I found I liked getting more attention from the ladies. I do build my own circuits for guitar FX and amps sometimes and can wire/rewire a guitar without much thought.
I haven't tried to draw anything since college, as I knew too many "real" artists then that made my work look like it was drawn by a kindergartener. I was WAY better at music anyway...
It's so nice to know I'm much less of a freak than I originally thought.

*giggle* To me, that's a large part of the joy of being here at Susan's... I'm used to being a freakish person wherever I am, often the "smartest" in the room (but with little common sense, way more important than IQ to me). Here, I don't feel that way much at all. So much to learn from and share with my sisters and brothers.
I also just discovered that it was quite possible that during childhood I had oppositional defiant disorder, which often comes in a package with the ADHD :P. Also, according to WIKI (which as is, of course, highly questionable as an authoritative source..) individuals with high IQ and ADHD have a lowered risk of substance abuse - which was pretty much me. I never did any drugs, plus I just cant smoke - my body does not tolerate tobacco. And if I overdose alcohol, then I just get sick and I cant touch it for months afterwards.

No, I actually was just programming it in basic. Which is one of the reasons why I never finished it, because of the limited variables available, and the sheer amount of time involved. But I did figure out on a basic level how to store player stats, how to roll for random encounters, how to program a map into it, and how to level up and learn new skills and whatnot. Again, I never even came close to finishing it. I maybe got done with 2 tiles worth of the map, after like 20 hours of work, before I finally said "f*** this" and gave up.

You know, we need more women coders, and programing languages have gotten a *lot* better over the years, with online tutorials and ways you can run stuff on your system right away to play with it. If, you know, you have some spare time. Just sayin'. :)
Come to the dark side, dear, we have cookies with multiple inheritance and polymorphism. And you can instantiate as many chocolate chips as you want! :)

Totally. Personally, I'm all about Ruby. When I first started programming in it I couldn't believe that someone had finally made a language where things that should be easy were easy, and everything followed a consistent set of rules. Now I won't program in anything else unless I have to (which is unfortunately a lot more of the time than I'd like).
Right on, sister! Rails are optional. :)
Although I must admit I'm also a bit of a PERL girl. ;)
I like Ruby! Rails not so much... but mainly Chunky Bacon!!
Right now I'm working in Tcl and Java. I mostly hate Tcl...
C# is my language of choice - it's what I did my thesis in (a network simulator).
I would say that everyone assumes I would be a major geek for all these things. While I'm smart enough to show interest in much of it I was never smart enough to be really good at any of it. Also everyone assumes I'd be crazy into gaming and RPGs but I never was. I have flown a plane. I'm right-handed. I prefer to learn and experiment rather than socialize. Most of the things I have learned and will learn will likely go with me to the grave because I spend so little time sharing them with others.
If anything I more have a thirst for knowledge and I'm good with physical technical things and designing/constructing mechanical projects. I appreciate being in the company of people like all of you who have different intellectual gifts because my own skills can complement yours to create significantly more sophisticated things as a group than I can achieve alone. I need people who are more socially 'normative' to help me bridge my social gap but I would most like to find smart people I can get along with that I can just be my smart self with and learn and create with. Also, I desperately need a smart and non-social-obsessive girlfriend!
I don't know how I fit into the mold, I kinda threw out the book on trans tendencies at 14 when I was reading my parent's nursing books to try to confirm to myself I was not transgendered (see! I don't have those symptoms... all the while ignoring all the ones I did!)
However, I am a big time Geek/Nerd. My IQ is 163-147 (I don't feel particularly brilliant :-\)I've been tabletop roleplaying since I was 14, a voracious sci-fi reader, captain of my high school quiz bowl team, published poet, played the saxophone and the organ (no jokes please.. ;)), ran the Anime club at my university with an iron fist in my first stint as an undergrad, amateur brewer, amateur chef, and very much right handed... :)
There's a lot about IQ on here...
I don't know my IQ, but being lazy certainly drops it 20 points ;) Luckily that may still put me above average (at least as far as work reviews go ;)).
I'm not that lazy. I am feeling really lazy lately, though - with all I'm going through.

It is reported that The Unabomber went to a doctor for a "sex change".
He looks to be an autistic-GID person.
Autism mixed with GID. If untreated, a sure combination to produce a monster. I know.
I was talking to my therapist about this subject once and she said that the computer industry is filled with trans people LOL....
I've been coding for almost 30 years, A lot of what I know is self taught; I have always been able to pick things up quickly. Assembly, JCL, device programming with SCSI, Windows programming, Unix, C, C#, C++ and so on.
I'm also ADD, the older I get the worse it is. I now have to take a pill in the morning to get my mind to focus, otherwise it's daydreaming all day long and no work gets done.
I have always wanted to learn a musical instrument since I felt that I could play.
I'm right handed although my dad is a lefty.
It's always interesting to me to read threads about this.
It's kind of ironic that I'm reading this when I should be programming my Android app for work. This is more interesting. :) Yup, I'm a software doobie for most of the last 30 years. Got a math degree too, but can't remember any of it. Not left handed but use to goofy foot skateboards, and prefer that way when windsurfing. I'm a bit of a hack on the piano as well. So I guess I fit the mold too.
Hm. Let's see...
1. I have had an I.Q. of 125 since high school (an I.Q. of 125 is comparable to having a natural intelligence of a grad student in college if I understand correctly)
2. I'm currently working toward a secondary art education degree because I want to teach and I want to use art to teach critical thinking to students, and I want to try to find new ways to do this.
3. I'm artistic (Specifically good at painting. My current instructor has suggested I take advanced oil painting, something that usually isn't allowed for someone only going for an art education major).
4. I have Attention deficit disorder without hyperactivity (a more common version of ADD in women)
5. I'm a bit of a geek (Star Wars, Star Trek, and MMOs all the way until the day I die!)
6. I'm terrible at math. Despite being in the top 20% of my class at the moment and in an honors society (Kappa Delta Pi, Albert Einstein was also in this honor society) I recently failed College Algebra and am well on my way to do the same with Intro to Statistics.
7. Because of #6, I'm starting to suspect I have issues with Dyscalculia as despite being intelligent and good at every subject thrown at me in school from an early age, I have never been good at math despite working very hard at it for years.
8. I used to play clarinet. I could play the instrument quite well, and could play music after listening to it and play small songs made up by myself. However ... I could never figure out how to read the music notes, making playing even basic scales difficult. I nearly had a nervous breakdown over that during a test in band.
9. I love to keep my house clean (...and hate that since I'm a full time student and seem to be the only one who knows how to use a broom and a sponge in my house, that my house has become a disaster area since the start of the semester).
10. I'm right handed.
I am...
Right handed, but eat left handed, am ambidextrous archer and in batting.
IQ tested from 130 through 180 depending on the test- last was 145.
Program in unity java, c+, mayascript, maxscript and basic.
Work in video games, film and roleplaying games. Paint, sculpt and collect minis.
Extremely good at spatial puzzles.
Obsessive compulsive traits. Perfectionist.
Pitch perfect. Play guitar, piano and kazoo.
Have yet to become serial killer. I do go through cereal and murder cups of tea.
Had a flying lesson once- pilot said I was a natural.
Creepy huh?
Hmm. I think there is a strange coincidence here.
High IQ, last one 160+ Scary.
Work in Finance in Performance and Analytics, numbers all day.
Puzzles are a doddle.
Love Sci-Fi
Yes also a perfectionist as well.
National level at sports and even represented Australia.

As a perfectionist I have failed in my previous post because I failed to mention I'm also a perfectionist. Damn...
I am a perfectionist too - which comes great together with the ADHD and leads to outbursts of GAD (or maybe that's not a disorder, because I have ascendant Virgo in my birth chart which gives the lovely trait to worry about all things in the world) :P.
I've been playing the electric guitar since I was 15 (been through 8 guitars.) Became a published author in 2000 (3 books published) and I enjoy drawing and reading.
Wow, this is really interesting! ^-^ There are a lot of common interests here, except that I don't understand nothing about programming and hated maths!
I don't remember my IQ and I am too lazy now to take the test again, but I remember it was above the average
I play the violin
I love to draw
I am right handed except when eating; my father was left-handed
I am kind of a perfectionist
I love sci-fi, specialy Star Trek; I love anime/manga
I love games and spent a good 4 years playing World of Warcraft (still miss my Death Knight!)

Highly creative kind of like MacGyver I suppose, expressive too sometimes. Tore all of my toys apart and put them back together.
IQ over 150 but don't feel that smart. Struggle with math and language. Never been tested as ADD but I think so. Concentration is not something that I have.
Love all of these posts. Very interesting topic.

It seems like a lot of common things here
I can do some programming Basic, Visual Basic, debug C code.
Use linux a lot although still learning, can setup a web and email server and did in middle school about 20 years ago the first time.
Leftie
Love Star Trek and most scfi.
Which reminds me.... kinda a different topic or maybe a poll but how many of us liked Choose your own adventure books?
I loved them along with How things work and just about anything on technology I could get my hands on
Spend nearly all of my free time reading. Play RPG's offline like Skyrim although I haven't in awhile.

I get you with the IQ thing. Mine is 142, less than 1% of the population, but I feel like a complete idiot and may be set to fail a critical class this semester if I can't get 100% in everything left.
Same with drawing, I'm pretty much adextrous. Even with a mouse, I'm as uncoordinated with it in the left hand as the right. I've always had people ask if I'm Asperger's or something, which I've always contemplated, but moving schools and states so often I never got any attention for it if I do.

LOL also. If we put our minds together, we can rule the world. >:-)
As for me....
- Fairly high IQ. Advanced degree in one of the sciences.
- Left handed.
- Was good at art, music (vocals), and sports in high school but gave it all up to become a complete science nerd.
- Probable ADD/ADHD never been formally diagnosed.
- Computer gaming, cooking, big outdoors person, would love to play guitar some day.
- Not the biggest fantasy geek, escapism, etc. (Clearly one of my weaknesses!)

MacGyver! Yesss. I totally get it. I once fixed a '69 Camaro with a guitar string, a coat hanger and a cigarette butt after the throttle cable snapped.
Plus I make/modify a lot of my own luthier's tools. You don't get into fixing guitars unless you have a major MacGyver streak.
Wow! This is a great post. Let me add my two cents.
I worked in the financial sector for 24 years.
An electronics technician for 11 years.
Taught myself the basics of Microsoft Powerpoint.
I write poetry, short stories, essays, and commetaries.
Love computers, horror stories, football, music, and lighthouses.
The only thing I do left handed is swing a bat. ;D
Iq I don't remember but was always quoted very intelligent in the reading and comprehension areas of tests
I was born left hand but due to some "experiences" I was forced to retrain as a right hander (might explain some things x.x)
I love to sing and make music with pots, pans, and random things. Used to play a guiter upside down (played left) but learning became too difficult. Dabbled in piano and was even given piano in high school.
I love doing all types of tests. Spatial test was mentioned here. I had to take these tests for a therapy session and the therapist was blown away, but eh.
Suck at math but do have spurts where I practice my basics except percents.
Definitely draw mostly when upset, aabstracts, and various male images of myself. Tried painting. I don't understand it yet so I stopped.
I love fixing things. Enjoy taking things apart and have no trouble putting them together unless I broke it down too far. I begged my dad for a mechanics book for my lawnmower years ago and it gave me the extra confidence for fixing or atleast finding what's wrong.
Flying? Na. But if I watch too much Swat Katz I get the urge to be a jet fighter pilot in the heat of the moment :/
Edit: Oh and I forgot I can back a car up like no one's business...but i sure don't park straight forward.
I've come to think of it; since the trend is for transpeople to have higher intelligence, perhaps said intelligence allows us to peer inside us and discover what is truly happening inside our own brains and bodies, so we question our findings unlike most, who would just pass it by.
While everybody has definitely shown they are indeed very bright, they're lots of types of intelligence.
IQ tests are interesting no doubt, but they're only tests that touch on certain parts of smarts, not the whole spectrum.
If you've taken a psychology class in college you may have learned about things like Artistic intelligence, Social intelligence, Musical intelligence, Logical intelligence etc..
They're all equally as important, and it's okay to lack one and have another. :)
I agree with Willow, maybe trans people tend to analyze ourselves and others more than non-trans folks.
My IQ is like 118 btw lol.
Professional Drummer, Have played 40 years
Severe Social Anxiety, Hate crowds, anything involving interacting with strangers - (except when I'm on stage playing, I can't explain that)
Inability to concentrate on things like math, but can surf the internet for a whole day easily w/o getting bored
Easily stressed out
Feelings of not being in control
Prone to road rage
Hate any and all type of sports
Feel like I have an itch that I can never scratch
Looking at Marieee's post:
Logical intelligence - very high
Musical Intelligence - High
Artistic Intelligence - Average
Social Intelligence - 0, unless it's allowed to be a negative number :)

When the revolution comes I'd like a small island, please! ;D
Ambidextrous (i still cant figure out which hand i want to open the damn door with)
Play guitar/bass righty
Used to make dubstep and electronic music
Always wanted to be a game programmer(never got the cash for college)
I play quake everyday since 1996. Love RPG's too.

Love sci-fi,
I exhibit some asd tendencies,
Engineer, PE and love science ( I spent a lot of time doing personal experiments to prove my personal science hypothesis),
Left hand for speed and right for beautiful writing, but slower.
IQ unknown
love to fly, especially little air craft but only as a passenger.
until HRT I was antisocial now I am becoming social :)
extremely creative
I am stuck on the words "why" and "how" for mechanical systems. It drives me nuts until I understand how something works.
Sooo neat how many programmers there are...
My programming timeline starts 15 years ago with basic, then assembly, javascript, arduino c, and most recently python. I also do html and css but I avoid it like the plague. Programming is a part of my day job in animation programs... After Effects + Cinema 4D. I've been modeling and animating 3D for 15 years as well.
I come from a musical family so I dunno if it counts (especially because my mom was a music teacher).. I play piano (classical), alto sax (jazz), french horn (symphonic), mellophone (when I was in ohio state marching band), and guitar. I used to be avid about singing, and I have perfect pitch- which has proven very handy for female voice training :)
Not much in terms of ambidextrousness, I'm a right hander.
Mechanical, audio engineering, led light sculptures and fabrication are probably my favorite past times outside of my day job. I just ordered a gigabot 3D printer and I'm anxiously awaiting its shipment!
With all the musicians here, how many are in Los Angeles/SoCal and want to jam just for fun in the new year?
Warning: I like classic metal! \m/ (-|-) \m/
I can do rock, hard rock, classic rock or blues as well. I'm not much of a jazzer though, I'm afraid.

My turn! ^_^
I'm still in High school so I haven't done quite as many interesting things as a lot of you have. Here goes anyway! ^_^
At school I'm considered smart. Honors and AP classes (despite the fact that I hate being in them.) My least favorite classes are math and science, and my favorite non-electives are history and language arts! I go to a performing arts school, where I enjoy music, dancing, and acting classes (and hopefully stage tech in the next year).
I love to write! And I'm good at it. Poetry, fiction, thoughts and deep sayings, you name it. My absolute favorite stories to write and to read are fantasy and sci-fi (especially fantasy).
I am a musician. I've been playing drums for about 7 years now, and other mallet percussion instruments for about 4. I'm currently enrolled in a music composition class. I was in an indie rock band for a little over a year.
I'm an anime fan! This one might be out there but I've noticed some peoples avatars and it seems like I'm not alone.
I'm super connected with nature. Very outdoorsy. I consider myself more in tune with the natural world than most.
Okay, this one I'll be really surprised if any of you have this in common, I'm a circus girl.
Yep ^_^ Aerial Silks, German Wheel, Unicycling, Juggling, Stilt Walking, Hoop Dancing, Poi Spinning, the works. ;)
And that's all for me! ^_^ I'm sure there's more but for now here you go.
Dinosaurs, Bears, and Kids with illegal fireworks, Oh My!
Serious, aren't we? ;D How about something along the line of the Four Year Strong Rise or Die Trying album cover?

What if we did like a collaborative song together somehow, I'd think that'd be pretty rad. ;D ;D ;D
Hello everybody, this is my first post here :)
I will probably make a more detailed intro in the appropriate section soonly, but I found this thread just now while searching for "transgender luthier" since I was feeling a bit lonely in that regard; so I wanted to say a quick hello, and express my happiness at not feeling so lonely anymore. :)
I have been building electric guitars for many years, and have recently started coming out and being more open about who I really am.
A bit scary, as I already have a bit of an established reputation under my previous persona, but am tired of hiding.
I used to play music a bunch, as well, mostly bass, but haven't for quite a while.
Also starting to play around with making clothing for myself, too. :)

Greetings and welcome, fangwen! I, too, have built musical instruments from time to time... unfortunately I tended to lean on my own intuition rather than accepted practice, so they were um... shall we say, unique. Nothing anyone would ever want to play professionally. Or even be seen playing. :)
*hug* So many of us are used to hiding; one of the biggest struggles for me in coming out is realizing that, at least when I'm presenting female, I have *nothing to hide* anymore. It does get easier over time.
I'm glad you found us. :)
Everyone loves tunes. I go from megadeth to ellie goulding to Gretchen Parlato to Knife party in a single go in the car.
I wana play!
I wasn't aware how much everyone had in common lol.
Love music, but I prefer to do vocals. Constantly reminded I'm Intelligent although I'm a major slacker soo..love mythology and history pertaining to it. Used to be involved with computers but I didn't really take the time to do much, still had lots of fun editing a private server for a while. Right handed though, meh.

So much more fun than routine fret jobs!
I recently made a fretless bass for myself using the body of a Japanese Fernandes where the original neck had been destroyed on stage by Peter Steele of Type O Negative (RIP). I MacGyvered an old Warwick neck to fit it while replacing the original damaged fingerboard with an ebony fingerboard with maple fret lines. How's that for using up the junk in your closet?

Very cool! All of mine are completely from scratch, but I do enjoy a good "Frankenstein" project now and then to use up extra parts.
Now if I could only figure out what to do with my own junk ::)

Dammit Jim, I'm a luthier, not a surgeon.
I miss having a proper guitar shop. *snif* Last instrument from scratch I had a part in is a very famous bass from a monster of a player though.
Wow, there are a lot of musicians and engineers here! I play Guitar, bass, flute, hand percussion(congas, ect) and a little piano and I'm an engineer as well. I love to jam and I love to write. My musical tastes are pretty diverse, anything from Bach to rock, I can appreciate just about anything done well. If the music moves you, then it's good.
Hugs to all,

Nice! I got my first guitar in '77 and had an Apple II+ in 1981. Learned BASIC then. Last program I wrote was in 2000 though- a fret scale calculator in C++. I built a tube amp in 1983, but had to dissasemble it and return it to my high school after it was graded. I've been zapped plenty over the years and can tell you the approximate voltage now. I have read many books about tube amps, but now I know "the guru" and I let him work the magic on my prized ones.

Well, it wasn't from working on an amp. But... My most recent ZAP was October 5th. My band was playing on an outdoor stage for an Oktoberfest party. There had been lots of wind and rain on & off all day. We were supposed to go on at 2:30, but it ended up being like 5:30 due to the rain. All the backline gear had been covered by tarps (kinda). The sound guy said yea, it's cool, everything is grounded, it's ok. ::) Anyway, I sing while playing drums, my vocal mic was on this wobbly-azz boom stand sitting on the wet stage next to me. I said "test..." and Holy Jamoley...I think I saw Jesus...I don't know how many volts passed thru my lips but it wasn't pretty. :o
Something like that will get your attention real fast!

Julia
Wow, Thank you for that video! :)
That was very interesting, I mean you see that kinda thing at your job and with family. And it's the reason why you have friends in some respects.
It's a really important aspect of life as well and always will be.
Oh gosh, why didn't I see this thread earlier??
Really surprised at how many programmers there are here, and you can add me to the list too! Mostly C/C++ for embedded systems, but I'm pretty handy with my C# / .NET stuff too. Over christmas I intend to *FINALLY* spend some quality time with the Unity game engine to help round my programming skills a little and also to get this game I've got rattling around in my head down on digital paper ;D
Avionics? Was surprised to read that too lol. I work for an Avionics company who make aircraft navigation beacons (obviously I'm on the software team ;) ), and I've always *LOVED* aircraft and flying! Hoping at some point to learn to fly a plane, but I figure I should probably learn to drive a car first! Oh and if anyone's wondering - Lancaster Bomber is my favourite aircraft ever made :) I've been fortunate to live in a place where one of the only two (IIRC?) left in the world that are still flying actually flies right over my house every few months for various displays and events. I always give the pilots a wave (they fly not much above rooftop level ;D ), and there's just nothing like the drone of those twin Rolls-Royce Merlin engines.
Geek culture? CHECK! Games are a *HUGE* part of my life, and have been ever since I was a kid. I grew up on Sonic, and often whenever me and my friends played a new game, we'd sit down afterwards and design "<WHATEVER GAME WE WERE PLAYING> 2" with all our ideas of how we'd do it differently. My friends found it fun, but preferred playing the games more, while I absolutely *LOVED* trying to design something bigger and better ;D I watch vids on The Escapist (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/) regularly (which reminds me - I need to watch this weeks lot! ) to keep up with what's going on, and I also keep up with Extra Credits (http://extra-credits.net/). As I mentioned above, I've got some games in my head that I really need to start laying down lol.
I tend to gravitate towards the Sci-fi end of the Geek spectrum - I love Star Trek (especially Enterprise - I don't get why people hate that series so much.. :( ), Stargate, Farscape, Firefly and films like Enders Game (seriously awesome film). I do like a bit of fantasy in small doses though: LoTR / The Hobbit is really awesome there's no denying that (will probably go see Desolation of Smaug over the Christmas break :) ) and I'm going spare waiting for Game of Thrones Season 3 to come out on DVD (I don't have Sky.. FML :( #firstworldproblems  ). It's a similar story with my games of course - I loved Halo back in its hay-day, Fallout 3 is one of my all-time favourite games, the Crysis series is pretty well up there on my list, All Points Bulletin: Reloaded has been my main multiplayer game for the past few years, and I keep meaning to getting around to playing Bioshock: Infinite because it just looks so damn perdy! ;D Also loved Skyrim (not so much the other Elder Scrolls games though... dunno why I just couldn't get into them), I had a 2 year love-hate relationship with WoW back when it first came out (christ.. that was nearly 10 years ago now! ) and I absolutely *ADORE* Minecraft (which I see as being basically in the Fantasy ballpark).
The thing about gaming is - it's let me be the female me without any strings attached. Every game I've played ever since I can remember (and *CERTAINLY* since WoW) where gender has been an option, I've freely and pretty much instinctively chosen female. I've never felt comfortable playing male characters ever. Heck even in Left 4 Dead I always picked Zoe when I could! Looking back in hindsight, I really do think that games have been a significant outlet for me to be the girl I really am (even if I denied it even to myself and wrote it off as "oh girls are just nicer to look at" to my friends  ) and have prevented my dysphoria turning into depression. People are always quick to blame games these days for the latest serial killings (because people are stupid apparently.. ::) ), but they never seem to acknowledge all the stories of how games help people in really positive ways..
As for IQ: Well I've got a degree in Astrophysics (well, "Physics with Astrophysics" if you want to be pedantic lol). I only just scraped through mind you, but I'm told you need an IQ of at least 120 to even be able to attempt it, so there's that :P
..wow this post got big quickly lol :P <333
