Title: Matt Kailey died yesterday
Post by: aleon515 on May 20, 2014, 03:12:18 AM
Don't know if people have heard this. It was not in the general news, and I think more trans guys have heard of him. He was an author and activist. He wrote the book "Just Add Hormones" and some other stuff. He has been writing a blog "Tranifesto". He died in his sleep from heart failure.

It was in the community alerts, but it's still sad regardless.  I used to read some of his posts.  :(  It's a tragedy to lose such a great person in our community.  Though he can never be replaced, I hope another guy can "carry the torch" more or less.

Jeez, WTF? He wasn't very old. Did he have a history of heart issues? I don't remember anything like that from his book Just Add Hormones.

This is so, so sad. He was a huge asset to our community, and an inspiration for me, as an older trans guy.

RIP, Matt. You will be missed.

Really enjoyed his work, his blog was very informative. He seemed like a cool guy.
It's bad news that he died but at least it was relatively peaceful.

My therapist recommended his book to me and I still plan on getting it once finances allow. But this saddens me to hear this. She talked highly of him.

I wasn't a particular fan of his, but he did a lot of good work for the community.

I have read only a handful of his blog entries. The only one that sticks out in my mind is a response to a query he received about whether a lot of trans men die young. The only reason I remember it, actually, is that part of his response is almost identical to what I have said in the past: that it's better to live an authentic life and take what comes along with it than to live the way I lived before. I often add that without transitioning, I probably wouldn't have survived anyway, so every day that I live now puts me ahead of the game.

As I recall, he said something about smoking in that blog entry. Was he a smoker? That's supposed to be a bad combination with T. But if he did smoke, I'm sure he knew the risks. It's all such a crap shoot anyway. Some men smoke heavily and live to be ninety.

My husband and I were lucky to meet him at the last Colorado Gold Rush conference here in Denver. He signed my copy of "Just Add Hormones" and we had a brief discussion about telling my niece and nephews about how Auntie 'Chelle is becoming Uncle Gene. I wanted to discuss more with him, and it was during the workshops so there was no one to keep from Matt. I was nervous however, and thought I could just try speaking to him again at another Denver transgender event...kinda wish I'd just sucked it up and said what I needed to say...

It sucks to want to say something to someone and realize there won't be any more chances. Sorry.
I meant to contact him sometime to say thanks for running his blog, and never did. It's still up right now, unchanged at the moment, I wonder if his family plans to keep Tranifesto online. He answered so many questions and helped a lot of people.

Yes, I wondered about this. His FB page is also still up, so I am assuming his family still reads this. Usually they take a little money to continue running, but I would donate to do so. There's a LOT of info there which was very helpful to me. I also found his book "Just Add Hormones" to be very helpful. It doesn't quite match my experiences (I think at one time he presented in quite a feminine way, which I did not). But I felt that it did speak to me anyway.

So sad :( I learned a lot from his site, and bought several of his books. I would donate as well, though there are links on his website to sell his books so that should count as revenue generating. I hope they keep his site up for a while.
