Title: The 'How Old Do I Sound?' Thread
Post by: AndrewB on July 11, 2015, 09:30:12 AM
So I came up with this idea when I saw the "Does My Voice Pass?" thread and thought it might be cool if us transmasculine guys had a place where we could see how old we'd sound on the phone, or if our voice matches about how old we've been told we look on the "Do I Pass?" topic. So how about we post short voice recordings and let people see what they think? Pre-T and peri-T both welcome!

I'll post one in a bit, when I'm on my computer and not my phone.  :D Also if anyone has any good suggestions for sites to use for uploading and linking their audio clips, that'd be most welcome!

Well, I just googled "uplaoding sounds" and besides "soundcloud" (with registration-stuff) I found that webservice called "Vocaroo" which seems to work really fast.
Anyway that's the result :D http://vocaroo.com/i/s0VFk0Tkw4H0

Honestly, my voice doesn't sound like that 99% of the time... don't know what's going on today, but as I said in the record, I'm going to upload a second "more realistic" one some other day. At least that today's "accident" makes the age-sounding-question quite interesting :P

I'd guess Shinigami is somewhere around late teens / early 20's?

Haha I'm terrible at guessing ages.

Great results, Shinigami! I'd say late-teens or early adult, somewhere around 17-20, if I had to put my money on it.

I agree I'd say early 20's, definitely a passing voice.

I honestly only heard my voice once since I started T (almost two years) I hated the sound of my voice before my transition and I figured I'd hate it after haha. I'll have to check that out.

I would also say you sound like you're in your early to mid 20s. Maybe it's just your accent but I think you sound a little like Daniel Radcliffe.

I thought the same thing, but I was afraid to say so 'cause I didn't want to create this "Pfft all Americans think we sound like Harry Potter" thing.

I was worried about that too :D but I think it's also the intonation of his voice that made me think that, not just the accent so I decided to just go ahead and say it lol.

Too bad they misgendered you before going up on stage, that would have taken the wind out of my sails. Blindfolded I'd say you were around 14-16. Are you pre-T? Because if so, you're going to do great on it, both appearance-wise and vocally.

Great idea!

Here is my voice recording: http://vocaroo.com/i/s00ZUnZgfOyG

Like 4736251, my voice is a somewhat irritating barrier when it comes to passing or being gendered correctly. If I'm nervous (more nervous than in the recording), I generally talk in a higher pitch which is counter productive to my desire to be spoken to/about using masculine pronouns.

Hmm I'd say around the same range as 4736251, 14-16. It's pretty hard, pre-T and in the early stages of T, to pass as much older than that, since that's about when the voice drops start coming in, if not a little sooner in some guys (if I remember, anyways). I'd like to get other people's input on your voices, though, so I'm not the only one making a guess.  :D

Venom, I think your voice passes for a 12 year old boy. I don't think your voice is feminine, I just think it sounds like it could go either way at the moment :P

Dark wolf, it sounded like you were in a nice rainforest haha its a little hard to hear your voice properly but i'd probably say you sound around 12 aswell

Yeah Dark Wolf your voice was a bit tough to hear but I pretty much agree with Harlee, 12-13, 14 at the most.

Here's the voice recording I've been putting off (things just kept getting in the way!), let me know what you think:

Dude your voice is plenty deep, I wouldn't doubt ya for a second. You sound like a certain actor, but I can't place a name to the voice... I'll let you know if it comes to me! I'd say you could pass for early-ish adult (20-30s). It's hard once you get into the adult-sounding range, since everyone's voice ages over time, and it's hard to say how much it's aged (unless you're clearly an older fellow).

Awesome! I'm 24 and sometimes feel like guys my age have way deeper voices than me, Idk if it's just hearing it in my head that makes it sound different

Thank you AndrewB and harlee!

At 22 I would hope I look older than 12-16, which may explain why I get misgendered if I do the speaking first. Though today I did get called mate by the same lady who referred to me with feminine pronouns, so I dunno, it could just be an Aussie thing.  I think T would certainly help me out, and I'm hoping to be on it by the end of the year. Fingers crossed. My voice is considerably deeper than what is was when I was 18... I sounded like I was 8 then.

BMTH: I would place you in the 25-30 range without knowing your age or what you look like.

AndrewB: I'd say early 20s, and your voice sounds pretty much inline with your appearance. What I mean by that is you look to be in your early twenties as well.

Thanks AndrewB, but my wife thinks I still sound like a teenage boy. ??? I'm in my late 30's, it was embarrassing when my voice first started to drop.  For the past couple of weeks, it seems settling down, less cracking.  I had a pretty severe voice dysphoria pre-T.   I used to think my voice sounded like Mickey Mouse, so when my voice started to drop, I was like a fat kid in a candy store!

@RaptorChops, I'd say late teens, early to mid-twenties, perhaps. Definitely not 15, you're too hard on yourself  :D

@Rengar, I'd say anywhere in your 20s, leaning toward the earlier ones (21-23), you sound great!

@Shin it's not too much different, if I didn't know any better I'd say it was just different tone fluctuations (e.g. mood, affect, etc. changing your voice).

@Sentinel, I'd guess around 14-15. And yeah it's natural for us to hear it deeper in our heads because we also pick up on the vibrations via our jaws, so it sounds deeper usually than it does to others. Also, some mics don't pick up bass tones as well as treble ones, so that might have something to do with it, depending on mic quality. You sound good though, way deeper than my voice was pre-T!

Thanks, man. It does sound deeper in my head, but other people have told me it sounds deeper or "more rich" when it's not being played back on a recording (for the record, I'm 16, but my voice has been around this pitch since 5th grade).

Hmm 16-20, which seems like a large range, but it has to do with the fact that you seem to have deeper tones that you can hit, yet your voice is a little on the higher range; just a high-pitched male voice. I would definitely gender you male over the phone, though. And wow, you've been on T for a long while!

Huge change! I should mix together two of my voice recordings, one pre- and peri-T. It's a pretty huge change; my best friend is long distance, and around 3 months my voice did a bombshell of a drop that surprised the heck out of her when we got in a Skype call. I warned her I thought it'd dropped, but she still insisted, "You said it dropped, you didn't say it divebombed!"  :D I wish I could get another one of those big drops.

@Harlee, that voice + Aussie accent = totally winning the vocal lottery, IMO, haha. 20-30, I'd say.

@DonScarletto you sound young, 11-13, but that's to be expected for pre-T. Not a bad start at all, I'd say it's in the mid-range of pre-T voices; not super squeaky, though not baritone, by any means ;)

I would but I'm horrible naming ones that aren't Swedish, Spanish (from Spain), or from AU or the UK. It'd just depend on where you're from.

Yeah Dark Wolf your voice was a bit tough to hear but I pretty much agree with Harlee, 12-13, 14 at the most.

Here's the voice recording I've been putting off (things just kept getting in the way!), let me know what you think:

Nice, Andrew. You sound mid 20s to mid 30s, and beyond passing you have a great sounding voice too.

I am aware that I wasn't gifted with the luxioursly deep voice I had hoped for.. at almost a year on T I think I'm just gonna have to learn to be happy with what I got haha. I just wish I didn't sound as old as I look, its not helping me any.

How old are you? You sound like you *could* be in your early 30s, but more likely 20s. You sound good to me. Resonant, if not the lowest pitch.

I'm 23, most people day to day think I'm 16-17 based off my looks. If I really sound like I'm in my 20's tho that's very good news to me   :D

Well, here's my contribution!

I've been super self-conscious about doing something like this ever since I started T, and this is the first one I've done in over a year now. Just giving a heads up now that I'm sorry if the sound sucks or is loud, since the mic that's built into my laptop is fussy.

You sound good to me William like a teenage boy. I was also self conscious about my voice too the first few months but it will get deeper and start cracking. I was also still getting called ma'am too back then. Don't worry buddy it will get better ;)

I agree with RaptorChops, you sounds like a teenage boy.  I felt like that @ 3months on T too, sound deeper in my head than actually is, but when 4 months came and gone, my voice took a big drop.  So, don't let it bother you too much, because the voice will come.   ;)

Thanks for the input guys.  I'm actually 42 yrs old!  LOL   :D  I am so ready for it to be deeper!  My Dr. told me that people my age may not get a deeper voice because we've already developed and that has me afraid that I'll be stuck with a higher voice for the rest of my life no matter how long I'm on testosterone.  However, when you listen to my old voice mail message there is a big difference in my voice.  I also heard that the big drop in voice happens at 3 months and I'm at the 3 month mark so I'm afraid it won't happen.

i thought that it would happen at 3 months, but it's more so at 4-5 months. you have the initial dip at three, but 5 months onward is where it really deepens. :)

There's no set mark when your voice will drop or stay unchanged.
Like palexander said, after 5 months or so is usually when it starts becoming noticeable. My voice barely started cracking at about 3 months. I'm almost a year now and it's still (very subtly) getting a little deeper

i thought my voice would be done changing at 5 or 6 months, but i'm 9 months on t now and it's still dropping.
ultimately it's how your body reacts to t, can't really say for certain because no one is the same.

Thanks everyone for their input!  I kind of thought my Dr. didn't know what he was talking about.  I know testosterone thickens the vocal cords so it shouldn't matter how old you are if you were born female.  The vocal cords would be thin, so thickening would happen.  Maybe he's confused and was thinking about MTF.  Anyway, I had a personal message on here but it won't allow me to reply so I'm not ignoring you, tjack77, I  just can't send a personal message but I'm super excited to hear from someone close to my age and know that it is possible to have a deep voice at my age!

I think it could be interpreted a number of ways. On its own, maybe mid-late teen? But I mean, if you look much older in person, that voice wouldn't sound too out of place with an early-twenties face, I reckon.

Really great voice for pre-T, whoa! On voice alone I'd say like 15... but with an older face it the sounding young would be balanced out, and wouldn't seem out of place.

you sound 15 or 16 to me, just not exactly masculine yet. with the depth you have right now, i think that your voice will most likely drop really nicely.

It's been a while since I shared one of these, and here's what I got. I'm sorry if there's any weird background noise. I'm pretty sure now that it might be my mic unless my laptop is overheating a little bit.

Hey James. I would say that your voice definetly sounds male to me. Maybe around 14-16?

It sounds like you are vacuuming in the background :) But yeah you're voice is very male. I'd guess early 20's?

Damn, sorry about that. The only thing on in the background was the TV, so I don't know if my computer was getting hot or my mic just sucks with picking up weird white noise. Age wise, I'm turning 22 next month. So got it :)

Here is my voice recording: http://vocaroo.com/i/s00ZUnZgfOyG
Above is Pre-T.

I forgot to post this one, but this is one month on T: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1TFymw727js
Sorry if this recording is quiet, not sure what happened there but the original is quiet too.

And now three months on T: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1t5Iuj7z7m5

My one month and pre-T voices sound horrible. XD

I also sound like a completely different person. The clicking sound in the three months one is my mouse, new mic is sensitive (can also hear me breathing, sorry).

Unfortunately, it looks like your pre-T recording isn't available anymore. The one month was reeeally difficult for me to hear, but you sound awesome in the newest one! Not to mention the clarity was great, haha. Hurray microphone! I would guess 21-22 by the voice.
Title: Re: The 'How Old Do I Sound?' Thread
Post by: Venom on January 12, 2016, 03:54:45 AM
Ah drat, they do delete them after some time (looks like six months, or thereabouts). I'm really glad I downloaded it the other day when it was still there as I lost the original in a reformat.

Here's the updated Pre-T link: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0VG2VzFWa3K

And here's a louder One month on T link: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0NwY0UsBSB5
There's some background noise that isn't as noticeable on the quieter version, though I did have to boost volume by 10db.

I'm 23, so a guess in the range of 21-22 based on my voice is pretty spot on to what I'd like to be seen as. I mentioned it in my pre-T recording; my voice used be the one thing that made people use she/her when I presented as masculine as I could. I only hear she/her from family and a couple of store clerks where I shopped prior to T, which is pretty super. It's still not quite as deep as I'd like, but there's time for improvement.

Also hearing what my voice sounded like back then makes me cringe. No wonder why I hated talking on the mic in games.

Thank you very much FrankNstein, I appreciate the time you took to respond to my post.

Ok this has peaked my interest but I'm nervous to try anything because family says my voice is much deeper, than before (1 day shy of 6 months), but my hair stylist who has only known me either just after or before I start T says my voice is really high. Granted I only told her I was trans in December. So now I'm always self-conscious of my voice again. I want a deep Tom Waits voice without smoking a pack a day [emoji28]. But I know I must be patient, and not cheat.

Honestly you do sound kind of young but only if I think "hm... How old does this person sound?"  It's not like "oh this person sounds like 18" jumps out at me.  I am pretty sure that it's deep enough that while people might think you have a young voice if you ask them about it, that's not going to be their first thought.

Coming up on 2 years on T soon, would be interested to know if my voice matches my age.

Any other guys here use Praat to analyze their voice? I've tested multiple voice clips, there's a variation of anywhere from mid 70s to upwards of 110 hz just reading stuff.

Can you do a longer clip?  At least a full sentence like "my name is (whatever) and I am three months and twenty odd days on testosterone"?  Or any other sentence that has more than just four words without intonation?  It is really hard to tell if someone's voice is passable with such a short clip.

As for above me I would say 14-15 year old boy but most people do when at the beginning of T. After all you are little less than half year into puberty. I am not expecting to sound much older than at until few years on T.

I used to hang out on this forum a few years ago (2012, I guess?) when I was really struggling to try and discern whether or not medically transitioning was appropriate for me. I left for a long period of time and completely forgot every bit of my login information.

Anyway, I finally began the process towards the latter end of 2015, opting to undergo top surgery before beginning HRT. I feel that the choice was correct for me (I was... 'gifted' with impossible-to-bind, very 'lifted' sweater calves) and I'm also very happy with the results I received from my top surgeon in MN.
Though I've been pleased with how my transition has been going, I've lately hit sort of an unexpected roadblock. I'm still very early into the process (6 months on T, 7 months post-op) and even though some things feel like they moved INCREDIBLY fast, others feel like waiting around for tar pitch to drop.
I haven't been misgendered since I was about one month into the HRT. It was... strange, exhilarating and unlike anything I'd ever felt. Pre everything, I was called by male pronouns probably 60% of the time in the general public. Now, I'm positive that I'd get called out if I were to even attempt to enter the women's restroom.
My hips have shrunk, my upper body has bulked up considerably and I have a lot of new body hair. My facial hair is... eh. It's slow. I get a little bummed when I see dudes that have pretty decent looking amounts six months in.
But, more than that... I feel like I've entered the 'fat face' stage. I heavily work out 4 times a week and I'm in the best shape I've ever been, but my face is wide as hell (at least, to me). I've put on 25 pounds since starting T but all my pants fit way looser and I had to go up a size in shirts, so I know I haven't just packed on a ton of fat.
I just definitely feel like I'm in a very awkward stage. Even though I'm very confident in myself these days, more so than I've ever been, I can't help but feel like I'm not 'there' yet. I'm not sure when or if that day will ever come.

But I digress. My voice used to be a large source of stress and general discomfort for me. It was never high-pitched, but it was never pegged as male. Not once.

Well man, consider yourself lucky because you sound like a grown man in your mid twenties or early thirties to me.  I'm six months in and am lucky to be gendered male by my voice at all, much less tagged an a grown up!  :)

Edit: is it bad that seeing people so much farther along than me on the same timeline is so depressing?  Seriously, I would give anything to pass more than half the time, which I am lucky to do.  :(  Ugh why isn't patience MY virtue?

That's because you are in the gender ambiguous range for pitch at the moment. Both women and men can fall into this area and how they are gendered is determined by their speech pattern. If you maintain a relatively flat voice it is likely to be gendered male. If there is a good deal of inflection, it would be gendered female. In your case, you are maintaining the relatively flat voice but you have some lower base notes that are starting to creep in as well. I suspend a couple of more months and you won't be questioning which gender it is. By the way, even though the gender might be on the ambiguous side, it is a mature voice and not that of a young boy.

Thanks, Dena! I think you're right about my voice being in an ambiguous range. Weirdly, I think I sound more male when I sing than when I speak. Anyway, I'm curious to see where my voice will end up at the end of this journey.

When you sing, you are eliminating the inflection of a natural voice which forces you more into the masculine domain. When you talk, some of the inflections is present. I would not suggest you attempt to eliminate the inflection at this point because if your voice goes as low as I think it will, the inflection will make your voice a more interesting male voice. Much like a regional accent adds interest to a voice, what you have will do the same.

Your voice is in the upper end of the male range but clearly male. You have enough inflection in the voice to make it interesting and pleasant to listen to but there is nothing to hint of femininity. As for age, I would say late teens or somewhere in the young adult. It will be interesting to hear a side by side in another 4 months if you have had that much change in only 4 months.
