hi my name is Vanessa and i am 31, i just started hrt on 9-8-15 and I am so excited and happy. but I am worried about my age and how hrt will effect me. if i will see noticeable changes, i know i wont see changes over night and know it takes time. i just hope i do see changes.
i was wondering what changes i could expect?
i kinda of noticed so far my emotions are all over the place. is this normal?
thank you ☺
Congratulations!
One of the first things I noticed was a shift in my scent. And a slight shift in taste and smell. But different people noticed different things at the beginning. Your emotions being all over the place is very typical.
As to being 31, it just depends. I started just before I turned 40 and I am now 41, and I was super happy with the results so far. There are many people on here that started in there 30s or 40s and have awesome results. But it varies a lot, and part of that is your genetics as well.
Congratulations :)
well all changes are individual
1–3 months after starting estrogen
• softening of skin
• decrease in muscle mass and increase in body fat
• possible redistribution of body fat to a more "feminine" pattern
• fewer instances of waking up with an erection or spontaneously
having an erection;
Gradual changes
• nipple and breast growth
• slower growth of facial and body hair
• slowed or stopped "male"-pattern balding
• decrease in testicular size
If you take estrogen via oral/sublingual you could try to spread the daily dose in a few small doses, instead of two big ones... this way levels might be more steady, which could help with emotions...
I find that I don't get mood swings even though I take my dose all at once in the morning. Perhaps it's a short term buildup.

my does is split for once in the morning and once in the afternoon. how would i spread this out more? and will effect the way the estrogen works?

Well talk with your doc about it...
Many people use bioidentical micronized estrogen sublingually... this way its supposed to be less straining on the liver and less causing clotting factors...
If swallowed instead of used sublingual the release is slower but the dose is less effective because part of it is built down by the liver...
anyways there is a spike with intake and there might be a low hours later, causing menopausal like mood swings...
if the daily dose is say spread in four parts levels might be more steady...
it might be worth a try...
the daily dose is the same...
oh ok yes right now i have the pill form estradiol , my doc said i didnt have to swallow it that i can hold it under my tongue. is there a difference to swallowing or just letting it dissolve? thank you so much ☺
I smell so much better now, especially some scents.

Letting it dissolve is supposed to be better for the liver and less causing clotting factors.
If dissolved in the mouth estrogen enters the blood stream directly, through the mouth. This way it bypasses the liver with intake.
If swallowed it passes through the liver with intake.

On potassium. I just had my 9 month HRT blood test. My sodium was at the bottom end of normal and potassium just barely over the top end. During the 9 months I did not make any efforts to reduce potassium and I did take vitamins. I also drank a V8 nearly every day which contains a lot of potassium, 640 mg. I would expect a multivitamin by itself wouldn't be a problem.

ok thank you, before i started hrt my potassium was on the low side and months before in ER for low potassium. but all my other blood work looked really good i guess ☺
At 33 and three months on HRT, I'm still partly colorblind but my vision has improved. I've had to get new glasses with a weaker prescription. My hips are getting bigger and my waist and shoulders are slimming, and I'm seeing development of breast tissue! I use a sticky bra and made some nice cleavage today, lol. And no, it's not just fat, because I haven't gained any weight!
You should do fine with starting at your age, but it all depends on what you've got to start with really. Just don't forget that body size and shape isn't everything. "Average Women" look nothing like our societally programmed concept of beauty, and being a woman is about more than aesthetic changes. Don't get me wrong, do whatever it takes to be happy with yourself, but if you're easily discouraged, it's going to be a very long and bumpy road, and it's already long and bumpy enough!

thank you, iam not easily discouraged, was just wondering with my age because of everything i read some say the older you are the less that changes then if you where to start at a younger age in you teens. just seeing what other girls my age are experiencing to see what i might be able to expect or look forward to as iam extremly happy
I was 39 when I started. HRT didn't do much for me physically. I hadn't seen any noticeable changes after 6 months.

Its possible your body odor is getting sweeter, and also your sense of smell increases.

Well just ask if you have questions.
In general a bit of reconfiguration is taking place.
Some muscles might be built down, its one side effect of estrogen. Fat tissue in certain places like breasts and hips is more likel to be built up and muscle mass is more likely to be built down.
So its well possible the remaining muscles have to work more, which might make for a sore muscle.

A bit of sports could help... just a bit, maybe a few minutes of walking... or biking or swimming... they could also help with a toned body...

Existing fat doesn't move. New fat is placed according to the new plan. Fat cells don't die off very quickly either, they just release fat.

Quite a few people say it complements estrogen.
In cis females it occurs for about 10 days in larger doses every month.

You can talk to your doctor or endo about it.
Yes its ok to take it together with estradiol.
Its just another female hormone.
Its not exactly proven but many say it can help with breast growth, and many report help with mood.
Its available as capsules, topical gel or implants.

74 ng/dl testosterone

Well if its pg/ml it is high...
if its pmol/l its ok...
here is a graph showing how intake influences levels:
https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,186946.msg1665088.html#msg1665088
if used sublingual there are spikes for a few hours...
if simply swallowed not... but sublingual is supposed to be less straining on the liver... and lesss causing clotting factors...
one way to avoid spikes a bit can be spreading the daily dose in a few small doses instead of two big ones...

Welcome to the world of female, Vanessa.
Yep, ERT can work a number on your emotions. That's okay. Enjoy them as a new experience. This is living.
How's your body temperature doing?
I have been hot-flashing since this past Saturday - no matter that I am inside the air conditioned Library, or grocery store, or elsewhere. Then when that passes, I go into the dry cold feelings - skin so cold, even at 100 degrees here at my home town. You go to your office where the men set the AC to freezing while we women must wear sweaters to keep warm. I commiserated that cold skin with other female co-workers at my former job. It's that female thing - no guys complain about hot flashes or being cold. You feel the skin of a woman and it is cold. Are you there yet? You will be.
And then there is the connected hyper sense of smell.
I was at jail visitation Saturday. There is a grim reality to this environment; yet I, ever the one looking to lighten the mood, had to make my remark as I exited that video visiting room. I good-naturedly commented to the guards something as, 'I smell a submarine sandwich - turkey, chicken, ham, roast beef. What is it?' I smelled the aroma of that sandwich. The guards in the lobby said they smelled nothing. I went to the guards behind the armour glass and asked about the sandwich as I enrolled for next week's visit. A guard behind the heavy glass in their sealed room confessed - he was eating a turkey sandwich. Ha! Those male guards were oblivious to what was obvious to me.
Your body scent will definitely change. You will surely notice your own self changing. Others around you - whether they know or not - will notice your new scent - especially other females. Some might compliment you. Your clothes will hold your new female scent and that is not necessarily a bad thing.
What you eat will taste differently - depending upon your established likes / dislikes that could be good or bad. Explore those new tastes and smells at the grocery store and spice department.
If you are romantically involved, well, um, your partner will notice all these changes about you - your smell, your taste, um...
Your new, sensitive anatomy can become sore if not protected from abrasive rubbing from your shirt. If you are presenting as male, you will do well to wear a soft cotton T-shirt or under-shirt to protect your sensitive areas. Once you present as female, wearing a bra will provide that protection. Enjoy the tingles and jolts.
My endo's initial prescription to me was all at once in the morning with breakfast. I did that at my start and was ill much of the time; he allowed me to scatter them equally throughout the day and I felt better. A few years into ERT I had a different endo and a different prescription - one lump-sum dosage in one pill - and it was back to being ill many mornings. The difference that second time was that I was now female full-time forever. My female co-workers recognised what I was experiencing, approached me on their own, and asked about my pregnancy, due date, and whether I was hoping for a boy or a girl. Hmm? They did not know my change but I suddenly realised why I was ill - it was 'morning sickness'. No wonder I had night-time dreams about being pregnant when I was ill; my body told my brain it had 'morning sickness' so my brain thought I was pregnant. Wow!
If you are on one large-dose pill, request your endo change it to smaller-dose pills and scatter them equally throughout your day to maintain your level. My generic low-cost prescription dissolves fine under my tongue.
You are at age 31, still young to have many years of enjoyment. My opinion holds that no one is too old to attain their identity goals. Certainly, your body has had half its lifetime making bad with the T and now you are trying to make nice with the E to overcome those years. Yep, those of us who began young have less accumulated T to attain our results. Changes will take time. Learn your options; discuss all options with your medical team - different ERT blends, pre-op options, pre-GCS surgery, etc. Take an active role in your course of treatment.
If all these things are not happening to you yet, well let this be a lesson of what lies ahead. You will come across them daily such that they will eventually become part of your new you. Nevertheless, enjoy them as you continue your life as female. It's a wonderfull experience!

Enjoy them as a new experience. This is living.
I have been trying to embrace my new found emotional responses. It seems like I am not having new emotions, so much as having them be much more powerful and vivid. If that makes any sense. :)

You don't know how happy I was to read this. I thought I was loosing my marbles. The hot flashes are killing me, even with the onset of Wyoming winter. My wife was sure I was trying to freeze her this weekend, only for me to turn around and be under an afghan wearing a fleece.

And then there is the connected hyper sense of smell.
I also thought this was my imagination. But just like with my emotions, it feels like my senses are just on overdrive! Everything is more vibrant.

What you eat will taste differently - depending upon your established likes / dislikes that could be good or bad. Explore those new tastes and smells at the grocery store and spice department.
I am loving trying all sorts of foods. I have found many new things that I never used to like are great now. I haven't found anything that I used to like that I hate now, but there are things that I no longer find myself drawn to.

I am noticing some, um, discomfort shall we say? My nipples are very sensitive and almost always hard. I have been wearing a bra under my male clothes for awhile now, and boy am I glad to have them now. I would never get anything done. :)

I got this small area where my hips should be forming a fatty lump (2 inches wide, maybe 1/4 inch thick). Looks like Cellulite(sp?)
Is that my Hips forming maybe?
